Absolutely! But they're not, IME, 6x as great as a $50 Lodge dutch oven. They don't solve a categorically different problem or solve the same problem in an innovative new way. They're just really nicely made, is all.

Re:You Have a Right to Know Why a Health Insurer Denied Your Claim

I had a doctor once recommend a temporary treatment that would be provided by a third party. I called the third party and asked how much it would cost; they had no idea. I called my insurance company and asked how much it would cost; they had no idea. I called my doctor and asked how much it would cost; they had no idea.
Literally nobody involved in the entire chain of providers had any idea how much it would cost. The best advice anybody could give me was to get the treatment, then look at the bill afterwards. (Oh, and nobody had any idea when I might get a bill either-- my wife is still receiving bills from the birth of our most recent child, 18 months ago.)

I spent a summer working in a hardware store up in Fairbanks, and my host/landlord decided to take me up to the Arctic Circle in his CJsomething Jeep. We were only a few miles up from the Circle when we kicked up a rock that punctured our oil pan. Thankfully, we were less than a mile from the last service station before the Arctic Circle, so we hitched a ride from a passing truck, and bought a bunch of oil and duct tape and just kept feeding the engine oil every few miles until we got back to Fairbanks.
Never did make it up to the Arctic Circle, though.

The only train I could find that goes anywhere near my mother's house would take approximately 12 hours, with a 5 hour layover in a small town with ~nothing to do. I can drive it in maybe 1.5 hours. That's why.

I tried it out on https://www.denverpost.com/2021/10/07/medina-alert-hit-run-c..., which I would think in general a group like Vision Zero would approve of, and it got a C (-1 points), because of the phrase, "[The] vehicle will have heavy damage". This seems pedantic, at best, since the whole point of that phrase is to help the public identify the vehicle (and presumably the driver) which was involved in the accident.

I just visited my boss in a WeWork space in San Jose, and it is the closest thing I've found so far to my idea of hell. The offices there have a unique combination of feeling exposed (from all the glass everywhere) and claustrophobic (from the tiny offices everywhere).

I'll have to see if I can adapt this to my somewhat idiosyncratic syntax:
SELECT field, other_field
FROM table
WHERE some_thing IN (
SELECT id
FROM other_table
)
AND other_field IS NOT NULL
(mostly it's right-aligning keywords, but there are a few other weird tweaks)

I was having trouble sleeping for a while; at one point my doctor recommending I go on oxygen for a while until she could figure it out. I called the company that provided the oxygen, and asked how much it would cost. Nobody knew. I called back 3 times, and still nobody could tell me. I called my insurance company; they couldn't tell me either. I ended up electing not to use it (which turned out to be perfectly fine), but it does seem like this was a fairly standard procedure, for outpatient stuff, and nobody involved knew what the prices were.

Look at the hair in the scene where they're in the ocean in Incredibles 1, and... pretty much any comparable scene in 2. The hair in 1 looks almost like plastic; in the sequel (or, even better, Moana), the wet hair looks much more lifelike.

Have you looked at public librarian salaries lately? A senior-- senior, mind you-- librarian at the Colorado Springs Library District is being offered $25/hr. I don't recall for certain by now, but I'm pretty sure I made more than that my very first year out of school and I'm practically decrepit by this site's standards.

My understanding is that if you ever have considered playing music in a business, you pretty much have to get licenses for all of them. AFAIK, ASCAP/BMI/Whoever don't operate their own services, so you're always at risk, if you don't get licenses from everybody, that whatever service you use will play a verboten song and poof there go your profits for the last N quarters.

Re:Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
on Friday June 29, 2018 @04:11PM (#17427479)
There's a significant difference, and that is that water and electricity can be meaningfully metered by volume, but Internet can't; that is to say, there is little to no meaningful marginal cost to your ISP for delivering 1GB of data vs 10GB. Bandwidth does have a marginal cost, but by and large data doesn't (yes, peering arrangements, it's more complicated, etc).

RSS doesn't need analytics. If you want analytics, put them on the links in the feed. If you want to know that people are reading the link at all, either put in an invisible pixel, or just include a paragraph with a [more...] link.
