Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @08:39AM (#49535369)
It is nice to see an attempt of sorts to discredit, and indeed Ed is not always right. But the bigger picture is debt fueled AI buildout frenzy, regulatory capture, monopolising and gating models, tokens/compute is still losing money compared to observable revenues from customers. Otherwise we would not need inventive accounting practices, SPV's, theatrics on distillation, stopping frontier development and so on.

But taking claims from Sundar about 750M gemini users in 2025 at face value is disingenuous. This basically includes everyone who owns an android phone and opened a Gmail and Google search, translate. Congrats, you are gemini user now. Every product has received AI "feature", like your android assistant offering to listen to you while the screen is still locked by default. Dan's only sources are press releases of the AI companies. As I'm reading this, he dedicates at least 3 paraghraphs showing how Ed is wrong. And keeps coming back to it again and again. Okay so we are both refuted and proven wrong, but is that really the extent of AI use? Is this the revolution? Replacing existing function with inaccurate AI sourced from reddit posts?

I've read a number of both blogs. I'm not gonna watch Diary of CEO video. Yes, models have gotten crazy good in 2 years. Still the same failure modes. Dan's writing here comes across as same type of gish gash he rails against, minus the entertainment value.

Re:The Dark Side of the Moomins on Monday April 14, 2025 @09:08AM (#43680877)
Another way to view it is a series that accompanies a child to young adult years. (It took me a few years to get through the series inbetween other books. I assume many bedtime reads for the first few, and independent reading for later ones). What starts as fantastical and whimsical, indeed becomes more somber and concerning interpersonal dynamics, especially those within Moomin family and those around them. "Moominpapa at Sea" is probably most relatable to adult readers. The underlying message of family unity, finding ways to cope with certain events, parenting styles, need to break routines (picnics), unrequited crushes.

Moominland Midwinter is interesting character study too, with sporty "artistic" coded Hemulen proving too much for most of the cast to handle, the forgetful grandpa. Perhaps the message was it is okay to not be friends with everyone as it is a bother.

Compare it to "Finn Family Moomintroll" which is just a constantly stacking ridiculous lighthearted escapade with a few more mature jokes mixed in.

Tangentially related, I became aware how my (in)ability to reason 3 intertwined different programming languages across different files can be conveniently called as my own "context window". (the example here is HTML/CSS/JS where LLM greatly exceeds my own capacity).

>“the AI has no ground truth” (obviously it does, it has ingested every paper ever)

It also ingested every reddit thread and tweets of every politician ever.

It is a good read. Surprising amount of Parrot defenders in the comments, probably missed "LESSON 6 : No, They Aren't Doing That".

Show HN: Resilience Checklist – itemized list of EU CRA

https://resilience-checklist.eu/

Hey HN!I made this checklist to translate the requirements of EU Cyber Resilience Act into action items.Navigating standards is no easy task, and if you have tried to read the original document, it contains a lot of circular requirements: Obligations > Annex II > Technical Documentation> User Documentation> Essential Requirements.. etc...The objective is to provide an informative...

"Don't worry, the software in question seems to have fallen out of favor and cannot hurt you."

It may not be the software in question, but proprietary snowflake entitlement management software that has a lot of black box and proprietary voodoo, that does not have any disaster recovery capacity and would be considered tech debt a decade ago... Disgracefully came into life in the year 2021. It did not gracefully recover from clownstrike to say the least.

Re:Microsoft's Commitment to Azure IoT on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @04:36AM (#39439397)
A year ago I was looking for OPC-UA GDS / PKI solutions.

I came across this 2018 announcement full of fanfare https://azure.microsoft.com/de-de/blog/automating-industrial...

However in the year 2023 all was delivered was OPC publisher and it seemed like MS has cooled off it's ambitions for industrial protocols.

Conspiracy theory but multiple streaming sites using the same language is an interesting set-up for future(or present) anti-piracy lobbying.

Re:The Day Windows Died on Monday April 03, 2023 @07:40AM (#35421817)
Windows 11 is on hysterical trajectory these days. Recently they pushed in a search bar in the taskbar by default. They should rename it to Bing OS to capitalize. Using windows start menu search will fire off 5 requests to bing, Edge embedded everywhere. Usability out of the box is not only bad, it's net negative. A lot of effort has to be put to disable distracting features. Meanwhile simple file compression support still relies on other applications. For a "professional" or "enterprise" OS that is unacceptable.

As someone who didn't like genepi, I found Verveine du Velay interesting. Perhaps it's less rare herbs, still nice green color, less complex.

I also hope the security conference in Grenoble will secure it's supply of Chartreuse (you get a small 50cl bottle in the welcome package for as long as I remember)

Re:Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis: a genius cursed by fate? on Tuesday February 07, 2023 @04:40AM (#34690644)
It's stunning how masterfully he integrates ethnographic motives in his works, how fantastical yet familiar the imaginary landscapes feel. As a kid, I found them deeply inspiring. Visiting his namesake gallery last year, I could appreciate how "Lithuanian" it all felt to me. This post makes me want to revisit and explore the more musical parts of his œuvre.
Re:I think I built a Liberal Arts college on the internet on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @08:43AM (#28220273)
He mentions another project, https://arrangedmarriages.co/

>We arrange marriages for millennials and zoomers tired of endless dating.

>It's free to apply (takes about 4 minutes). We only ask for payment when we find you a spouse.

Any takers?

Re:Ask HN: What are you learning? on Sunday April 05, 2020 @01:31PM (#22786949)
I am also learning pentesting, for the cert and to have some methodology in my job ( somewhere between devops/compliance/security). First week into PWK course, I used hackthebox and thecybermentor's practical pentesting course to build up confidence to attempt getting that long wanted OSCP title.
You can sometimes grab these ssh keys if the server has a severe directory traversal, local-file-inclusion vulnerability(run server/DB as root) , or to use for pivoting to different user/machine... But never heard of these being exposed outright.
Re:Phones Emitting the Most Radiation on Monday February 11, 2019 @08:06AM (#19134124)
Interesting to see the W/kg measurement all over the place between the same manufacturer and same series phones.

Huawei P8 Lite 0.39, Huawei P8 - 1.72.

It doesn't seem to be a manufacturing requirement for some, as long as it is below a certain threshold. Pricing, release dates, amounts of SIM cards supported have little correlation at a glance.

Re:Why does APT not use HTTPS? on Monday January 21, 2019 @07:17AM (#18959839)
Indeed, something similar happened just last week. theHacker News(not to be confused with HN) twitter lashed out at VLC for not updating over https, which essentially uses same(ish?) code signing as described by APT. A bit of a shit show.

In case it is not obvious ( for me it wasn't ), you can only acceess the puzzle through github login button. Registering doesn't give you access to the puzzle.
