I'm using an extension for that: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/middle-button-scrol...

There used to be a more popular one, but it got dumped by Chrome recently, guess it wasn't up-to-date.

This one isn't perfect (eg sometimes it pastes clipboard on middle-click), but still it mostly works.

Answered via contact form on your website.
Upwork might be a good place for you.

> Requirements would need to be well scoped to make this feasible I would imagine

This depends on the client.

And JFYI - while there definitely are good clients on Upwork, you'd have to sieve through a lot of garbage posts, so you'll have to spend quite some time finding the good ones.

I also heard people saying that local US marketplaces (even Craigslist) might bring a higher hourly rate. Can't vouch for it, though. On Upwork, there's a lot of work at $30-35 per hour - you can set higher rate for yourself, but that would naturally mean less clients reaching out to you.

I've been working with it for 9.5 years now, you're welcome to ask if you have questions.

Good luck!

Strong tradition of STEM education, back from the Soviet times. Military complex was very strong in the USSR, which resulted in quality education (again, just STEM, not so in humanities) - basically, you need to know physics and maths very well to build the bomb.

I guess that applies to other Eastern bloc countries to some extent (see Polish universities at ##5, 9 and 25, Ukraine at #11, Belarus at #17).

Try BountySource [1] maybe?

There you can post a proposal for some improvement to an OSS project (a design doc, in your case) and pledge a bounty for it.

If other people have the same problem, they might chip in further, making it more visible/profitable to solve.

Longbets? [1]

(They don't seem to be very active though, so if anyone knows better alternatives, you're welcome to share)

"Orgmode for Sublime Text 2 and 3" (didn't try it myself though)

Link on Gmane:

Seconding draw.io, have been using it somewhat actively recently, do recommend.

Seamless integration with GDrive, lots of existing templates, great experience overall.

Try asking at Datasets subreddit:

That's exactly what BountySource is about.

Then, as mention downthread, there are Flattr, Gittip/Gratipay and Patreon.

Re:Ask HN: How do I earn money? on Sunday October 25, 2015 @09:18PM (#10449164)
Remote jobs - Upwork (formerly oDesk, with Elance joining it shortly).

If you have some portfolio, you can try monthly "Who's hiring/Who wants to be hired/Seeking freelancer" threads here on HN, the next would be in just a few days:

https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=whoishiring

You've got pretty impressive range of skills, and at least PHP/frontend are very remote-friendly, with enough demand on the resources I added above.

Since you're familiar with C++ and competitive programming, you might also try things like TopCoder/CodeEval; it's more about competition, but the corporate sponsors are watching competitors and might hire the best.

My email is in my profile, feel free to get in touch if you have more questions. Best of luck!

Re:UN delay could open door to robot wars on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @02:01PM (#10347718)
Yes, this one exactly - thanks!
Re:UN delay could open door to robot wars on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @12:51PM (#10347127)
This was the premise of some sci-fi novel I read long ago: two countries at war switched to using robots, and as robo-armies became more interconnected and thus more intellectually powerful, they understood the pointlessness of destruction and refused to fight. IIRC they went to pick flowers on the battlefield instead of singing, though.

I thought it was one of Stanislaw Lem's novels, but can't find the name now; I might be wrong about that.

Re:Ask HN: Dealing with a Toxic Co-Worker on Tuesday October 06, 2015 @04:12AM (#10337378)
Average level of HN audience is pretty high, and for people with decent programming skill and good English remote is an option - with liveable wage, if you live anywhere outside SFBA/NY/London; and if you live in SFBA/NY/London, you have plenty of options as a developer.

There are ways to add it here on HN with extensions. I'm using "hckr news" myself:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hckr-news/mnlaodle...

Then there is "HN Enhancement Suite" with more users and more functionality:

Re:Ask HN: What do you use to draw graphs? on Thursday August 20, 2015 @08:53AM (#10091487)
I see http://www.highcharts.com/ come up now and then.

D3.js is a great tool for data visualization, but that might be an overkill if your needs are simple.

Re:An experiment in gratitude on Tuesday June 09, 2015 @02:27PM (#9687677)
Flattr and Gratipay work on this: repeatedly show support/gratitude to people (Gratipay is mostly oriented on software, Flattr is more broad).

https://flattr.com

https://gratipay.com

Then there's Patreon, but I don't immediately see any software-related stuff there, mostly other creative things (videos/music/drawings etc).

EDIT: a few examples from Flattr:

NoScript: https://flattr.com/thing/42724/NoScript

Open Street Map: https://flattr.com/profile/openstreetmap

EFF: https://flattr.com/profile/EFF

AdBlock: https://flattr.com/thing/118424/AdBlock-For-Chrome

WikiLeaks: https://flattr.com/profile/WikiLeaks

That's a great writeup, thanks!

Would you mind putting some contact info here (or in your profile - email address you provide for registration is not shown publicly)?

Re:Ask HN: Where to get Finnish math books on Monday October 20, 2014 @03:15PM (#8483932)
You might try asking in the Finnish subreddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Finland

It's not very big, but somewhat active.

Then there's a Finnish-language one:

http://www.reddit.com/r/suomi

you might try there if the first one yields nothing.

Good luck!

Makes me wonder - why hasn't anyone made a Linux desktop environments that tries to mimic Windows look and behaviour as much as possible? IP/patent issues maybe?

There would be a huge market for something like that, as this situation shows.

I use 'hckr news' extension for Chrome which has collapsible threads (and also highlights new comments):

Tell HN: A founder of Zombal is looking for people to take over the site

Zombal is a scientific and R&D outsourcing website; it's been featured on HN a few times back when it was launched.I've just received the following email:-----------------------------------------I'm reaching out to the community for expressions of interest to take over zombal.com.Ideally you would have a strong interest in a scientific discipline, and experience in running a website. Yes, but not exactly via "F? SF?" thread. My situation was a bit unusual, so I posted here on "Ask HN" separately, got in touch with a startup founder and worked for him for 9 months - it went great.

During that time we also worked with another guy from HN for a few months - and he got in touch via "F? SF?" thread directly.

So yes, it is possible to find work here on HN.

Re:Why Andrew Ng left Google and joined Baidu on Wednesday July 30, 2014 @04:05PM (#8110608)
I thought that might be the reason, too, so I went to check the number of employees. According to Wikipedia, Baidu has "34,600 (As of March 31, 2014)", and Google "52,069 (Q2 2014)"

So Baidu is 2/3 of Google - it's not just the size.

I heard people recommending Redmine - didn't work with it myself though.
