Re:Ask HN: Who's getting pulled back into the office? on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @05:21PM (#30279373)
There are a number of problems with WfH.

There's no work community or camaraderie at home. Doggo should count. Kittah jumping on the keyboard is just using you for food and grooming.

There's no grabbing lunches.

There's no visiting X down the hall.

No grabbing a beer after work.

Boss G, H, or J can't see you around.

Colleagues M, N, P, and Q don't have a sense of your performance or amount of work that happens far away. "Out of sight, ..."

Pair programming becomes less effective.

It's typing away by yourself like a writer, occasionally seeing "holograms" of other people on screens, or taking calls like you're working a call center.

Re:Interview questions to ask your interviewer on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @05:14PM (#30279280)
How's the food?

What do you do for fun after work?

The timeline seems like an unknowable due to the nature of technological progress: discontinuous jumps that usually require discover manufacturing techniques in secret.

Not as a UFO or conspiracy theory, but as a realization that there are some technologies intentionally kept secret to maintain military, political, or economic advantages.

When that distance between in-the-pipeline reaches a magnitude delta of 2, then I'd be concerned about what's already being designed or kept in secret.

Scaling QC is a difficult, unsolved problem of manufacturing.

Re:Why the hard drive is called C on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @04:33PM (#30278834)
Muhaha.

As a DoS of DOS: x:\> copy c:\config.sys CLOCK$

Also special DOS filenames:

    CON PRN AUX NUL {COM,LPT}[1-9]
https://superuser.com/questions/1362080/which-characters-are...

Print autoexec.bat to the dot matrix printer on LPT1?

    x:\> copy autoexec.bat lpt1
    x:\>
Create a file called foo.txt without an editor?

    x:\> copy con foo.txt
    whatever
    whatever
    whatever
    whatever
    ^Z<ENTER>
    x:\>

A social DoS of any machine with BASIC or similar.

10 INPUT "Press any key to continue..."; $X
    20 GOTO 10

When good floppies go bad:

    General Failure reading drive A:\.
    Abort, Ignore, Retry, Fail?
No one is "boring" with diversified interests. It's how to listen to others first, find common ground (human condition is easiest), and emphasize the highlights of one's own interests now and then.

If nothing done actively in work, consequences include:

Lower salary.

Fewer oppy's like management track.

Cool.

I was just thinking there ought to be an AI chat agent that can recommend music based on themes and mood, perhaps with a periodic, paradoxically-opposite sense of humor.

The very rich by ability and the very poor by inability to attain family planning, and everyone else in TX.

I maybe in a skewed population (FAANG) but women are much more aggressive here in urban areas. While I was walking downtown, a woman pulled her Mercedes over in traffic and shouted an offer at me. I thought she was hilarious and bold but not attractive enough.

In the past, this was sometimes a thing too: in 1943, my grandmother (15) decided to have my grandfather (21 - war vet at 17 by lying). Their 70-year marriage was technically illegal too.

Personal bias ftw.
Re:I decided to build a nine-bit computer on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @01:41PM (#30276541)
Hey, we don't need any Aladdin djinns showing off their magical puppers here. Definitely against guidelines and regulations. ;)
Re:I decided to build a nine-bit computer on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @01:40PM (#30276513)
2^(>64) combinations to put it back together. I find the empty set plus a Hackintosh seems to have fewer bits but work much faster. It must be those repairable qubits.
Re:The dangers of high status, low wage jobs on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @01:26PM (#30276242)
High status to whom? Anyone not an east-coast academic or urban professional?

I don't think journalism is widely-respected by the general population. Most local TV news anchors are an embarrassment because they to regurgitate Sinclair's "must airs" and bleeds/leads gore.

Chris Hedges entered the chat.

Every public K-12 teacher entered the chat.

Passive-aggressive ad hominems are disrespectful.

I suggest you re-read https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and apologize.

"Bushido" isn't archaic because it's used as a cultural-philosophical McGuffin theme in mainstream, modern ('00-present) movies.

"Carl" and "fie" are archaic.

I miswrote. Allow me to nail myself to the cross next to Whoopi. :)

Re:Words known better by males than females, and vice versa on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @01:01PM (#30275806)
Weird Al should have a yakuza-themed album with about half nerdcore and half alternately shouting and squealing in Japanese.

Dudes are all secretly gangsta OGs working up the food chain to be a baws someday.
Re:Words known better by males than females, and vice versa on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @12:57PM (#30275765)
My late grandfather (would've been 90's) didn't know quite as many questions on Jeopardy! as Ken Jennings, but within a std deviation.

When I was 20, if throwing out the sports deck, no one wanted to play Trivial Pursuit with me. Lol.

Re:Words known better by males than females, and vice versa on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @12:54PM (#30275718)
If technobabble, I'd be disappointed to not see "interposer" or "hash table" listed.
Meat ag is the problem. If everyone had piles of sausages, burgers. and steaks for every meal, food production would be incredibly difficult and expensive.
Why stop there?

Eliminate the entropic, commingling contamination problem by separately collecting 1, 2 and everything else for resource extraction.

Re:Ask HN: Is ADHD Real? on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @12:29PM (#30275358)
Real. ADHD-PI, -PH, and -C are approximations. Each person has a smattering of symptoms of the DSM-5 criteria. [0]

I'm classified closer to -PI because I'm not like a hyper woman friend, but I still have abour half of the symptoms in each area but not enough to be called -C.

My parents believed it was a psychiatry conspiracy theory, which only caused me more problems for years of non management.

Re:Operating without foreign key constraints on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @08:25PM (#30267421)
As long as the constraints are maintained within the DB correctly, it's cool. Some constraints are more complicated than FK constraints allow. Implementing as close to the DB as possible is a good idea.

To do it in app code would be a terrible idea because it throws FK referential (and data) integrity out the window.

Re:The Peter Thiel Paradox on Monday February 07, 2022 @08:17PM (#30253827)
You think, based on what specifically? I don't think you know the history or how it was legitimized. Thom Hartmann has spent a few hours on this very subject across various shows. Checking facts, he gets them right every time. Cato (climate change deniers with phony IPCC reports), Koch (dirty industries tax write off), and Reason Foundation (libertarian grooming factory by rich reporters and rich celebrities pushing a viewpoint, not academics or independent professional journalists) often promulgate ideas that aren't helpful to anyone except the rich and those who vote against their own interests with an "alternative flavor" of "freedom" that isn't free for anyone but the well-off.

Generalizing all political systems together is intellectually lazy and lacks nuance. Extreme utopian ideals like communism, libertarianism, and anarchism don't scale in the real world. I think you need to learn more about each of them in detail before you write it off as tribal "muh green team is better becuz it's mine." You're coming across as lacking in knowledge, experience, and a leg to stand on and going for a cheap shot.

Practical is somewhere in the middle that gets things done and considers enough peoples' needs. There are dumb ideas, like for-profit healthcare, for-profit policing, "everyone picking themselves up by their bootstraps (as misinterpretation of a children's parable)", hyper-individualism, and doing away with government (anarchy, anarcho-capitalism).

Having done computer architecture and bit twiddling x86 in the ye olden days, I immediately, independently converged on the patented solution (code / circuit / Verilog, more or less the same thing). It goes to show how broken the USPTO is because it's obvious to anyone in the field. Patents are supposed to be nonobvious. (35 USC 103)

https://patentdefenses.klarquist.com/obviousness-sec-103/

This isn't a political post, it's a potential hilarity / ironic one.

Btw, what would happen if a Justice behaved inappropriately to another one?

Toxic positivity and toxic negativity are grating to some, myself included.

The issue is that soft, squishy not-STEM "sciences" aren't all that evidence-based or experimentally-verifiable. That doesn't make them completely useless, it makes them prone to fungible, inconsistent guidelines rather than hypotheses, theories, or laws.

Anywhere non-ECC storage or computation occurs before it hits hashing or distributed, it's a SPoF.
Re:Is SkyNews on PlutoTV Android/TV Apps Broken? on Monday February 07, 2022 @02:14PM (#30249580)
Android mobile, tablet, TV, etc. apps.

Changing channels to it results in nothing. It goes to WeatherNation, Bloomberg, or anything else but Sky News only on every Android device within the app.

It works in the browser and iOS apps.
