Re:“The Right Tool For The Job” Isn't on Wednesday November 13, 2013 @04:43PM (#6728779)
ha, so true. much like "judgement" is the best technical skill you can hire for - far too many tech wizards spend 6 wks for +5% perf gain :(

huh. still pretty cool site, though seems like valid complaints. curious what author would say about crowdtilt/ their new api - did $400k for soylent no-food stuff in 2 days right?

Re:Ark bought Carsabi on Tuesday December 11, 2012 @04:29AM (#4903779)
fwiw acquihire means fb gets your investors some money back and you get a decent offer when Craigslist sues you and things go south. as car search is not particularly relevant to social media, we were pretty happy to turn over the IP to Ark as another Cal grad search company and can't wait to see what they do with it.
way to go James and co!!!! (plus damn great party)
congrats Mehul and team!
Re:How to Pitch a Journalist Successfully on Tuesday July 03, 2012 @02:15AM (#4192792)
great stuff as usual tdm!
yup. we got a cease and desist as well along with padmapper. we're trying to contact craigslist and see if there's a way to work with them. wish us luck!
oh yeah, this has nothing to do with what you should buy - we just built the tool after a few beers this weekend because it seemed like it would be cool to easily visualize every car for sale in SF... hope its enjoyable!

also - we are building a comprehensive recommendation engine for the top 50-100 models by collecting everything from EPA & NHTSA safety data to style awards and max lifetime mileage. this is probably a month out and has required getting pretty creative about crawling a number of heterogeneous data sources

Re:Efficiently Browsing Text or Code (esp. with Emacs) on Wednesday March 14, 2012 @05:09PM (#3705378)
awesome article, thanks K!
We used hireArt to screen writers and got a ton of really good responses. the site still needs some work in automating the work sample process and I think we need to societally normalize/figure out the trial process (how do you build trust that I'm not looking for freebie work) but the premise is good - I'm done hiring people on the faith that they wont turn in complete shit. ::cough cough:: elance.
Re:Hacking the Used Car Purchase on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @05:29PM (#3535510)
Data was across the US. I tried looking for regional trends (price variation, etc), but at least at the state/major metropolitan area level price and availability distributions were surprisingly homogeneous. I'm hoping to deep dive later in more detail, but for saving money there didn't seem to be much on the regional front worth reporting. Thanks for reading!
stick it to the man, wepay!!!!
Re:Show HN: Glider, a better email client on Friday January 27, 2012 @03:31PM (#3520009)
In the abstract sense of having an electronic personal secretary that knew me well sort my email for me, yes!!! Absolutely yes and I'd pay $20/mo without blinking.

That said it appears a non-trivial classification / UI problem on a few fronts. Good luck :)

Re:Show HN: Craigslist Car Search on Tuesday January 24, 2012 @07:13PM (#3507661)
hm, not sure how we'd add exclusion to the search. do you find any of the price/mileage filters useful or do you really just want to be able to say "No Hyundai" (or whatever)?

I think we'd also like to add some basic recommendation engine type stuff soon - my last car was a $500 tercel so feel you on the ubercheap classification. If we had a "Sort by Cheapest Reliable" option would that be useful?

Thanks!
