I find it all the more disturbing that a patronymic surname has become a forename.

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:11AM (#50272995)
Counter point: the (super) yacht industry employs a huge number of skilled workers who take immense pride in their craft (pun intended).
Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:13AM (#50272360)
this is principally why banking exists at all, farmers needed to borrow against a harvest that hadn't yet been planted.

I'd suggest some controls or limits to it, but the lenders assume the risk ( except for all the times the public has had to bail them out) and they're grown up corporations who can decide for themselves.

I should add, that the money they borrow does get taxed when it is spent on the indulgences you make reference to.

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:47AM (#50272079)
Writer doesn't appear to know the difference between income and wealth.

Every year there are fewer povvos in the world, and we're just getting started.

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:46AM (#50272054)
Tax on wealth - or in reality tax on unrealised gains is absurd, it's a tax on a cat in a box.
Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:03AM (#50243896)
Printable does not mean it will be printed, if a page is printable one can assume the creator hasn't fucked with the scroll wheel for example, or forced you to sit through unnecessary animations.
Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:01AM (#50243880)
I think you can generate html from latex, I use latex for my CV and render it as a pdf for circulation.
Re:Reforming English Spelling on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:11AM (#50241899)
I had a quick browse and found some mispronunciations on there.
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:52AM (#50241786)
my kids have a personal music/story player (Yoto portable for those curious, it can be loaded with your own recordings if the cost of the licenced cards is too much).

The big one (5) has a camera, we also play guessing games (like the classic "animal, vegetable, or mineral" but usually specific to their interests such as animal, instrument, etc).

They both like books and will sit with them for upto an hour uninterrupted despite the younger one's inability to read.

After that, a switch, or a heavily curated selection of videos might be available.

I think screens are fine in moderation, almost all parents do it, but it's far from the only option.

look, look! A millenial father observing bird species in an effort to stave off cognitive decline, rarely seen away from his burrow and demanding offspring, we can see from its markings that this one was once a hipster, note the foliage pattern about it's left radiocarpal.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:30AM (#50167912)
I think for a Bonneville record the wheels have to be in contact with the ground.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:26AM (#50167832)
have you ever sat in one?

I would say the quality might be high for an american car but here in europe it's absolute dogshit tier.

Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:56AM (#50166543)
if I could have macos on an ipad pro I'd stop using my macbook forever, it would be the perfect device, until then it's just a big phone, and since I replaced my iphone with a watch I don't need either pad or phone.
Re:DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:51AM (#50166450)
I suppose the very reason why we haven't seen ads yet is that they're trying to figure out how to prevent exactly this.
most people's exposure to philosophical concepts is through narrative abstraction, you may be an exception but if you want to interact with laypeople this is inevitably going to be your experience.
Re:The Brain Sandwich on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:21AM (#50151515)
the latter only exists because of this misunderstanding.

Besides don't most people refer to the croissant in substitute for sandwich "ham and cheese croissant"?

Re:The Brain Sandwich on Monday October 19, 2026 @04:08AM (#50149662)
>Your brain, and then

>AI, and then

>Your brain

I'm sorry but this is not a "brain sandwich" this is an ai sandwich...when a slice of ham is between two slices of bread do we call it a "bread sandwich"?

Re:Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:36AM (#50116221)
I'm not sure what industry you're in but professionally when we talk about one instrument's relationship to an underlying asset we describe it as tracking or following it, even if that tracking/following is some function of the underlying rather than a direct linear relationship, rarely in life is anything directly proportional.

"Kept pace with" is fine, consider using this in future.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:32AM (#50102206)
true but the pieces we value are also being pried from our hands.

I also don't think it compares to the industrial revolution, these are primarily sociological conditions - these suicidality figures predate the current AI implications.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:30AM (#50102185)
those things are evidence of that societal pressure relaxing...they simply weren't an option before.
Re:Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI on Thursday October 15, 2026 @04:42AM (#50100948)
on the contrary "not tracking" implies no relationship.
Re:Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:04AM (#50068755)
2. They have, there just isn't a linear relationship, which should've been obvious from the start.
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:54AM (#50068660)
I have and the guy you're replying to is correct.

If you find yourself in that position it's a skill issue, or a job issue.

Re:Secret of Orange Cats Revealed After 60-Year Search on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:54AM (#50057312)
I agree but I don't think it's related to prejudice against redheaded humans, wrt the cats I think it's some sort of confirmation bias.

Have had >13 cats in my life, and they're all fucking weird.

Re:Crest – an Arc-inspired open-source browser for Mac on Monday October 12, 2026 @06:15AM (#50054150)
I want Arc without Chromium, and Zen without Mozilla, Ladybird seems pretty far off.
Re:Why Were Victorian Elites So Effective? on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:33AM (#50017689)
there's nothing wrong with indirect rule, everyone benefitted in the long run.
Re:Why Were Victorian Elites So Effective? on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:32AM (#50017686)
>Some of that is unavoidable tragedy, but quite a lot of it is direct mismanagement (especially fervent devotion to a "work sets you free" mindset and free market capitalism).

It was all going so well until you spewed propaganda, believe it not the provinces administered by the British were least affected by disease and famine primarily because of the infrastructure and institutions that'd been established in them. Additionally, we have a better insight into those regions because of the record keeping again introduced by the bureaucracy forced upon them...

Re:Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too? on Monday October 05, 2026 @07:03AM (#49963288)
I fucking wish mate.

I had a really good food disposal bin, it had a novel locking handle that held the lid fast in two places. It was stolen by someone who did not have this bin style, my cameras didn't catch who or when, it could even have been the waste-disposal people for all I know. Regardless when I contacted my local council for replacement they sent a smaller bin; the same everyone else on the street has, one with a long lever lock on top that is completely in effective at preventing foxes from opening it, and distributing the pungent contents across my lawn, driveway, and to various neighbours.

It is just entertainment, and advertising.

>I was at a GP in september, something you do very much for the noise

Why spend all that money when you can goto the local farmyard and watch them shuffle tractors around, if you close your eyes they're indistinguishable

perhaps just stick to subjects you're more informed on
