Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:51PM (#50265625)
Amazon Nova is their model? I worked for a company that was being pushed into trying to use AWS's "Nova Act" [0], which I guess was their python-based wrapper to do things in Playwright. I didn't think it used Nova the model under the hood though, or maybe it did. Either way, Nova Act was horrible in terms of performance - it was so...damn...slooooow. Much easier to just use Playwright.

“Essential storage keeps TypeUI running. With your permission, analytics helps us make it better.”

And when you click the “Manage preferences” option…

“Required for security, authentication, preferences, and core site functionality.”

Sorry, but are cookies really “essential” to me simply viewing the site? Note there is no option to completely opt out.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:36PM (#50136972)
Except that most of what they showed won’t be in the production consumer version, or any version that is street legal. Not to mention that, if I recall correctly, not one of the demos of the car “flying” had an actual human inside because 1) that’s probably not safe, feasible, or realistic and 2) the models shown at the demo probably were designed specifically for the demo and aren’t anything like the production version will be if it ever actually ships. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

I watched the ~16 minute presentation on YouTube and it was as if Elon and the two other guys presenting were doing a skit at a talent show. They seemed extremely unprepared. Maybe they were intentionally trying to come across as off the cuff, but it felt unnatural and cringey. Together they have the charisma of a paper clip. These guys are so full of themselves that it’s difficult to appreciate whatever accomplishment this may or may not be. And, of course, no way it will be street legal with air thrusters. What a complete joke.
Related, I saw a project named "TrellisWM" posted on Twitter the other day. The developer calls it a "Fractal Window Manager". Looks interesting!

Related, it amazes me how many seasoned developers don't know how to do basic tasks in their editor/IDE with the keyboard and instead rely on their mouse. Most people don't need to be super users, but it baffles me when I see a developer who hasn't at least learned the keyboard shortcuts for opening files and jumping to functions/methods, etc.

Just because a provider is charging less, doesn't mean their cost went down. This is probably especially true with the big players that are trying to stay competitive.

For API usage, sure. But plenty of people have subscriptions where these differences effectively don’t matter.
I thought the exact same thing. Of course, a key difference is that those of us who choose to pay for an iPhone, use iOS, and often pay for additional services are already giving Apple our money. They're trying to extract more and more from us and it's honestly insulting. I give techradar credit for providing us their user-hostile experience for free.
I agree. I noticed recently an ad directly inside of 1Password. I’ve paid for a 1Password subscription since 2013, and have had a family plan for many years. I know the company changed hands several years back after AgileBits sold to VC, but this type of disrespect caused me to cancel my membership. There are plenty of alternatives that haven’t turned their focus to the “Enterprise” and aren’t trying to extract as much money as possible from their paying customers.
Re:Xcode 27.1 Beta Release – Support for iPhone Duo on Friday September 18, 2026 @02:58PM (#49758655)
Update: I should have linked directly to: https://developer.apple.com/iphone-duo/

"Xcode 27.1 adds development support for iPhone Duo. This includes updated SDKs and a simulator that supports the all-new poses and orientations of iPhone Duo."

Very cool. I want to do something similar to ressurect old Orb disks from over 25 years ago.
Re:An Update on Leaving Gmail for Fastmail on Monday August 17, 2026 @05:09PM (#49337674)
I'm in the process of migrating away from my custom domain on Google (I'm grandfathered in from back when they offered it for free). So far getting all my old email, contacts, and calendar info FastMail has been seamless. All that's left is to repoint the DNS.

Like another comment, I too have a couple of services connected to "Sign in w/ Google". Until I actually delete my Google org, those will still remain active. Since I'm not paying, I feel OK about this.

Thank you, Mr. Tuttle!

Not a huge surprise
Great job on this. I can see this being extremely useful for my teams!
Hate on the Claude desktop app on macOS all you want (I personally think it’s fine), but I don’t understand how Gruber can think the ChatGPT app is that good. It’s also…fine, but certainly not special IMO, despite being a native app.

I owned a Model Y for several years, but, at least in my city, I always felt Tesla’s navigation had pretty poor route selection during busy times of the day - like dorecting me to streets that were notoriously stop and go during rush our when the highway alternative was known to be much quicker.
Perhaps “charlatan” in the literal sense isn’t true. I was speaking more colloquial, but that was lazy of me.

I will ask though, has he been honest when he’s testified before Congress? At best, I think we can say he hasn’t been very transparent many of those times. If that’s not for power and/or financial gain, what is it? [0]

> “we're told to not like Facebook…”

I didn’t have to be “told” to not like Facebook or Meta. The company’s actions for well over a decade and those of its executives, including the CEO, allowed to form that opinion on our own. I’d be willing to bet that experience is not unique to me.

I definitely didn't mean this as a personal attack.
Those are fair points, though I didn't say he wasn't a good business person. I could probably concede that he is, but I don't see him as the tech visionary he's often propped up to be.
I've always felt that Mark Zuckerberg got lucky with Facebook and that he has no real lasting talent as a technologist or visionary. He seems to attempt to chase the latest "it" thing and has very few original ideas that actual stick long-term. He's quite the charlatan.
