News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Yep, thank you simsla.

My specific examples aren't listed, but the guidelines on what to submit support my point I think:

> If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Yup, I specifically only linked working sites, since not all I checked were online anymore.
True, but imo there's also nothing particulrarly special about telling your agent to (re)build something that already existed (in various flavours) before.

I packed the thought into "consider if your vision is really distinct enough": make it better, make it weird, or make it recreationally (i.e. by hand). Make it opinionated, in Minecraft, whatever, but give it at least some new substance.

It's also fine to do Hacker Tube or Hacker Times (it's really not about this specific instance) for the 100th time, but if nothing else distinguishes it from the others than "I wanted to have one too", maybe it's not the curiosity-inspiring thing to share on HN we should strive for.

No shame in doing something that already exists for yourself. But at this point I think it wouldn't be asked too much to just ask your favorite agent to check first if someone already implemented your idea in the past and then consider if your vision is really distinct enough to warrant anther instance of whatever you want to build.
Hold my hacker beer...
I remember there was a similar project like this posted a while ago. Turns out there are multiple. Here are just a few (that are still online):

A couple of months ago (so probably vibe-coded too):

I guess AI will be very competitive in all research fields, but your example is actually interesting: they do not have a magic hotpot, right? So are they competing in the food industry? Or how quickly will they be able to compete with Amazon in logistics?

So I think they can compete in many industries (and I don't like it), but not all of them for sure. They can only compete in all industries with infinite money, and I don't think it would be good for most people.

I mean the hype cycles usually don't last that long anymore these days? It will get old by Friday.
Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:47PM (#50331161)
If you think it's more fun that way, sure. Sometimes (often?) satisfaction is about friction.

And I've seen the /s, but your comment seems to mock OP's point more than just trying to be funny.

Why learn anything if AI can do it for you?
Re:One Must Fall 2097 Remastered on Saturday October 24, 2026 @10:25AM (#50221535)
Arrow keys + Enter for punch and Right Shift for kick worked for me. Haven't tried special moves or anything but seems fun. Bookmarked for later.

Re:Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:32PM (#50121576)
And in other regions the desire to migrate to the US went down a lot more than in Europe. So this is not about what Europeans think about the US at all.

Although recent US international politics did stain the US image in Europe substantually. Just the most recent betrayal against Ukraine is a good example of why.

I think to implicitly trigger the valueOf function.
Re:Muse Spark Open on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:48AM (#50115851)
Both your examples take human authored input and transform them in a pretty direct way.

I addressed this by saying if the training data counts as the human input, then the creative authorship of the weights are all the creatives that involuntarily supplied the training data -- not the labs training the models.

Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @08:45PM (#50112277)
Aren't model weights the output of human (?) authored software? The training software might have received creative input, but not the weights themselves. And if the training data itself counts, then the copyright would not be the labs, who stole the training data, but all the creatives who's works were used.
Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:21AM (#50084183)
That would be very neat of course. Out of reach for me since I use 3rd-party keyboards that don't provide that.
Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:15AM (#50082678)
I'm on Android, but tbh I'm quite happy with Thunderbird mobile. It's not fancy, but generally works well. Though I'm not an email junkie on mobile, mostly use it to check some info like MFA code, magic link etc.
Re:Crest – an Arc-inspired open-source browser for Mac on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:29AM (#50067586)
Thanks for sharing. I guess I (can) have all this in plain Firefox too. Only using vertical tabs right now, but for a while I heavily used the tab groups extension, which worked similar to workspaces I guess. The only thing I think I can't do is the "Little Arc", which does seem handy.
Re:Strengthening our defenses against distillation attacks on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:38PM (#50066328)
Hey Anthropic? Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

I'm angry and laughing at the same time. The audacity! The biggest theft of IP in history, and then the "attacker" whines the same thing happens to them?

To be fair and balanced: • Anthropic payed up (a little) for their theft. • They pretend to be concerned about cyber and national security at least.

There needs to be a coherent position on knowledge and intellectual property: either it's free to take and share, then no one can complain. Or one can "own" an idea, then the AI companies first need to pay up for real (how is Sony doing it?). They can license (subscribe!) all the works used for training and after that they can bitch around about distillation "attacks".

Re:Crest – an Arc-inspired open-source browser for Mac on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:31AM (#50053227)
I don't get the appeal of the Arc-esque browsers. They look very clean in screenshots, but I tried both Arc and Zen and never got to feel productive with them. Can someone enlighten me?
Re:Lobbying on Saturday October 10, 2026 @03:50AM (#50030697)
But isn't "explicitly allowing payments" just legal bribery? At one point you can't call it lobbying anymore.
Re:If AI is conscient, then we are making slaves on Saturday October 10, 2026 @02:02AM (#50030070)
Meeseeks aren't happy to exist. They're happy to help you with a simple task and suffer if they exist from prolonged amount of time. Literally the point of the episode.
Re:Lobbying on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:11AM (#50029764)
Lobbying is hardly uniquely (US) american, right? At least in Europe, we have our fair share and I'm sure it exists in Africa and Asia as well.
Demo seems to be down (503). A screenshot in the readme (or animated gif) goes a long way for anything that includes a UI.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:48AM (#49905293)
I second that. The 3 body problem is also great!
Re:PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock on Saturday September 26, 2026 @04:10PM (#49860096)
Grayjay I'd say. Also works great on Android.
Re:Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:56AM (#49828885)
Not really. Similar to giving drugs to lower class people so they can bear the unbearable life. For an indiviual, sure, life probably feels better in a narrow sense, but is it more ethical? No.
Re:Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:52AM (#49828848)
I guess it depens on the preson. The author claims they haven't eaten meat since 2007.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:47AM (#49828372)
The demo (from minute 29) is really cool.
