Re:Tech layoffs keep stacking up on Friday July 01, 2022 @11:51AM (#31948182)
I don't see how you can say this. The 2 most valuable tech companies started in the 2000s are Facebook and Google. Those 2 companies are glorified Ad Companies that happen to provide a service so they can aggregate data to sell more ads.

Other than organizing the information of the internet (lately it is debatable as to how well they have been doing this lately) via google, what value addition would you say facebook or google is providing?

Same thing with Uber, now that VCs are no longer subsidizing Car rides for the entire world, it's just a more expensive cab.

What are the tech ventures that have been adding value addition to society. Based on the experience i've had with family members becomes complete Q psychos i'd say net negative on facebook's part and they dont even build anything.

Maybe you should buy a larger car. The amount of people buying land yachts lately and complaining about the price of gas is strange considering we all saw these prices <15 years ago.
New Yorkers are incredibly mannered, people return items in the subway that people drop or leave behind all the time.

The issue with finding lost items is that people would usually leave them at the police station, if you're familiar with the NYC police department you would know they are one of the most corrupt and overbudgeted forces in the world.

For some reason theyre not returning lost items to people or actually interested in doing so.

They're really good at standing around and parking illegally though.

The issue here is not "engineering talent" The current hodge podge of Health care apps, web sites and and insurance systems all work correctly.

The business logic is broken.

This shouldn't be surprising 70% of the GDP output of the USA are from counties won by Biden.

Wealthier people live longer than poor people.

The current republican party provides a hate machine with no actual solutions other than tax cuts for the rich and culture war for the rubes.

All that is left for the Red counties is anger and despair delivered nightly via Fox news and the right wing lie machine.

Re:Ask HN: What happened to Twitter poison pill? on Monday April 25, 2022 @01:45PM (#31158267)
The poison pill can be used by the board of directors in case of a "hostile" takeover of the company.

In the case of a non "hostile" takeover, meaning the board approves the takeover price there is no poison pill to be used.

Policies can shared across accounts with orgs, in addition arns can be set to allow roles access from other accounts.

Boundary is mainly self contained but there can be interactions outside, sometimes significantly.

Having said that, under the hood who knows .

Re:Why Tech Moguls Are Obsessed with Building Utopian Cities on Monday February 22, 2021 @11:07AM (#26226098)
Software engineers in tech are not the kind of people that can make cities "better" and are no better positioned than any other well off profession.

The best cities are built organically.

Re:Oscar Health S-1 on Friday February 05, 2021 @05:50PM (#26042233)
Interesting that they mention

“ The Founders Awards are intended to retain and incentivize the Co-Founders to lead our company to sustained, long-term superior financial and operational performance. We believe the Founders Awards further align the Co-Founders’ interests with those of our long-term stockholders because the vesting, in addition to the value the Founders may realize from the Founders Awards, if any, will depend on the creation of significantly enhanced stockholder value over the seven years following the date of this offering. We expect the Founders Awards to replace the equity and long-term incentive compensation, if any, that we otherwise would have awarded to the Co-Founders during the seven years following this offering.”

Yet they’re not even involved in the day to day. Seems like another we work giveaway.

Twitter.com is not a public square. It’s a private property and they can kick your ass off whenever they feel like it, for any reason.

It’s funny cause the nypost is about to get sued out of existence.

Why was the pdf created in 2019? If the emails were supposedly found now and turned into a pdf for distribution.

It’s almost as if Rudy Giuliani is terrible at committing crimes like he’s been doing for the past 4 years.

Indexes are up because the wealthy were bailed out with the “stimulus”, which was free money printed by the fed and given to people who don’t need it, lead them to just put it in the “market” since again there’s nothing to spend your money on currently other than stocks and real estate, this only leads to higher assets prices.

The fact that the us government took zero equity positions despite bailing out the wealthy will be discussed for decades.

TLDR money printer go brrrrrrrr

Re:Yelp’s anti-racist social credit nightmare on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @08:56AM (#24775958)
Then you should petition the government to break up their monopolies.

I forgot I was speaking with conservative trash.

the free market is perfect except when they get called on being trashy racists. Then it’s a big problem!

Re:Yelp’s anti-racist social credit nightmare on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @08:54AM (#24775943)
No, that’s not how utilities work.

Also I didn’t see where anyone in the article said they were removing listings.

Trash people don’t want to be called trash by people who they treat like trash.

Re:Yelp’s anti-racist social credit nightmare on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @08:48AM (#24775895)
Anyone is perfectly able to start a competitor to Yelp. If Yelp feels this adds to their value they are more than welcome to do this. Clearly Yelp weighed the pros and cons and decided this would help their business.

What’s the issue here? Don’t see how comparing a business to the ccp government is comparable in the slightest.

On edit, its clear the author has an axe to grind.

Trash article by trash people.

Re:How to Interview Engineers on Monday October 12, 2020 @02:29PM (#24757717)
Am I the only who stopped reading when the author outlined their question?

How many games of tic tac toe are “valid”? What does valid mean? As usual the problem with hiring software isn’t measuring “talent” “iq” or “personality”. These things are arbitrary, it’s communicating business needs to an engineer and having the engineer build the system based on the needs of said business.

As always the issue is communication, and the author makes it clear despite him thinking long and hard he’s not able to effectively communicate what the interviewer actually wants.

Edit...

Upon reading through the comments and seeing everyone having a different answer, simply proves my point.

Re:Twilio set to acquire Segment for $3.2B on Friday October 09, 2020 @07:41PM (#24735506)
This seems cheap, segment was doing great especially with sass the way it is now.
So Twitter can turn over the information and allow investigators to determine whom or where the user was from.
I agree that elan is full of shit a lot of the time. But you’re not doing yourself any favors , to compare 11k cars sold in Germany versus the rest of the German / international auto makers.

The fact that they are growing during economic headwinds shows that people are still interested in their product.

The word you’re looking for is evil. Not “scummy”.
As soon as he starts claiming (with zero evidence) voter fraud and instigating insurrection against president elect joe Biden, I guarantee Twitter will be ban him before Biden’s swearing in.
Re:Uber secures right to continue operating in London on Monday September 28, 2020 @07:30AM (#24615485)
You’re not rich, you can’t afford a private car that can pay for a a massively overgrown company and a drivers livelihood.

There’s a reason the cost is so high for cabs in London. Great public transportation and high col. if you’re complaining about the cost of a cab ride , remember the cost would be the same if Uber marketing wasn’t subsidizing your rides.

It’s leaded gasoline. My parents generation were poisoned by it and is a significant reason for the dip in the critical thinking skills of this country.

Ah yes the lame stream media. Which such huge gaffes such as......
In order to stay in the country usually a founder will work for the company as a contractor. I know of several founders who technically work as a freelancer for company A. while they run Company B.

Company A takes a chunk of equity for holding the visa.
