Hey all! I'm Nick, co-founder at FieldDay. We are launching our app publicly today and I'm excited to show it to the HN community. With the new wave of AR/camera devices and latest AI breakthroughs, we think now is the time to build a camera-first app platform. We are starting by shipping a tool that allows you to train custom models from your phone. You can collect and manage data from your...

What are the security/market/competitors implications? Upsides and downsides in your opinion. Would you like to see it? etc etc

Are you using scripts, software, etc/hosts?
What are the best solutions? Preferably you should able to set timings (e.g. ban Reddit from 9 to 6 on workdays)

I was about to http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html. A really awesome (it seems to me for now) plugin for Apple Mail that enables tags. But before that I wondered if I haven't missed anything and will regret spending the money. I'd love to use something that I know will be there in 10-20 years rather than pretty and trendy software products like Sparrow... as they all have the same fate - either...

I'm looking for an internship for the next summer. I know how to use Google (or DDG in my case) but I thought asking here wouldn't hurt since I'm sure lots of HN users have experience with past internships in London. Any info at all is highly appreciated!I was hoping Mozilla had an open place in Europe (ideally London) but it doesn't seem to be the case. So, where should I apply? Thanks in advance.
How come people with papers on machine learning are doing internships? Is this absolutely necessary before landing a job?
Been using Slate as well but it's not maintained anymore. I wanted to switch to Phoenix -
https://github.com/sdegutis/Phoenix/ which is from the same guy that this Hydra. I think the idea of Hydra was the rewrite it in Lua but I can't speak for him. Will definitely try it out asap!
As a heavy Ableton user and coder I would like to have a coding environment that also has powerful gui libraries so I can quickly implement faders and knobs and stuff when needed but also be able to change code on the fly. Kind of get the best of both worlds for the ultimate hacking music environment.
This is something similar and very interesting but for visual stuff based on openFrameworks:

As someone who's looking for an internship, could you briefly go over the skills you are looking for in an intern. I have a hard time judging myself and don't know exactly how much an intern should be capable of for a YC company or really any company with similar status/success. Obviously, it depends from company to company but still would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
Thanks

I have no particular background in programming languages design and theory but It's been an exciting topic the last few years since a lot of new languages have gained popularity and also most of the big companies seem to have one or two of them in their portfolio (no need to list them all really C#, Go, Swift etc).
I've been also on an exploration lately into the history of computer science...
I cannot be any happier that they did.
That. Was. Awesome. Totally Bret Victor type of stuff. I was just meaning to play with Light Table but as an iOS developer.. oh my god.
Thanks, I feel completely useless now. Wouldn't even know where to start with something like this.
London, Internship
Stack: Node.js/iOS Development
Resume: http://lnkd.in/bZ33xKK
Contact: nicknikolov at icloud dot com
Thanks, that's an interesting topic
Ah, your internship offer looks awesome! Applying this weekend, hopefully its still open.
Could you elaborate. I'm curious why interactive programming isn't more popular.

I just read his Wikipedia page and his early life. What's the point in even trying at life...
I wonder if it's a good idea to read SICP for the first time in a... let's say a language that people have mixed feelings about rather than the original version of the book. I guess nothing wrong with learning Scheme but as a JavaScripter this looks too good.
It's funny how nobody implied that.
That actually is a very simple approach but makes a lot of sense, I'll definitely think about it, thanks for writing it down.
I rarely hear devs saying they use much of what they studied, except some general programming techniques. I do think having a degree is awesome but I'm not sure who is actually wary of self-taught programmers.
Anyone know a good movie/book on his life?
Does anyone have a good read on generators? I have no idea what that is.

>That's why you don't see us caring about some new javascript framework or RoR or Azure, or any other "new" (and usually unproven) technology. We're too busy kicking ass and finding beauty in mature, established languages and frameworks that actually have all the features (and then some) of "newer" technologies.
Comments like these saying 'Oh you are a stupid hipster using node/ror whatever' are basically in the same spirit as 'Oh I'm cooler than you because I use this and that and you are using Java' just the other way round. Thanks for your childish negativity and adding to unneeded stereotypes in the tech community. If you are one of those 'wise' devs that use what is mature and stable and whatnot instead of chasing new trends you should be smart enough to preach that all technologies have their use case and people should use the best tool for the job etc etc… but hating is fun, isn't it.
What's your point? We should just not try out new things? It's not like HN is representative of the industry as a whole anyway. Platforms, languages, frameworks etc etc learn and copy from each other, imo people switching technologies are helping these processes.
If by an 'archaic contextual experience' you mean real world objects and by 'unnecessary tradition' - body movements, then I don't know what kind of future you want to live in.
