News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Less then $1/month if you've got low traffic. I haven't used this, but I have this type of setup for a static site that uses Hugo.

- S3 costs: $0.10/month

- Route53: $0.50/month ($0.50 per hosted zone)

S3 costs could be lower - I have other buckets with stuff that count towards my cost.

Probably the AWS m4 instance type, meant for general purpose workloads (and replaced with the m5 instance type about a year ago).

More info: After messing around with the image levels, the faded text shows as "Eternal Vigilance is the price of Liberty" (a quote which has been incorrectly attributed to numerous famous figures: https://www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/eternal-vigilance-...)

The man in the foreground appears to be George Washington. There's some barely visible text in the space above the cannon ("Pri"; "Lib") but I can't make out the rest (I'd guess something about liberty).
Re:CNN.com quietly turned on TLS/HTTPS over the weekend on Tuesday April 03, 2018 @11:28AM (#16745581)
I just tried http://yahoo.com and it gave me a 301 redirect to https://www.yahoo.com. (Same with http://www.yahoo.com).
Re:CNN.com quietly turned on TLS/HTTPS over the weekend on Monday April 02, 2018 @06:41PM (#16740130)
http://example.com is my go-to.
Update: I've changed the API used from ipify.org to ipapi.co, which plays more nicely with uBlock.
Another goal was to keep this super cheap, quick, and familiar, so this uses a static site hosted on S3. Pennies per month, but no server-side power.

I'm not a web dev by trade, so perhaps there's a way to make it work. Maybe using WebRTC with a fallback to ipify for IE. Something to investigate!

Yeah, I know - it uses ipify.org and my guess is some sites might use it for tracking, which is a shame. Note that no ads or tracking are used for the site, and I added a page showing uBlock users how to only allow calls to ipify from this domain.

While Google and https://api.ipify.org/ are cool and fast and memorable, this started as a side project to make it easy to copy and display in the tab title as well (plus I found a cheap domain). Thanks for clicking!

Kayaking works similarly for me. Nothing serious or intense, just a cheap rental in a slow river or bay.
Same option on Android - I'm curious if this is related as well, or if there are separate Google analytics being sent.
Yep, UC Health as in the medical care provider associated with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Press release regarding the breach here:

http://uchealth.com/press-releases/daniel-drake-center-for-p...

Side note - I'm a patient of UC Health and hadn't seen this news until now, but I'm also not within the scope of this breach. They've been great medically, but I agree with the post that some follow-up information would be much better.

Re:Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs on Friday February 17, 2017 @12:21AM (#13666137)
But what about the three-word sentence "I communicate well"?

More seriously, the most that reading "I'm a good communicator" tells me is that the writer can form sentences reasonably.

Succinct? Sure, but it's still so broad. When I'm working with someone, I would appreciate a troubleshooting message of "The Flob server is saying clients don't have the right Gruffin anymore." instead of "Flob isn't working."

Obviously this depends on context, but choosing where to be succinct is key. My project manager would much rather hear "Flob is down for half the users - we'll have a patch tested and deployed by tomorrow afternoon" than "Flob broke, and we're fixing it".

"I have a proven history of writing clear and efficient end-user documentation" and "I'm someone people enjoy bouncing ideas off of" give me more confidence in someone's communication skills than "I'm a good communicator".

Re:What It Takes to Truly Delete Data on Friday February 03, 2017 @12:53PM (#13561667)
Wow, this is the first I've heard of photos being taken at a register. Do you mind sharing what store this was, or if it was triggered by the purchase of a specific item?

I realize this request to reveal where you shopped, or what item you bought, is in response to your objection to being tracked, so I understand if you'd rather not say :)

Re:A Bed for Fifty People? on Wednesday November 16, 2016 @02:38PM (#12970655)
The calculation of 25 people uses a twin mattress as a comfortable fit for one person, not two.

In the US, a twin mattress is the smallest adult size available, and is almost always seen as a one-person bed. I usually see queen-sized mattresses marketed as the average-size bed for two people, and full (one size up from twin) recommended as the comfortable choice for single sleepers.

http://bettersleep.org/mattresses-and-more/mattress-sizes has a good overview of mattress size standards (at least for the US).

Note that some phones do mirror the front-facing camera view (though actual photos taken are not mirrored) [0]. Both my Nexus phones have done this, so I assume it's a common Android feature. I don't know about iPhones.

Regarding webcams: Hangouts also mirrors your camera to you during video calls. [1]

Re:Facebook forces user to use messenger on mobile site on Friday November 11, 2016 @10:47AM (#12931647)
Messenger view on mobile has unexpectedly started working for me over the past week or so. No changes that I'm aware of, I'm not in desktop mode, and it was definitely redirecting to the app store before.

Has anyone else noticed this too? Any speculation on what might've changed?

Re:Best method to cancel human voices at work or public space? on Thursday October 06, 2016 @07:01PM (#12656845)
A few folks have mentioned white noise already. I used to work in an open-office layout with about 50 people, and I found it was much easier to mentally cancel out the chatter with consistent, light, inoffensive background noise than to try to create silence.

http://mynoise.net was great, and I only had a $10 pair of in-ear earbuds. I haven't used the site since changing jobs, but I remember liking Rain On A Tent, Wooden Chimes, and mumbly-voice environments like Laundromat and Airport Terminal.

Re:Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer” on Thursday September 08, 2016 @04:03PM (#12456777)
Please correct me if I'm wrong - I think phrasing the request appropriately is a big part of this, and could mitigate a lot of potential misunderstanding. Something like:

"Would you be interested getting coffee sometime?"

Definitely sounds like a date setup to me, so framing it as (1) more immediate than a planned date, and (2) work related would be much better. Something more like:

"I'm going to grab some coffee in a minute, wanna join?” or "I'd like to discuss some work stuff with you, do you have time later today to chat over coffee?"

Again, these are just my initial thoughts so I'd be interested to hear if it doesn't actually make much of a difference.

Re:Over 20 designers have copied my website and I don't mind on Monday February 02, 2015 @11:35PM (#8988876)
I found it interesting that three images were commented out of the article:

http://www.adhamdannaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/desi...

http://www.adhamdannaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/desi...

http://www.adhamdannaway.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/desi...

I can only guess why they weren't included, but it does seem like they're less blatant rip-offs than the others.

Based on this, it seems like a more accurate title would be "House passes bill forbidding scientists from advising the EPA on their own research", similar to the article's actual title.

That said, I found Science's article[0] to be a better (or at least less sour-toned) review of the situation, stating that the bill bars "panelists from discussing their own research".

The Aurora release channel might be what you're looking for - it's between the beta and nightly channels. I find it to be exciting and fairly stable.

Re:Why do we eat grains? Thermodynamics on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @09:24AM (#5400698)
I'm confused about the table in the middle of the article. If rice and corn have the same amount of kcal per 100g (365), and rice has a higher yield per acre than corn (7700lbs vs. 6900lbs), how does rice have a lower Calories per acre number? Is there another conversion I'm not seeing?
Re:Hacking the <a> tag in 100 characters on Sunday March 17, 2013 @12:47PM (#5389872)
Firefox 21 (Aurora), I got sent to PayPal - just realized that I had NoScript on, though. Allowed scripts for bilaw.al, tried again, and I got sent to the dummy page.

I got sent to the dummy page on Opera 12.13 and Chrome 25. Just updated to Opera 12.14 and I still got sent to the dummy page. Running Windows 7.
