iTunes for Mac was also awful. I don’t know where the idea comes from that iTunes on Mac was good software but I remember reading that and getting a my first (then Intel) Mac and wondering why it got so much praise on Mac. It was the same software with slightly better UI but generally the same awful UX (except for drivers and performance which was never an issue on Win for me)
Can’t reply to jsondb, but iTunes had a default option to convert to AAC afaik.

That’s true in my experience, but Ramen in Japan is actually considerably better. The only good Ramen I ever had in Europe was in Düsseldorf but the owner imports pork from Japan.
Re:Homebridge 2.0 is here, and it speaks Matter on Monday May 04, 2026 @01:02PM (#48011482)
I love homebridge. Out of the 100 devices or so that I have in the HomeApp, only 2 or so are „native“ HomeKit devices. Will upgrade to HomeBridge 2 soon (but keep my old installation just to be safe =))

The T-Rex bit is not a joke, the line is said seriously. Also, watch Jurassic Park. Good movie.
Re:The Demoralization is just Beginning on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @07:18AM (#43265580)
It’s true for Germany. There recently was a case of a podcaster whose acquaintances were tapped and was apprehended while walking with his 1yo for posting memes. An AfD politician was fined 6000€ for posting crime statistics. A man had his house searched for sharing a meme of calling a politician something along the lines of „idiot“. There’s also the 60 minutes interview where prosecutors brag about confiscating devices for posting memes.

From what I hear from acquaintances and social media, the UK is even worse.

It makes as much sense as regulating nuclear weapons when you have none.

You can't target ancient compilers.
I have an account I exclusively use to follow users of a certain topic. I don’t really get political content, even when using the for you tab. That being said I’d love for there to be an option to ditch political content on my main account.
Re:Desktop Windowing on Android Tablets on Sunday September 22, 2024 @05:04PM (#41620064)
Imagine the iPad with an actual OS. Unfathomable.
I love the fat nano. I was said when its battery died. I love my iPhone Mini (besides iOS being a bit too dumbed down still). Apple should make more hardware for niches.
I’m increasingly bearish on Apple. I have the impression that they basically make toys for adult these days (no, not that kind of toys). My initial amazement for the Vision was immediately dampened by the fact that it was released by Apple and realizing they get to decide what I’m allowed to run on it (you know, like on a kids device). I’m sure their AI will follow the same pattern: locked down and neutered to the effect of being a gimmick.
Re:Could I use the iPad as my only computer? on Tuesday May 28, 2024 @03:42PM (#40504763)
I agree, but this is a new problem for Apple. The iPhone was famously introduced as a cannibalizing product.
Re:Could I use the iPad as my only computer? on Tuesday May 28, 2024 @03:37PM (#40504702)
My wife is on her third Surface because she can work on them. Meanwhile her iPad is used for YouTube and Netflix. The surface is a bad tablet but a great computer. I think the iPad has potential to be the tablet computer and it doesn’t need a dual boot into MacOS to achieve it, but the current app model with files as second class citizens, no real background processing and no child processes is just too restrictive for most professional workflows. In the end most apps need to export their result to a real computer, which means the iPad is not a real computer.
Re:Could I use the iPad as my only computer? on Tuesday May 28, 2024 @11:35AM (#40501760)
The iPad is the „you’re holding it wrong“ philosophy applied to the whole OS. The problem is Apple is unable to make tradeoffs, which is exemplified by the lack of a calculator app because „you can’t just take the iPhone calculator and resize it for the iPad“ (yes you can and it’s better than not having a calculator so at all).
I wonder how much return to work (as opposed to working from home) contributes to this.
Visual novels are like choose your own adventure books with pictures. Are those books games? Is it useful to classify them as such?
Re:A first look at Europe's alternative iPhone app stores on Friday April 05, 2024 @03:33AM (#39939631)
The one week limitation is so mind bogglingly stupid, it’s something only Apple could come up with.
As soon as you can stimulate tactile impressions it's over. You can put on your VR Headset and be in a completely different world. Eventually the interface for eyes and ears will improve, but tactility would be a huge step towards being in a completely virtual world.
From personal experience, logic skills are significantly impaired, but when I’m stuck on a problem and high I can think of „out of the box“ solutions more easily that I later implement.
You can make the same mistakes you warn others about actually (and the App Store is not the only offender in this regard).
There's a clip where Steve Jobs talks about how Xerox became run by salesman. The current Apple is not quite there yet, but it's very slowly heading in that direction.

Re:It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU on Saturday February 17, 2024 @10:13AM (#39410131)
You can’t compile on it. You can’t run software in the background (for example a terminal, where you don’t have to bring the app to the foreground every few minutes). You can’t install software on it that Apple doesn’t want you to (regardless of whether or not they’re malicious). And the software you can run is more likely than not a subscription, because the only place you can buy it is the App Store, which pushes the subscription model unto users and devs.
Yeah, see also the iPad such a powerful, well engineered device, held back by what I can do with it.

Yes, but it’s extremely unstable. You’ll never copy all photos in one go.
Re:How iTunes Is Changing on PC on Thursday February 08, 2024 @08:43AM (#39301802)
Thanks, I hate it. I tried to transfer some audiobooks I have using iTunes and it didn't work. The music app is buggy as hell. I'm not sure if Apple wants me to buy a Mac or switch to Android but I'll probably go with the latter.
