Re:Writing my own dithering algorithm in Racket on Monday April 14, 2025 @03:33PM (#43685288)
This reminds me a bit of the octree quantization implementation I hacked up to improve speed of generating Racket's animated gifs.

Thank you for bringing this up. I had not read this before, but it speaks to my deep concerns.
Re:Donald Knuth's Annual Christmas Lecture 2023 on Thursday December 07, 2023 @01:23AM (#38553462)
Thank you for organizing this. It's been a long time since I've listened to these last, and I remember these were enjoyable for Knuth's gentle humor.
I'm sure the folks working on protein folding are losing sleep over role-playing chatbots.
You may want to read the history of banana republics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_republic.

Given the wildness of that particular dark corner of our history, I'm looking forward to reading about the history we're living through now. Hopefully after some emotional remove, like in another ten years.

Re:Two Years With Emacs as a CEO and now CTO (2018) on Monday July 22, 2019 @07:18PM (#20503174)
I misparsed this as

Two Years (With Emacs as a CEO and now CTO)
as opposed to

Two Years (With Emacs) as a CEO and now CTO.
and it greatly confused me: how could Emacs act as a CEO? It's not that smart, is it? (Or conversely, being a CEO can't be that trivial, right?)

Perhaps rephrase to: "Using Emacs for two years as a CEO and now CTO". The parse tree is still ambiguous, but a little less so.

There's a very nice article about how single-page web applications work that explain the mechanics of using the location API.

... and people ask why browsers are so complicated.

Hilariously enough, "Nasa" is specifically called out as an negative example from the English Wikipedia style guidelines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Capi...

Can anyone tell which low calorie sweeteners the study is talking about? Certain artificial sweeteners elicit a large insulin response even if they are "low-calorie". Did they use any of the sweeteners listed in https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-drinks/...?

If by "laughingstock", you mean of the millions of lives that his foundation has saved from infant mortality, thus giving those folks the opportunity to smile and laugh, then I agree with that sentiment.
How many of you have immigrant parents who, where English is a second language, would have great difficulty performing the kind of verbal gymnastics that you take for granted?
Another point: the documentary about FineArt from Tencent makes it very clear that folks there consider the race for AI analogously to the race to the atomic bomb. https://www.reddit.com/r/cbaduk/comments/7ryw0q/7_fine_art_d...
Re:Google’s Latest Search: What Happened to Its Bikes? on Friday January 05, 2018 @07:42PM (#16083057)
The bikes literally have an explicit warning sign on them saying not to take them. There's nothing implicit about this. http://www.timboelaars.nl/media/image/resized/7f65959de38848...

I was really hoping that this article was going to talk about some kind of machine-learned model that had been used to improve holiday parties. My hopes, dashed against the shores of reality.
Re:How ‘Weird Al’ eclipsed most stars he parodied on Saturday February 18, 2017 @07:47PM (#13677557)
His "Word Crimes" is one of the more entertaining videos I've seen, because not only is it a "ha ha just serious" kind of song, but the animations in the video are just spot on.

You may be underestimating the overwhelming power of spam. That is, you're attributing a fear of negative attention. That might be true, but I suspect the concern has more to do with abuse. Don't underestimate the power of abusive users who have disproportionate power.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority, but I find the ragdolls in Dark Souls to be hilarious and charming.

... uh, if rolling around with corpses could be described as hilarious and charming. Wow. I just realized how very strange video games are.
