Finally somebody other than me who is aware of Summoning. They are awesome. "The Passing of the Grey Company", "Land of the Dead", "Mirdautas Vras", "Nightshade Forests" and "Kor" all evoke specific scenes from the books for me.
Re:To learn a new language, read its standard library on Monday October 25, 2021 @01:40AM (#28984764)
What's the difference between a real publisher and a publishing mill ?

How would you categorize No Starch Press, Manning, OReilly as per this rubric ?

I couldn't have stated these things better.
> Here is some Youtube channels that are very solid on approaching weightlifting grounded in real practice and science: Jeff Nippard, mountaindog1 (John Meadows), Greg Doucette, VitruvianPhysique and Renaissance Periodization.

I'd add Mark Rippetoe (Starting Strength on Youtube) and Alan Thrall to that list.

Is it just me or is anybody else also reminded of "The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral mind" while reading this ?

I have a hunch that ancient peoples could not conceive of a state of clinical depression. That comes along with the modern emphasis on "me" and "my goals" and "my desires"

As Soren Kierkegaard put it "Anxiety is the price of freedom"

Re:Writing a book: is it worth it? on Wednesday September 30, 2020 @05:11AM (#24636864)
I am one of the benfactors of your book. I heavily relied on it while trying to parallelize an ancient geophysical inversion code.

Didn't think i'd actually be responding to an author whose book I have spent multiple hours with.

Thanks for the great book!

Re:Nototo – Build a unified mental map of notes on Sunday January 19, 2020 @04:39AM (#22090433)

Re:Electron 7.0 on Thursday October 24, 2019 @01:39PM (#21347066)
Wait ... let me see if I can anticipate the top comment

"Electron consumes so many resources ... Why so resource hungry ... My workstation already runs Chrome, can't have electron apps bogging it down ... Slack runs on Electron ... VSCode is the only good Electron app ... Why are we doing this ... Dennis Ritchie would be turning in his grave"

This topic could honestly trigger the "parse regex with html" kind of reply.

Re:NordVPN confirms it was hacked on Monday October 21, 2019 @01:06PM (#21314635)
I remember last week's episode on Darknet Diaries where NordVPN was offering 3y plans for a hefty discount. My first reaction was "Are they going out of business ?"

This week's news lets me make sense of that ad.

"Life ... ummm, finds a way"

A moment to process the fact that the song has suddenly started playing sloooowly too :)

Why man ? Is this machine your daily driver or just for HNing ?

But there are a lot more adults than there are babies.
Re:Haskell for Mac IDE on Tuesday November 21, 2017 @07:31AM (#15747434)
Why don't you want to upgrade beyond Yosemite ? I just bought a new Macbook Air and its been nagging me to update.
Re:Why Ageism Never Gets Old on Thursday November 16, 2017 @09:08AM (#15712678)
Could it be because older people are also going to be much more unwilling to try something new ? Noophilia seems to be a feature of youth.
Don't know why you're being downvoted. Seems like a nice point to debate about.
Re:Android Oreo on Tuesday August 22, 2017 @03:23AM (#15070370)
Doing yearly releases is such an obviously great idea that there must be a big reason why they are NOT doing it.

You roast your own beans at home ? How expensive of a setup does that require ?

Re:A Startup Making Paper Out of Stone, Not Trees on Friday June 16, 2017 @07:55AM (#14568149)
I've always wondered the same about iron ore, granite, marble etc.

I'm sorry if I come across as stupid. I don't see the connection between these two assertions.

IIRC the whole "Gandhi is gonna nuke the rest of the world" meme came from such a bug occuring in the world-domination strategy game Civilization 2.
AFB ?
Is the link between risky behaviour and a toxoplasmosis infection that well established ?
NHST ? What's that ?

I found the same thing. The discipline of boiling things down into their essentials really forced me to pay attention and really thinking about the reading material.

I'm surprised you mention swimming has changed your life. I was always suspicious of the way I had begun thinking of my life in terms of "Before Swimming" and "After Swimming" phases.

Has this been your experience too ? I used to bike an hour a day earlier, but swimming has done something else to my well-being and productivity.

Look at the Old Testament for descriptions of too many genocides. . If graded on a curve, the 20th century comes out as a pretty nonviolent genocide-free century.
