Re:Breaking down Amazon's mega dropdown on Thursday March 07, 2013 @06:37PM (#5341139)
Once, I put a broken treadmill on the curb with a sign that said "Free." I came back a while later and it had a sign that said "$20".
I think it's fair to say that when people suggest "any amount of money" they have already bounded it by what is reasonable. Of course the Koch bros. aren't going to pay you $10m/yr to scale their website. They don't even pay people that much to spout their agenda. Similarly, "any amount of money" probably means 150% or so of the going market rate.
But daylight saving occurs during the time when you already have more daylight than the vast majority of habitable landmass does. You aren't "saving" daylight at all during the daylight poor months when you're inside at work during the entire daylight period.
Re:The Sharp Dropoff In Worker Happiness on Monday April 30, 2012 @02:06PM (#3910462)
The feeling of helplessness in this economy is probably a big part of the problem. In 2005, someone could feel like they had the option to switch employers, and routinely make that choice to stay. Now, that option is probably not available to most people, and perhaps they feel like they're under the gun.
"NSAIDS such as asprin" (wddty.com). So that means that 20,000 is ascribed also to ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen, ketorolac, etc. While there is risk from all of them, the risk is dose-dependent.

I remember that Buckminster Fuller said he started out dressing in a shirt without a tie and nobody took his message urgently. So he started dressing like a banker. That was a long time ago, but perhaps the lesson remains.

Give me a quick (or configurable, or special URL) that includes a "search on Google Scholar" link and I will switch from Google. Ever since Google's visual refresh that removed the menu item for search on google scholar, I've lost one of my timesavers.
Re:Why is the DOS path character "\"? on Monday March 19, 2012 @10:19PM (#3727465)
are you saying they looked into the future and chose a character next to return on a keyboard that hadn't been designed yet?

My point is that posession would still be punishable by law.
Re:The Caging of America on Sunday March 11, 2012 @09:58PM (#3692029)
IANAL, but I think marijuana is specifically mentioned in the U.S. Code and it would take more than an executive order to change the law. While it might be removed from "Schedule I", that would just make Schedule I incomplete.

I'm just noticing, reading this, that I find "get out of my face with indeed.com" to be more offensive than if you said, "screw indeed.com", even though the former seems less dirty. Language is a funny thing!

Doing a mix of user evaluation of appearance combined with algorithmic evaluation of stroke order would be helpful.
Re:All About Circuits on Thursday February 16, 2012 @08:33PM (#3601607)
I remember from learning to program that there was a point where, probably because of good teaching, I "got it" and then I was able to teach myself. But I haven't yet gotten to the autodidact point in electronics. I've been looking for the book that gives me this "got it" experience!
Re:All About Circuits on Thursday February 16, 2012 @08:30PM (#3601598)
I meant design.
Re:All About Circuits on Thursday February 16, 2012 @07:54PM (#3601486)
Am I the only one who can work through electronics textbook after textbook and still can't figure out how to wire a reasonably useful circuit?

An important first step is to call her office and tell them how this personally affects you as her constituent. Then, organize professors from the universities in the district to call her and tell her how this personally affects them.

If you want to organize people on the street, I would recommend asking people on the street whether they support their tax dollars going to pay overpriced publishers whose tax base is in Europe when the articles could be published at low cost, on the web, in the US, while universities get to save more of their money for education.

When the economy improves and they have trouble finding employees they pay junior employees more than senior employees.

I have difficulty believing Microsoft would have introduced a cutesy BSOD without at least focus grouping it. Anyone know for sure?

Are you referring to Wilbur Mercer from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Re:Go East, Young Man on Tuesday January 10, 2012 @10:48AM (#3447317)
I know exactly what you mean. I have also vouched for someone in the past and watched it flame out. I try not to let it cause me to be less generous in the future.
Unfortunately, the article doesn't answer the question of why NY had starkly higher insurance premiums before those two rules were implemented in 2009. I was purchasing insurance in NY in 2002-2005 and premiums were 3-4 times what they are in other states. This was before 2009, and partially before Timothy's law, and all that.

I think, perhaps, the fact that NY has such comprehensive support at the low end of the income distribution, through medicaid, family health plus, healthy NY, etc., causes all of those young, healthy but lower-income people to drop out of the market for insurance. This leaves higher-income and older people in the self-insured and employer-sponsored pools, driving up the base rates.

In any event, a study by the Manhattan Institute, as referenced by the article, isn't very trustworthy. It would be very hard for them to release a study that said anything different, which to me means that there is inherent bias.

Re:Watch a VC use my name to sell a con on Tuesday November 29, 2011 @06:05AM (#3289874)
You may think you're shaking hands with someone but he's actually picking your pocket. "Count your fingers after shaking hands with that guy" is an idiom suggesting that the guy will steal one.
Re:Tell congress to stop SOPA with a physical letter on Tuesday November 15, 2011 @08:16PM (#3241225)
Individual postal letters have considerably more influence than form e-mails, but I don't know what category these letters would be placed in. I worry that a letter that is sent from an automated website might not carry as much weight as putting your own letter in an envelope, handwriting the address, and sending it out from your zip code.

Supposedly, the constituent contacts that carry the most weight are in-person visits to the congressperson's office, contacts from people authorized to represent groups of constituents (like mayors), individual letters that are not copied from a form, and individual phone calls that are not read from a script.

If anyone has a reason to be in Washington, calling the office of your congressperson and scheduling a meeting with their staff during that time will be very helpful, especially if your congressperson is on a relevant committee, in this case the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.
