News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

My plan is indeed to seed some initial data from areas that I know well.

I'm quite into paddle boarding at the moment and in the UK there are a lot of good places to launch from that are not well known so that would be a good niche to start with.

That is good feedback - much appreciated.

There isn't enough content to showcase on the map right now but I'll work on that. Give it another go in a couple of weeks or so.

I have just the thing for you. With a chattymap collection, you can tell stories about all those wonderful places and share them with the world:

The concept of altitude in this context makes a lot of sense
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026) on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @01:38PM (#48111556)
Hey, I really like what you're doing. It's great that you generate easily shareable links. I'm working on homestocompare.com which helps with house hunting in the UK. Would it be okay to link to individual results on your site?
Re:Interesting Daily Game on Tuesday June 24, 2025 @02:02PM (#44368949)
If a game like this gets super popular can it be monetised?
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025) on Monday May 26, 2025 @02:52AM (#44094698)
Looks good. I created propertywebbuilder.com as an open source real estate website builder some years ago. Had wanted to do something similar to mlsync next but never got round to it.

Hi there, I'm working on something similar for the UK. Happy to chat if you'd be interested in exchanging ideas.

Please run for president Jeff! Imagine an America led by Jeff Atwood - what a dream.
Re:Show HN: We made a photo search engine for homes for sale on Thursday March 20, 2025 @03:55PM (#43428100)
That's interesting, can you explain a bit more. How would you go about transforming the focal length or depth
Re:Does Kue bring true low-code to GIS analysis? on Wednesday December 11, 2024 @05:06AM (#42386405)
Shame this post did not gain much traction. I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say. Are there other similar tools out there? Is this likely to lead to a new path for GIS apps? Might be worth reposting as a ShowHN in a few days time.
Re:Ask HN: What open source projects need help? on Thursday November 28, 2024 @07:06AM (#42264633)
Hi there, sorry I've only just now seen your comment.

What is the best way to reach you?

You can send me a message on x: https://x.com/prptywebbuilder

Or via the linkedinpage for propertywebbuilder

Re:Show HN: I am Building a Producthunt alternative on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @03:07AM (#42243533)
Crikey, that looks horrible...

Any ideas what that is about? Sorry I don't understand the Forbes reference.

I'd love to resurrect my open source real estate website builder:

https://github.com/etewiah/property_web_builder

I was quite active with updating it a few years ago but haven't had the time to work on it recently.

On another project of mine I have been using aider and co-pilot and realised I could bring property_web_builder back to life with these tools. It would motivate me massively to do this if at least one or two other people were willing to work with me on this.

Great to hear - thanks. I will add several more over the coming days.
I like what you've done with zeli!!

It is a shame it did not get so much traction when you did your showHn.

One thing that I think would be useful alongside your summaries would be tags for each item. Have you considered that?

Thanks - I hope to be able to release it in the next few days.

Finding the right content to use for the podcast is quite important and I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to involve the community. Currently I host the audio files and GitHub and anyone is invited to contribute to that.

I checked out your Spotify and there is some good content there but I imagine it will be hard to rank on there.

Would you be interested in collaborating? I am based in the UK and I have some ideas around location based podcasts as well.

Wow this is awesome. I've actually been working on something very similar. In my case though I focus on individual stories. Like the commenter above I feel audio doesn't work so well for general overview.

I haven't done a showHN yet because it's not quite ready but you can see where it's at here:

https://news.gipety.com/hn/10842381/k/218/s/three-years-as-a...

I think it would be quite a nice way to give a second life to classic episodes of past showHNs and askHNs.

This post has become so popular I decided to create a podcast discussion of it using notebooklm. You can find the audio at the top of this page:

https://news.gipety.com/hn/41862332/k/175/s/ask-hn-founders-...

The podcast is quite convincing and entertaining but not as useful at bringing out all the key points as I'd hoped it would be. Still useful for getting a quick overview though.

Your wish is my command ;)

https://news.gipety.com/

You've got me thinking. Would this work for real estate data? A lot of sites make it quite hard to grab their raw data. Also, perhaps it could gain some insights from the photos...
I really like the concept of gnod. I started creating notebookLM audios of hacker news posts and realised it would be nice to have a directory of notebookLM audios generally. Will send you an email shortly about this. Would be nice to find someone to collaborate with on this.
Thanks, will do.
Nice. I asked a few days ago about alternatives to NotebookLM with an API and didn't get good answers.

I have started creating some audio podcasts of popular hacker news threads here:

https://github.com/etewiah/gipety-for-hacker-news

Will probably do a "Show HN" about it tomorrow or friday. If I get the chance I will try to do a couple using podcastfy (I agree with the other comment though - the name could be better..)

Great work - thanks for sharing.

Re:Cofounder Mode: A tactical guide to finding a cofounder on Wednesday October 16, 2024 @11:01AM (#41859864)
Just sent you an email now.
Wow, this could be just what I need for a project I'm working on now....
Great post, well written.

I almost thought it was written by a human till I got to "In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-assisted coding tools...."

Ha ha, love this.

It just so happens that I am working on a tool that ends up expanding hacker news urls. The problem I was solving was that of managing lots of replies to a successful post.

I allow you to replace the "ycombinator" in a hacker news item url with "gipety" so this current thread would point to:

https://news.gipety.com/item?id=41780255

You will then get a page that remembers the comments currently displayed. On subsequent refreshes you will see any new comments highlighted in green.

As I worked on it I decided to also add a slug as I got tired of not recognising what the urls I was copy pasting were referring to.

The above will for example end up generating this:

https://news.gipety.com/hn/41780255/k/67/s/show-hn-i-made-a-...
