Re:Ask HN: Why aren't micropayments a thing? on Friday January 22, 2021 @03:52PM (#25876222)
Is the Brave browser a pseudo-solution to this problem? It can hold a crypto coin balance and either collect more of it through advertisements or pay it out to publishers like news sites.
Re:The parenting style that creates leaders on Friday January 01, 2021 @11:46AM (#25604492)
Skills associated with great leadership have many applications outside of leadership itself. Traits such as high empathy, confidence, creativity, flexibility make great leaders, but also just generally make great people. It would be no surprise the two are correlated!

Strong opinions and weak arguments.

For the record, I want a self-driving car and 9 out of 10 captchas confirm I am a human.

Re:Stop giving Wikipedia money on Thursday December 04, 2014 @09:11AM (#8699247)
215 employess x Avg tech-based salary ( $85,000) = 18, 275, 000 / yr. Add the 6, 000, 000 to awards and grants and the 2, 500, 000 in server hosting (which seems awfully slim) = 26, 775, 000 / yr. Their cash reserves just barely cover a year of operating costs at LAST year's expenses. If they wish to continue expanding their reach year over year, as any well minded business should, their yearly expenses from just these 3 items would most likely eclipse their cash reserves within the one year period. Zero cash reserves would halt all investments, meaning their current state wouldn't cover two years of these three liabilities without donations. So, now what?
Re:Ask HN: What are you thankful for? on Thursday November 27, 2014 @04:33PM (#8668810)
I'm a bit lazy so I'm going to copy/paste this from a Reddit reply I made earlier this week. But, the story is what I'm very thankful for this year:

I don't have any directly related advice but let me give you some advice anyways. About a year ago I asked this subreddit for help on starting a niche website that would compete with the likes of Etsy, Ebay, Tindie, and Amazon. I was working as a body shop manager at the time and knew absolutely nothing about web development, programming, or anything particularly tech-related. Of course, I got a lot of flack from our fellow redditors. So, after feeling a bit beat down, I tried to take their negative comments as inspiration and began learning as much as I could about web development. Now, just a year later, I'm working as web dev for a large multi-national firm that makes a substantial impact in some major aspects of the web. I'm much happier, living in a new awesome city, and making significantly more money than I was this time last year in result. I haven't realized my original idea that began this journey of mine but, none the less, the dream made a huge difference in my future. So, whatever you do, please, please, PLEASE don't let anyone here degrade your ambition. TLDR Fuck 'em.

And TLDR - Hacker News Version - Left years spend in a non-tech career, spent a year studying hard and traveling, and now am super happy working as a web developer!

My assumption is if you're at a stage of dev worth running New Relic then your app is probably worth the constant uptime. Out of the dozen or so Heroku apps I have only one or two are using New Relic. The rest are just experiments not worth the additional infrastructure waste.
The service is free. Can you include examples of brands or styles of clothing included? Maybe a sample of one month's package?

Wasn't expecting to see Pied Piper icons in the set...
