Re:Darkbloom – Private inference on idle Macs on Thursday April 16, 2026 @04:59PM (#47799435)
I received the same error, but it was followed by this line in the logs, which might explain the lack of inference requests assume there is actual demand...

I love how 'Music 80s' is channel 29, which was MTV on cable when I was growing up in the tri-state area in the 80s ;)

The single username and password fields usually allow the site to determine whether some sort of federated login is in place for your domain.

Re:I forgot about print style sheets (2016) on Tuesday April 27, 2021 @01:27PM (#26958908)
Browser consistency for print styles is like building websites in the late 90s. Chrome, Firefox, Safari all handle margins, page breaks differently. Not to mention setting page/paper size...

If anyone enjoys this topic, I would recommend reading "A Thread Across the Ocean: The Heroic Story of the Transatlantic Cable" by John Steele Gordon.
GPUs are highly specialized CPUs, especially good at some types of number crunching. In analytics workloads, they are used to run queries that can benefit from that specialization. This is not for your typical GPU graphics based use (games/graphics). Has nothing to do with what you see on the screen/frame rate.

The original Urchin was used for log analysis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urchin_(software). Which might explain a 'self-hosted' version of the software as well.

Re:Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android on Monday May 20, 2019 @07:01PM (#19966122)
If you are on a Mac, try changing your color profile in System Preferences | Displays | Color to something like 'Adobe RGB' or 'Display P3'. That allowed me to see the logo, as for a difference in the photos in the original post, not so much...
Re:New iPad Air and iPad Mini on Monday March 18, 2019 @03:24PM (#19424275)
Slightly off topic: I'd really love to see a new iPod, one that isn't a slimmed down iPhone.

I run a lot and miss the iPod Nano (7th Generation). It was a really good single purpose device. It worked perfectly and was super light.

I realize the replacement is the Apple Watch. But the Apple Watch still doesn't replace my Garmin from a running perspective.

Plus, I haven't found a pair of Bluetooth headphones that work as well or reliably as a pair of $15 Sony ear buds.

@derekdahmer

Try Indicative https://www.indicative.com. (I’m the CEO) Our platform is a customer analytics platform, similar to the ones mentioned, but has a one-click integration for Snowplow based data warehouses. It is designed for product and marketing teams, to easily perform customer behavioral analysis without the direct need for data teams or coding skills.

It looks as if in the next several months Firefox will become all but invisible from most 3rd party trackers as Firefox ”will strip cookies and block storage access from third-party tracking content, based on lists of tracking domains by Disconnect.” [1]

The full list of trackers that will be blocked by default is substantial. [2]

:) thanks.
Re:Segment Is Now Free for Early-Stage Startups on Thursday February 21, 2019 @06:46PM (#19221772)
Data volume-based pricing is a bit out of control across most analytics/data products. My company has been moving away from volume-based pricing to a feature/value-based model.

The big challenge is aligning data scale to company size/price.

I suspect Segment is trying to solve for this very problem with their price increases but at the expense of smaller business. The 'startup' program is a great way for them to keep the platform accessible to new businesses. I applaud them for that.

--

Shameless plug: My company Indicative (https://www.indicative.com), a customer/behavioral analytics platform that integrates with Segment. We offer 1 billion events/user actions a month for free for Segment users, so that all companies, especially startups can start using data in bringing their products to market and without having to worry about data limits.

Re:Integrating Public Transportation into the Uber App on Thursday January 31, 2019 @01:38PM (#19047416)
Sometimes I don't investigate the public transportation options while I'm traveling. This seems like a smart move but curious what Uber actually gets out of this, your 'transportation hub', municipal goodwill?
Experian keeps asking me to pay for this feature. Where did you find it?
Is that normal?
Re:Hacking Voting Machines at Defcon on Monday July 31, 2017 @09:36AM (#14891793)
There is an excellent podcast series on the subject of electronic voting, where several experts give their opinions.

https://www.predictingourfuture.com/online-voting/

After listening, I became convinced that electronic/internet voting is a terrible idea.
