Re:The end of social networks as we know them?

I don't think Facebook can survive ten more years without deep changes. Facebook needs your data to survive but they don't bring much value to their users anymore, some people are leaving but many are just getting passive and don't post anymore. This is probably the end of an era and Facebook recent missteps are probably the nail in the coffin.

What a sad news. I was expecting more servers in EU in a near future and maybe an option to select the location of our primary DC (US or EU). I've been a happy customer since 2013 and for the first time since I joined I'll be considering other options.

AFAIK we didn't do an actual benchmark but when doing software decoding/encoding there should be small improvements here and there.

Give it another try, who knows.

We had to redesign a new kind of module called a renderer that has some weird capabilities and of course the Chromecast being kind of undocumented didn't help.

It's been years that this option is available on Android. Look for the lock icon in the overlay.

Absolutely. You can play any Twitch stream from VLC and cast it on your TV.

Auto updates are never enabled right after a release in case of critial regression. We usually wait for a week before starting the rollout.

Yes, we had a last minute issue with the 64-bit builds, they will be available in a few hours.

Chromecast support took much more time to implement than we originally expected, that was probably the major reason for the delay.

It might solve the scalability issue but definitely not the privacy issue.

Absolutely. Smartphones are the best example, the software makes the hardware unusable or insecure because of the lack of updates pretty quickly.

A media player is rarely that simple. Before writing to the GPU you have to access the content (file, network), demux, then decode and finally display.
The most dangerous areas are the demuxers and decoders so they have to be sandboxed.
So yes, you're right, but this doesn't solve the problem of moving the buffers between processes.

Moving 4K / 10-bit buffers at 30 or 60 fps (because 3D) between processes is not as easy as it sounds.

Android does have a sandbox, so impact should be pretty limited if ever exploitable.
