Curious what other languages were evaluated.
I'm........skeptical about all of this. Kid-sized sub built from rocket parts in a matter of hours?
> You can take an incremental approach and add type annotations as you need them

Most definitely. We've added type safety to new features in our legacy codebase. It's very seamless.

sounds like someone failed a lyft interview

Re:ADP intentionally broke its Zenefits integration on Monday June 08, 2015 @09:01PM (#9683486)
ADP is in my axis of evil. Their employee and employer-systems are horrendously out of date and their support is non-existent. Let them fail.
Re:MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues on Friday February 20, 2015 @12:39PM (#9081559)
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS.

I was affected and had a repair done. Looks like they're reimbursing customers for past repairs for this issue. Woop!

Re:Two Airplanes Successfully Ditch in Pacific on Tuesday January 27, 2015 @07:53PM (#8957331)
Outside of most Cirrus aircraft, they're not standard. They work pretty well on light and ultralight (single engine) aircraft.

Think of the extraordinary size and weight a chute or series of chutes would be for a short haul 737-sized aircraft. The cost of lugging those around across a fleet would be absolutely prohibitive. There's also little reason for this type of safety mechanism for such passenger jets. Commercial twin or quad engine planes are extraordinarily safe, and offer many more redundancies than a tiny single engine plane.

I'm fully aware of the extreme cost of rolling out a fiber infrastructure in new locations, but I still wonder why Google isn't more aggressive with their expansion. While the upfront costs are great, they more or less have guaranteed success in most major cities. Nobody likes the incumbent telcos--they're hated all over the US. I just dream of a world in which we aren't getting raped by Comcast, TWC, and Cox. They are absolutely abysmal and have no incentive to make their customers happy given their market monopoly/oligopoly.

Couldn't this be reduced by, like, a lot by simply using this CSS3 gem?

Accurately shows the N-Judah ridiculousness I experienced this morning.

Re:Supreme court: Aereo is violating copyright law [pdf] on Wednesday June 25, 2014 @01:27PM (#7945445)
I think my example was valid.

Tivo, for example, is also a middle-man that is doing essentially the same thing. Tivo grabs your paid (in this case) cable TV signal, and for a separate fee, records that content onto their hardware and allows you to stream it on devices and televisions without using the cable provider's own hardware.

Re:Supreme court: Aereo is violating copyright law [pdf] on Wednesday June 25, 2014 @01:03PM (#7945259)
"I think, the Court got it right in the end"

I don't see how this really differs from a person setting up recording equipment in his/her own home to capture that OTA broadcast for later viewing—which itself is legal.

Re:HBO programming available on Amazon Prime on Wednesday May 21, 2014 @05:11PM (#7780809)
My iPad was a one-time purchase and Comcast doesn't have a problem with me streaming HBO Go content on that. So why the Roku?

Re:Tesla vs. the auto dealers on Monday April 14, 2014 @03:21PM (#7588204)
Not sure what the backlash is about with the auto dealers. Even if they are weary of automakers becoming more vertical, the automakers themselves will still need experienced salesmen in which case their jobs aren't threatened. They'd be working for automakers, not dealerships.

If you look at it, this industry shift wouldn't be job-cutting unlike for airline ticketing agents and toll collectors, who have seen their jobs replaced by machines.

What's with the horrid markup (tables and inline CSS) on that page??
Re:Facebook acquires Oculus VR on Tuesday March 25, 2014 @05:40PM (#7469199)
This article is so misleading, starting with the title.

"Cops find five Indian Ocean practice Runways..." seems to suggest these runways were used for practice by Shah. This article says nothing more than these were runway options (out of probably thousands) that were available for simulation. There is no useful information from this piece at all, and it is leading to completely unwarranted speculation, especially by folks who have no knowledge of flying and simulators.

Re:Outbox Is Shutting Down on Tuesday January 21, 2014 @04:26PM (#7098528)
A truly great service. I'd even be willing to pay 3-4x. My apt building is from the early 1900s and my tiny mailbox overfills after 1-2 days -- it's been wonderful to not have to come back from vacation to a clogged box. Outbox has saved me all kinds of time and patience and am terribly sad to see them go. Best of luck to the team in their next project!
Blog should point to the full hourlong piece. Coincidentally, I just watched this a few days ago and it was excellent.

> Note the flat panel primary displays (color LCDs), that is the tip-off that this is pretty new.

Glass cockpits have been around for some time now. Also many older 737s (at least with US-based airlines) have been retrofitted with newer equipment. For example, all of SWA's 737-300 series aircraft (the oldest in their fleet) have been upgraded to glass cockpit controls.

Re:Defund the NSA - This Isn't Over on Thursday July 25, 2013 @12:08PM (#6103122)
The NSA spying program is horrible, yes. And I think it should be halted immediately. But we need the NSA—they do important things for this country despite the bad clout they've received because of this one domestic program. That program is minuscule in size compared to the sum of the important operations that are conducted in the agency.

I want to make myself clear. I think the domestic intercepts are 100% wrong and unconstitutional. That needs to stop. But that agency is home to smart people who do other necessary work to protect us.
