I had no idea this was a movie, I had just read the book when younger and enjoyed it. Looking it up now, it seems the book was a novelization of the movie - I'll have to give it a watch. I wonder if your and your team's work also laid the path for Advent Children, which I enjoyed as a young FFVII fan.

I agree - and that makes me wish that the messaging was more clear from passkey supporters. Some may be genuinely confused and talking about one or the other mode (or not even realize that multiple modes exist), and some may be trying to claim the benefits of one mode while/or handwaving away the tradeoffs of the other mode.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:17PM (#50090100)
Some context I think is missing: TFA's author claims to use passkeys for 2FA (and so, not as a password replacement as I think is often implicitly assumed in discussion):

> This one can be tricky because I've seen many sites using passkeys to replace passwords, but that's not something we've done on Report URI, passkeys are used as a 2FA mechanism.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:08PM (#50089910)
Exactly. So much for TFA's "or whatever other software of your choosing" claim.

Passkeys are a trap, trying to lock users in to the service providers.

I did say I like and use 1Password, but I do remember that they switched from a one-time payment model to a subscription model, and have now stopped supporting the old software and only support their subscription software. If it wasn't for my non-tech-savvy, aging family I support their usage of 1Password for, I would still be on Keepass[XC] for my own private usage.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:04PM (#50089840)
TFA's author has also explicitly precluded the "platform-authenticates-you-to-website automatically" workflow, in a separate blog post [0]:

I'm a happy user of 1Password myself, but warning that they only allow export of passkeys through a specific protocol, and it has to be done on the mobile app. [0]

Re:Show HN: Opensidian on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:17PM (#50079697)
Exactly this. I've tried hacking together a syncing solution on both Android and iOS, from Syncthing, to Git via Termux (Android) or Working Copy (iOS). I didn't try NextCloud or Dropbox etc, but that Obsidian Just Works(tm) as smoothly as Apple Notes (but is available as a full-featured desktop app in Linux -- I know Apple Notes has a - slightly janky - web interface)... I was happy to pay for the sync and stop worrying about checking on my sync status or remembering to push my commits.

Plus the hotbar on mobile makes it easy to do bullets/checkboxes, as easy as typing on my computer keyboard.

Re:We're working on a new RuneScape MMO on Sunday October 04, 2026 @02:32PM (#49956530)
For those like OP and me who don’t want to grind but want a little bit of the RuneScape-themed “number go up”, there’s Melvor Idle - originally RuneScape-inspired and I believe Jagex bought it eventually. I like to have it idling on the other monitor when I’m doing mindless admin on the pc, or will check it on my phone a couple times a day

Awesome, nix + home-manager or system-manager might be the solution I'm looking for, thank you!
Re:Upgrade your desktop: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS is now available on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:33AM (#49910333)
I installed Kubuntu on a laptop for work, since I use KDE at home. It was slightly annoying to have to re-configure stuff like the DE settings, Dolphin etc though.

Anyone have suggestions for syncing/version controlling KDE Plasma 6 configurations?

(I made an Ask HN for it as well: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49910250)

Ask HN: How do you sync or migrate KDE settings?

Inspired by today's post on Ubuntu: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49908757I use KDE at home, and installed (K)ubuntu on a separate laptop to use for work stuff (Yocto). It's a bit tedious to have to go into system settings and click through menus to configure e.g. middle-click settings, alt-tab settings, sleep/wake/lock behavior, Dolphin toolbar/views, etc, every time I set up a...

Re:Ask HN: Diablo 4 on Ubuntu? on Sunday September 20, 2026 @09:39PM (#49782082)
tl;dr: go to protondb.com, search for Diablo 4, and then filter the list of results by "Distro" for Ubuntu (and Mint), and try the options that people say worked for them

ProtonDB is a site that aggregates reports from users of Proton, the compatibility layer to let Windows games run on Linux. For lots of games, users will submit reports of their system info (distro, CPU, GPU, driver version, Proton version) and any configuration they needed to do to get that game working on their setup. The usual solutions are switching the Proton version you use and/or commands you add to the custom commands in the configuration for that particular game in the Steam menu.

I just looked at Diablo 4, and specifically filtered for Ubuntu users; I see 22 reports, with the most recent ones being people saying it worked for them. There are also successful reports from people on Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu.

re: the sociodynamic portion

Karen Horney (20th-century German psychoanalyst) in her book "Neurosis and Human Growth" talks quite a bit about this failure mode. The relevant bit I want to share is her talking about how a person may be in a state of neurosis due to not feeling like they are living up to their idealized self -- and that a commonly destructive response to that neurosis is trying to force everyone around them to treat and perceive them as if they were that idealized self and not the flawed real self they are (regardless of whether the people around believe or are deceived into believing that, which is where she diverges from your point a bit but I think you're touching on very similar things).

Redwall mentioned!

Brian Jacques' other series Castaways of the Flying Dutchman is also very good.

Yes, this. I've found good prices on used electronics on Facebook marketplace, as well as eBay, Swappa ("Craigslist for used electronics", cheaper than Backmarket but no QA, is just for coordinating private sales person-to-person), Backmarket (slightly more expensive than Swappa, but has in-house QA and is backed by their business), and Unclaimed Baggage.
I love doing this, it feels nice to think that I am playing a small part in helping to reduce the propagating wave for people behind me :)

Until the inevitable jerk takes the 1-car length space in front me as an invite to try to find a faster lane, making me hit the brakes and strengthening the traffic wave instead of weakening it :(

I switched to Linux for everything but AAA FPS PVP games last year and have had a great experience so far.

Steam+Proton makes everything I play just work: Helldivers 2, Slay the Spire 2, No Rest For The Wicked, FF7 Remake, Stardew, modded Lethal Company (using r2modman) are the main things I've been playing recently, and all worked out of the box with Proton.

My PS5 controller may have needed me to install one package or something but has been working flawlessly after that.

I keep a Windows drive around for stuff like Apex Legends, Battlefield 6, but I pretty much never boot into Windows anymore except for those.

(I probably sound like a shill at this point, having commented something like this on multiple Linux threads now, but I continue to be impressed at how well Linux performs for gaming these days!)

Re:The Quiet Resurgence of RF Engineering on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @10:41AM (#47935320)
Idk, I'd like to see AI design a schematic and lay out a board. Even the occasional "Show HN" that combines AI+PCB stuff is about analysis and checks. It doesn't seem like anybody is even near any kind of ECAD using AI. People still complain about autorouters. Even frontier models need architecting and guard rails in software to avoid spaghetti, it seems like an even harder problem to get them to choose the correct parts, create accurate footprints and symbols, and wire those all up together.

"This is wrong, fix it" + recompile, can happen twenty times in ten minutes, but "we discovered the layout is wrong, fix it" is precluded by the cost and time of a new board spin.

AI + text (code) seems like a good match but (E)CAD seems a lot harder to interface AI with. If I'm wrong, I'd like to share that with the EEs on my team, though.

I didn’t know about hosted-MCU! I just started using the ESP-AT firmware for an ESP acting as a radio co-processor on a project at work - do you know how hosted-MCU differs?

I did glance at the readme and get the impression that hosted-MCU works for all compatible ESPs and seems more flexible and powerful, where ESP-AT is for select ESP chips and is more limited.

I keep saying this under a bunch of Linux-adjacent posts, but I switched to EndeavourOS late last year and have been enjoying it ever since.

I do 99% of my computing needs on it, with the last 1% being a second Windows SDD I only boot into to play games that require heavy anticheat (Apex Legends, Battlefield 6, Rainbow Six Siege).

Otherwise, I've been doing everything else in Linux, including all the rest of my gaming (Baldur's Gate 3, Helldivers 2, No Rest For The Wicked, Slay The Spire 2, Stardew Valley, pretty much anything that's not AAA FPS multiplayer that I've wanted to play so far, even modding games like Lethal Company using r2modman).

It's been great - I told my coworker I only realized how annoying the Windows auto-update and forced reboots were after I got used to my Linux PC always being in the state I left it.

NYC playgrounds closed until July 2020 (a time concurrent with ongoing protests): https://data.cityofnewyork.us/dataset/Parks-Closure-Status-D...

Washington state continues to close park/trail facilities through July 2021: https://www.wta.org/go-outside/social-distancing-hiking-in-t...

I agree with you that some protocols were dumb. Schools should have opened windows, or added UV-C lights, or replaced high-traffic surfaces like doorknobs in large common areas with antiviral materiel, added foot-use mechanisms for opening doors, and so on. Or, if it was too expensive for any of that, asked cleaning staff to spend more time on high-transmission areas like bathroom faucets and doorknobs even if it meant less time elsewhere. But I think there's something more than just outdoor vs indoor going on.

Re:If America's So Rich, How'd It Get So Sad? on Thursday April 23, 2026 @05:39PM (#47882441)
LA County Parks is implementing following changes effective November 30, 2020:

All playgrounds will be closed. Fitness zones and exercise equipment will be closed. Parks and trails remain open for outdoor, passive use for individuals or members of the same household. Masks and physical distancing are required. No group gatherings are permitted

https://covid19.lacounty.gov/covid19-2-2/closures/

Emphasis mine

Edit: and for reference, because I do think you have a point, the George Floyd protests started months before November 2020.

So why were public outdoor areas like skate parks filled with sand to “promote social distancing”?[1] Or parking lots at beaches and state parks closed “to curb the spread of coronavirus”?[2]

I did consider Fedora, just was intrigued by EndeavourOS, being Arch-based but with default settings that work totally fine for a casual like me, not having to fuss about setting up a DE or WM+addons, firewall, WiFi, Nvidia GPU worked out of the box, etc
Yep, my casual Steam games run well out of the box. I don’t even use a gaming-focused distro like Bazzite, just EndeavourOS. Helldivers 2, No Rest For The Wicked, Slay The Spire 2, even modded Lethal Company with friends using r2modman (also worked OOTB). And of course Discord works, including streaming when friends want to watch

If I really want to play Apex or Battlefield I’ll fire up my dual drive dual boot Windows, and in the meantime, no more Microsoft spying on me, forced Windows updates and reboots at random times, ads in my Start menu, Xbox apps and other bloatware, etc

Re:What Does It Mean to "Write Like You Talk"? on Thursday April 09, 2026 @01:10AM (#47699497)
Tangentially, this post has stuck with me for years: "How Real Life is Different from Fiction part 2" https://mengwong.livejournal.com/7227.html

As a kid who was a voracious reader, also called a geek by myself (cringily lol) and by others, some quotes that resonated then and still do now:

> Geek kids read many more words than they speak. As a result, when geek kids do talk, they talk like a book.

> They use fully formed sentences, complete with subordinate clauses; if you listen hard, you can almost hear semicolons and parentheses.

> Many geeks, though, speak with "-v" turned on

> In fact, many geeks are so offended by the very idea of telling others what to do that they spend all their lives in the declarative voice, and never use the imperative voice at all. These are the geeks who recoil from moving into management.

I'd recommend Katherine Dee's Substack, Default Friend, for a more in-depth look at this type of thing. The NYT op-ed dips into the usual tropes of the attention economy, true crime, copycat behavior, viral memes and social media algorithms, calls to safeguard the algorithms and AI.

Dee's article "The Nihilism of the Mass Shooter" (written in 2022, even) (https://default.blog/p/the-nihilism-of-the-mass-shooter) provides more specifics than the generalities in this op-ed. I'm a regular reader, so it's easy for me to see, but I believe that her passion about investigating and reporting on these things is visible even to a new reader. It's clear to me that she actually spends time looking at the sources, e.g. there's a link in the article to one of her sources, a pdf of the law enforcement report on a shooter from Parkland.
