Re:Flash Player 'Molehill' on mobile devices on Friday May 06, 2011 @07:38AM (#2520645)
i think it's taking advantage of opengl. so all devices that support opengl get accelerated graphics. no need for per-device optimisations.
Re:Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN? on Sunday April 03, 2011 @07:52PM (#2404588)
Stop trying to rely on the hive to vote good stories to the top. Either the democratic approach doesn't work or HN is getting gamed - either way the site is now effectively broken.

A decision has to be made from the top about what HN is all about. If it's startups and business then that's the only type of story allowed. Everything else gets dumped. I don't need another Reddit.

Mods would need strict guidelines about what qualifies and everything even slightly outside of these guidelines gets turfed.

oh and get rid of karma. It's bs. Encourages hivemind like nothing else.

Re:Nissan Leaf on Friday February 18, 2011 @01:11AM (#2234453)
svg. doc is similar to html (nodes in a tree structure) and it can be scripted(js). Animation scripted by hand or using an external lib like jq.

Re:JQuery Mobile Alpha 3 Released on Saturday February 05, 2011 @02:06AM (#2182646)
Thanks for the clarification Todd - this makes perfect sense.

I think what confuses the issue for many people, myself included, is that other frameworks(Sencha) are trying to recreate a pixel perfect iOS/Andriod UI/experience in HTML.

Re:JQuery Mobile Alpha 3 Released on Friday February 04, 2011 @04:51AM (#2178934)
Performance of these types frameworks on anything other than the beefiest mobile hardware is woeful.

I get your point though... 1 click deployment to multiple devices is a great feature.

Re:JQuery Mobile Alpha 3 Released on Friday February 04, 2011 @02:01AM (#2178659)
Great work, however it's far short of the quality of Sencha Touch.

I have to wonder what the point of mimicking native UI is.

I've just started learning Obj-C and iPhone dev and getting ones head around basic UI functionality is at most 2-3 days worth of playing around. Is is really worth sacrificing native performance and consistency for such marginal gain?

Re:Piwik hits 1.0 - Open source web analytics on Tuesday August 31, 2010 @09:09AM (#1649229)
An amazing product that I've been following for the last year has reached the 1.0 milestone.

I don't use GA so can't comment on feature parity. Importantly (for me) it has a powerful API, plugin architecture, easy integration, dead easy multi-site configuration.

I can't speak highly enough of this product.

Re:Web based Vector editing on Thursday August 26, 2010 @10:08AM (#1635936)
wow! great find.

I wrote my own svg image editor, but this is really slick - and the code is a lot cleaner than mine :)

One of the contributors also wrote canvg: http://code.google.com/p/canvg/

which implements the svg spec in canvas allowing SVG->Canvas->JPG/PNG

Re:Jump back in time with HTML5 on Wednesday June 23, 2010 @09:05PM (#1456990)
sure it can be done as long as you are using Chromium nightlies along with the --enable-webgl switch.

Now when can I use it with assurance that I can target every browser and the 90%+ of my visitors will be able to see it?

I love web standards, I want them to win, but we're just at the start of this race and web standards have a loooong way to go.

Re:Jump back in time with HTML5 on Wednesday June 23, 2010 @09:00PM (#1456984)
Nobody's arguing that you should ditch Flash today, but the use cases for it will diminish over time.

Right now if you want cross browser 3D, video or animation then Flash is the way to go. But in 10 years time when all major browsers have consistent implementations of <video>, canvas, <audio>, webGL etc, etc then, sure use an alternative ;)

I love web standards but they move at glacial speeds, and user adoption is even slower.

Re:Ext JS + jQTouch + Raphaël = Sencha on Tuesday June 15, 2010 @08:44AM (#1432540)
care to elaborate?

I've been developing with it for a couple of years and am quite happy with performance. Of course its going to be sluggish if you're targeting ie6 or something since the DOM the framework creates is HUGE.

Would be nice if they ditched support for ie6 which would probably help a lot with DOM bloat.

Re:Please review my startup on Friday June 11, 2010 @12:26AM (#1422788)
Seems like a reasonable idea. $19/month is very high for what the product does though. Any comparison to what your competitors are charging? Seems like more of a $5/month type idea.

'...I strongly prefer an existing market to creating one from scratch'

'In short, the first mover advantage is a crock of shit'

So many people are scratching their heads trying to invent something new. Don't. Pick a market - the bigger the better and out-execute in some key area, be that design, usability, marketing etc.

can anyone shed some light on why some people are reporting aliased text (even with clear type)?

I'm looking at them on XP and they look stunning in all browsers.

It's not a bulletproof system. I tried looking at the sample page at work where we have a restrictive proxy filter and it was a no-go.

or did she make a brilliant move by choosing an un-torrentable name?

PayPal subscription without PP account

Don't know if this is old news or not, but thought i'd share anyway - might be of interest to other HN SaaS people.PayPal subscriptions used to require that your customers have a PayPal account - this was a show stopper for me.Just noticed that they have a product called 'Enhanced Recurring Payments' which allows subscriptions without the PP account.About as easy as recurring billing can...
