Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:30PM (#50330610)
This echoes SICP's admonition that "Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute."

Which is absurd on it's face for most day to day programmers, but a critical distinction for theoretical computer scientists.

Was that friend Justin Hall of Wired?

There was a story about Jon Postel (pre-ICANN) and fuck.com, this might be it:

The passage where Tom goes to whitewash the fence is brilliant.

Relatable to any kids forced to do chores.

And ... you made Lobster lang, Cube2/Sauerbraten 3d shooter and voxray/voxile and lots of other cool things.

You're reading too much into this, I think. Bad kids do exist. Be compassionate, but do not encourage involvement with them.

I have really really profound regrets about not doing this myself, with my kids.

maybe just drop them rather than reject with tcp reset
You can buy a Google Coral TPU, does that count?
> Tyler Shultz went to work at Theranos right out of Stanford and soon noticed that things weren't as they seemed. Lots of other employees knew there was something fishy going on, but Tyler was one of a tiny handful able to resist the mesmerizing and intimidating Elizabeth Holmes and speak out about the fraud that was putting patients at risk.

Yes, I admire the restraint required to not put "unlucky" in quotes.
Mouse movement doesn't seem to work with Chrome on Mac.

Looks good though!

Re:No Man Is an Island on Friday October 09, 2026 @08:57PM (#50028397)
I'm also reminded if "I am a rock" by Simon and Garfunkel. Last two stanzas:

    I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
    And an island never cries

It was sophons.

Love this comment, it's simultaneously very nerdy and very non-nerdy at the same time. Well done!

Reminiscent of Frank Zappa's album "Ship_Arriving_Too_Late_to_Save_a_Drowning_Witch"

old cp didn't have `-a`

Anyway, just use rsync.

Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @10:12PM (#49903557)
... how did you both misspell the title? It's the Count of Monte Cristo .. unless this is a different language.
There's a hint of rottenness to the scent -- even vomit to some. Maybe like Durian.
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @10:25PM (#49872855)
It's weird but I always some context in so I don't see these.

i.e. I would have searched for dario quote .... or dario basketball quote ....

Re:The mystery animal on an ancient god's head on Thursday September 24, 2026 @03:25AM (#49827391)
Borzoi?

Aardvark to me. Similar snout, long ears. They were probably in the southern reaches of Egypt.

With regard to differences that could be explained by stylisation and the lack of familiarity due to it's rarity in most of Egypt.

Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:07PM (#49790098)
Pretty sure they don't.

And surely the DMV has far greater 'vicarious liability', as they're the ones that issue licenses.

Top loaders are higher capacity and cost less. And open air drying is preferable to machine drying.
Re:Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:45PM (#49789708)
That's a problem. That the Guardian doesn't mention the regulation and doesn't give us the wording of the advertisement.
Re:What Sun got wrong on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:29PM (#49789470)
Exactly, I used desktop Sun machines and administered many very large Sun machines from 1997 through to 2010.

I saw the end coming for Sun when I had a dx2/66 at home running Linux in the late 90s. It was brilliant.

Re:Winning the Visa Lottery on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:36AM (#49783410)
AEA leans strongly left. I wouldn't put much store in this.
