I enjoyed it, good refresher on CSS grids, thanks for sharing
Re:Google Axis on Monday February 14, 2011 @01:16AM (#2215565)
There is a link on this page to http://www.googledemolition.com/ also, which looks like another project waiting for a takedown notice..
Your relaxed attitude to privacy is enough to make me never use that site, sorry.

The fact that it is a 'pain' to make the effort to protect someones identity means you're probably in the wrong business.

Just testing it out on Android, everything I tried seemed to work perfectly. Great design and CSS work :)

Perhaps some sorting & filtering options on the dashboard? An 'overdue, current and complete tabs?

Re:Burnout, How to Recover on Tuesday July 27, 2010 @06:54AM (#1550838)
The content was interesting, if you can look past the repetive "you are pushed to burnout" comments. It really detracts from the message and feels a lot like a powerpoint presentation
Re:Ask HN: Job Titles for Sole Operators? on Thursday March 11, 2010 @05:13AM (#1183446)
Interesting idea, I did consider "Your Web Guy"

Ask HN: Job Titles for Sole Operators?

I am rebranding my business at the moment, and trying to decide what job title (if any) I should put on a business card.I am a sole operator, I do web design, coding, hosting, but am trying to focus more on the music industry, working with bands to promote them through the web via websites, facebook, twitter etc. Ideas are welcome :)Also, as sole operators, what titles do you use?

I feel it would. Imagine a script kiddie in Australia decides to join the DDOS attack on the government site.

He is easily traced by IP, and the Australian Federal Police come to visit.

His new 'rights', now that he is part of a terror group include:

Being held for up to nine days in detention without being formally charged.

Warrantless searches

The seizure of any objects associated with the terrorist act (this is quite a wide open definition, basically anything you own is up for grabs)

Also the AFP have some quite invasive computer techniques that are used to go wandering through your system before they knock on the door.

I thinks its only a matter of time before Anonymous gets labelled a terrorist organisation to increase the counter measures / invasive laws that can be used against them.

Disrupting Goverment sites and services would be considered as an attack as per the Australian Terrorism definition:

(e) seriously interferes with, seriously disrupts, or destroys, an electronic system including, but not limited to

(i) an information system; or

(ii) a telecommunications system; or

(iii) a financial system; or

(iv) a system used for the delivery of essential government services; or

(v) a system used for, or by, an essential public utility; or

(vi) a system used for, or by, a transport system.

I do like the variety of AMA posts on reddit, but the amount of crap to wade through in the comments is getting quite tiresome. They seem to be posted to HN a lot more lately also?

You can get an RSS feed of the subreddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/.rss

Re:1964 Modem Reaches Out And Touches The Internet on Monday February 08, 2010 @09:00PM (#1111306)
I have been searching and can't find any info about this? Got any more details/link?
Re:1964 Modem Reaches Out And Touches The Internet on Monday February 08, 2010 @08:25PM (#1111238)
I would be wary about broadcasting the IP address, username and a filmed typing of the password to a tech community.

It would take very little work to determine the password from watching that video a few times.

Re:Make Something Users Care About on Friday February 05, 2010 @01:08AM (#1102852)
That was hard to watch, the graphic below the video explained it all, minus his awkward stage performance.
Re:Courts determine Australian ISPs not liable for users piracy. on Wednesday February 03, 2010 @08:51PM (#1099530)
The problem lies in a small number of politicians holding the swing vote in our policy making. Unfortunately one of the main players is "Family First", a conservative Christian political group who are basically trying to impose 'good christian values' on all Australians. So to get a major parties policies through, they do 'deals' with these minor groups, like supporting extreme censorship.

You can read more about this wonderful group here http://www.familyfirst.org.au/Policies.htm

Some things they oppose include abortion, euthenasia, cloning, needle exchange programs for drug users, unfiltered internet pornography...

It saddens me that our current politicians do not see the damage such policies will have in the future. They are trading our future freedom to ensure their current political aspirations are met.

I would guess the autonomous image recognition will be for use in the drones, which seems to be the way US warfare is heading.

It still makes me uncomfortable, the thought of armed drones wandering our skies. I often wonder if the future wars will be about cyber warfare in controlling those drones?

Re:WhoIs.com hacked / dns redirected? on Saturday January 16, 2010 @08:06PM (#1057813)
It's not often Whois.com gets hacked. Even worse if its a DNS attack, given that is their primary business.

Got a screener here in case it gets fixed quick : http://imgur.com/guUzL

Re:TechCrunch Wall Of Shame on Friday July 17, 2009 @01:15AM (#709325)
Isn't flagging something effectively 'down modding' it? Sorry I don't know much about the HN ranking algorithms.
Re:TechCrunch Wall Of Shame on Friday July 17, 2009 @01:07AM (#709316)
Being a vote-driven (democratic) site, I think its an indication of how people feel about TC at the moment.

You may not like the link being there, but the majority of the community seems to be up voting it rather than flagging it, or it wouldnt be at #1.

Re:25 Things I Hate About Google on Thursday July 16, 2009 @03:58AM (#707516)
There are some valid points in this article, but the overtones of someone whinging about a free product "grinds my gears"

At some point did we come to expect perfection from a company that largely offers unprecedented services for free?

Take twitter as an example, its new and full of problems, no where near perfect. Yet all their issues are blindly written off as teething issues, even though we pay the same amount to use it as google.

Personally, I applaud googles efforts. There is a reason the tech savvy choose their products over others, because they are the best of the bunch, especially in the free arena.

Re:In Our Inbox: Hundreds Of Confidential Twitter Documents on Wednesday July 15, 2009 @03:10AM (#705309)
I would argue it brings to light the dangers of not having secure passwords, this applies to local networks and servers, not just web services.
Re:In Our Inbox: Hundreds Of Confidential Twitter Documents on Wednesday July 15, 2009 @03:08AM (#705307)
I wonder if he would see it as "news" if someone posted all of TechCrunch's private internal documents?
Re:In Our Inbox: Hundreds Of Confidential Twitter Documents on Wednesday July 15, 2009 @02:48AM (#705285)
Wouldnt the unethical thing be sitting there reading through a bunch of documents you know were illegally obtained? Then following it up by basically bragging about it..

TechCrunch is not what it used to be :(

Re:Google Maps – the $10k gotcha on Tuesday July 14, 2009 @08:12PM (#704875)
This very issue stopped me dead in my tracks when quoting for a recent project. I was put in touch with an Australian sales manager, from a 3rd party acting on behalf of google (this made me wary)

All communications mentioned 10k starting cost, with a final cost given when I provided detailed project objectives. This was not an option, as the project was confidential.

Suffice to say, I walked away from the project as I could not provide a cost to the client without allowing detailed project info to be passed on to a 3rd party. Also it seemed they were going to assess the project to see how much they could get away with charging me.

They put me in touch with : http://dmsbt.com/

its not like they hide the text that much though;

jsonArray.popups.i_0100_1 = {"stringified": "Brisbane,Queensland","mInput": "","mOutput": "", "popLinks": {"Brisbane, Queensland":"Brisbane"} };

Ask HN: Why is WolframAlpha serving rendered text images instead of plain text?

I am after some thoughts on why they would be doing this. I am a developer/designer and cannot think of any good reason for doing what can be done in CSS. Any ideas?Sample : http://www4d.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP6202195gdebi63ebi5b100001e27378a70be39cd?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=46* srry, for unclickable link

Re:Don’t hate me for my .NET on Saturday May 16, 2009 @08:54PM (#612788)
I can't agree more with this post, after attending the Google Developer day as a .Net developer, I felt very much out of place. Every demo was done using Python or PHP or Ruby...also being a HN lurker, there is rarely any interest in .Net stories amongst startup developers.

Another hurdle with adoption is the sense of having to pay for everything good. With languages born out of the open source movement, there are ample complete source code samples to download / use.

Try finding good open source .Net products like CMS's without having to pay, there are some, but nothing of the quality coming out of the likes of PHP / Ruby / MySQL.

Still I hack on, it might not be as l33t as the open source guys, but I get my prototypes built and running, and that same sense of accomplishment :)
