I think I'm right in suggesting it's free with a bizspark licence, which is a kind of a free licence available to startups.

Whilst the platform (Azure) is clearly proprietary, they're clearly making efforts to offer cross platform IaaS and cross platform client (OpenSource) capabilities for their PaaS offerings.

It maybe a crock of shite, it maybe the best thing since sliced bread but I for one feel that that particular team deserves credit for trying (hard) to adopt open source and make themselves an attractive proposition outside Microsofts traditional core strengths. Time will tell if they're make a success of this...

- Access mandated via FB connect - Mini (proxy) allow integration between opt in site on FB platform via http headers? - Proxy sniffs traffic and gets a hi-fi profile of users. Super targeted advertising, avoiding cookies. - Emerging markets; FB account is used to transfer money, for those without bank accounts.
Re:API Design - Matt Gemmell on Friday May 25, 2012 @10:12AM (#4023533)
I like this. It espouses good engineering principles (tell don't ask etc.) the advice here is in my opinion applicable to most platforms and domains.
The more accessible the grass route tools the greater the chance of adoption. Adoption for Win8 / RT maybe acceptable with the new Express options but frankly I don't see C# developers of the future applying for licences for IDEs to compile their software. They'll just adopt a different more (immediately) accessible platform. Companies will struggle to recruit for server hosted line of business applications. The ecosystem will suffocate. Managers and engineers will consider different platforms as part of their due diligence, as a result I predict less Windows licences will be sold.
Agreed. No matter how complex they key, phyiscal security can nearly always be broken. From mysterious breaks ins to _we have ways of making you talk_

Yeah. I've been on the waiting list for months :(

You're brave sending pull requests to Linus on github for the Linux Kernel from a Windows machine ;)

Good point. If I need the efficiency of a keyboard I will use the git bash cli. I suppose this is why they've bundled powershell git extensions.

It's a first iteration / release. I'm sure with more feedback they'll release more often. I'm unlikely to use this much - because I favour the cli - but I really hope this makes git more accesible to some Windows shops.

Banning wealthy entrepreneurial investors from your country would surely be counter-productive to stimulating growth?
Of course Facebook could acquire / lease Bing (or build perhaps?) and plumb that into Facebook.

A user searches within Facebook and the platform can display the results, apply highly targeted adverts and offer links to comments / endorsements (likes) by friends, Facebook exclusive material from advertisers. From within that platform Facebook could also leverage some commerce / shopping too?

I think I read somewhere that FB embed sound tags in their html to simulate the images trick.
Re:Why Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is a schmuck on Tuesday May 15, 2012 @06:10AM (#3975812)
Corporations are tax efficient, billionaire investors are no different. Eduardo Saverin is a Brazilian, who has settled in Singapore. The only reason he'd retain US citizenship one presumes would be for patriotism or the safety of living in a developed nation. Neither are relevant to Eduardo Saverin.

This piece raises a point raised in Europe a lot regarding tax avoidance (not evasion). Sadly this piece is pathetically vile and borders on xenophobic. It paints the author, zdnet and Dell (the sponsor) in a poor light. It's the sort of comment I'd expect in right-wing reader comments on UK sites like the Telegraph or Mail :-(

What are the ramifications, if Oracle win in the USA but isn't protected by EU legislation?

I seem to be acquiring points from both spurious and cheeky comments made years ago and answers, that haven't been expected. I thank those that participate, but I don't have the inclination to dedicate myself to the cause.

I wonder if Phil Haack's exodus was the straw that broke the camels back? Perhaps this was just the leverage Scott Guthurie required to finally get what that team has craved for some time?
Re:Another EC2 outage (yet AWS dashboard says no error) on Thursday March 15, 2012 @07:10AM (#3707848)
For those of you relieved it happened in the middle of the night. Hi from mid morning London where externally hosted services including their websites mysteriously disappeared for half an hour.

Nothing critical, but certainly a warning shot across the bows.

Re:Why are companies defecting from Google Maps? on Friday March 09, 2012 @11:01AM (#3684551)
Why? Because Google maps is no longer in a position of inertia. Now if you require mapping functionality you'll perform some kind of due diligence based on requirements and constraints.
Re:Difference Between URL and URI on Wednesday March 07, 2012 @11:52AM (#3676054)
I've met Jon Skeet and he sincerely is a really smashing chap. The cult of Skeet on SO is getting a tad much.

(I find sycophantic behaviour a terrible trait)

As a grad I accidently changed hundreds of mortgage expiry dates from UK to US format (rectified immediately). Lesson learnt. Switching Facebook off for 5.5 million people trumps though!
Re:Visual Studio '11' Announced on Friday February 24, 2012 @04:13AM (#3628540)
VS seems to be going the way of Office, only the 80% of features that nobody uses are also often inferior to alternatives.

The bloat associated with VS is utterly unnecessary, I think it's an opportunity missed that VS hasn't been peeled right back to a glorified Notepad++ with the VS Gallery providing the mechanism to add / remove additional features from MS and from third parties.

Re:Germany refuses to sign ACTA (for now) on Friday February 10, 2012 @12:14PM (#3576553)
Concur. Would the movement to save the NHS eclipse any ACTA movement too?
I love how all IBM software looks like a 2001 university project hacked together the night before a deadline in Java.

Agree with your analogy.

We always learn how to pass the driving test, never how to drive. Qualifications and certificates galore. Zero benefit.
