You could argue that the browser does provide you with a “free”, native tooltip OOTB.
How so?

Check out React Ink, it's pretty slow and probably not as polished/feature packed, but it does the job.

That being said, working in the CLI with a GUI does not work very well.

Having the option to search for strings logged in some pages ago is really handy.

Great idea, I can’t wait for this approach to become more popular. I hope the rising popularity of Shadow DOM, along with 3rd party cookie blockage will help put an end to tracking, at least in technical terms.

Ask HN: Choosing the Next Job

I am a 36 y/o engineer from Tel Aviv, in between jobs.I am looking for advice, as I really am torn between 4 options. For more than a decade I did mostly front end and some back end.I've launched a few products (all have failed) and co-founded a startup, long ago.I'm a UI-centric, product enthusiast, who's next big thing he'd like to explore is Deep Learning, specifically image processing.The...

Re:Show HN: Project Zero – An app for (crypto) bettors on Monday December 14, 2020 @03:00PM (#25422428)
Hey all,

I'm working on an app that lists odds from the following crypto sites:

1xBit

Betcoin

Betcris

Betonline

Bodova

Bookmaker

Cloudbet

FortuneJack

Intertops

Nitrogen Sports

Sportsbet

Stake

Thunderpick

The app works by scraping data directly via the users' computers and sharing it with other users (sort of like how BitTorrent, everyone fetches a small piece, together they make up a whole picture).

The app will be free and possibly open-sourced.

The app will be available soon (about 3-4 weeks), screenshots and early beta signup links are here: https://project-ze.ro/

An actual href'd link to the issue: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/100335

Again, sorry if this isn't kosher.

VSCode feature request: Implement Google Chrome-like grouped tabs

I submitted a feature request to VSCode for something pretty new that was recently added to Google Chrome (see https://blog.google/products/chrome/manage-tabs-with-google-chrome/)The request it for a Grouped Tabs mechanism, similar to what Chrome introduced. It lets you create a "group" of adjacent tabs, where groups can have a name and color, displayed next to it.If you like it and would like...

I think Apple _will_ budge for HEY

Apple so far has shown no mercy when it came to small companies, or even with big ones (see Adobe's Flash, RIP).With HEY, Apple is again, picking on a small company, but probably the biggest one so far. Basecamp isn't Adobe.Apple is also probably facing an upcoming EU investigation. So far Apple had no reason whatsoever to acknowledge indie developers' needs (in that context). But HEY is...

Thanks!
Nice app!

Delivering this in three weeks is very impressive.

Mind sharing how you made the walkthrough video?

I wanted to do something similar and yours really catches the eye.

Re:Show HN: The Gives – Watch videos with friends on Saturday May 30, 2020 @07:24AM (#23360360)
I'm re-posting this as now the app actually works!

I also open-sourced the project, you can play around with the code here: https://github.com/dutzi/the-gives

I ranted about YouTube search quota limits here, if you're interested: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23360328

Ask HN: Has anyone had any success with increasing YouTube's search quota?

About a month ago I was working on The Gives (https://the.gives), a web app that lets you watch YouTube videos with others while video chatting with them. The app was pretty simple, search for YouTube video through it (I was using YouTube's search API) select one of them and get a magic link, share that link with a friend and you'll both watch that video (in sync) while video chatting with one...

Hm, I wasn't aware of it, I'll check it out
Not right now, but if I find it becoming pricy I might ask users to verify their account by phone beyond a certain usage threshold, to prevent spammers from using it.

If it keeps getting bigger I'll try other database solutions (MongoDB, DynamoDb, ...)

Yeah, but I liked the domain, it reminded me of 60's rock bands I like.
Re:Show HN: The Gives – Watch videos with friends on Monday April 20, 2020 @11:27AM (#22924703)
I will add an option to paste a YouTube's video URL, so you can search on YouTube and then navigate back to The Gives and watch it.
Re:Show HN: The Gives – Watch videos with friends on Monday April 20, 2020 @11:09AM (#22924469)
I will definitely do it if YouTube rejects my quota requests. Otherwise, I plan on keeping in close for now.
Re:Show HN: The Gives – Watch videos with friends on Monday April 20, 2020 @09:46AM (#22923754)
I've exceeded YouTube's quota. I've placed a fixture with preloaded results of John Oliver clips instead. Sorry about that. I'll try working with YouTube on getting this sorted out.

The platform lets you search for YouTube videos, once clicking on a video, the app creates a room, whoever joins this room will watch that video in sync with you, while both parties are video chatting.

I have https://clusterwm.com/ set up to open once I hit Cmd+Shift+L.

It opens a new tab with a list of open tabs and a (focused) search field you can use to filter that list. Really useful when you have a ton of open tabs and looking for one in particular.

Ask HN: The imperative approach to animations just makes so much more sense

For me, writing animations declaratively is just painful. So I made a tiny animation orchestrating library for React and React Router and wrote the following post about it and a bit about why thee declarative approach to animations is such a nightmare for me.https://dutzi.party/animating-route-transitions-using-react-router/The relevant bit:> I don’t like writing complex animations in a...
