News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

dudeofjude

thanks, worked like a charm.

So having flashed the BIOS and upgrading it, should I be secure that there is no rootkit inside the machine?

any pointers how to go about?
Please post some detailed analyiys of what's going on here. What data gets out? What type of suspicious activities?

    They know my gmail passwords.
- Have you tried package-capturing with wireshark on the internet connections your laptop makes?

    Yes.
- Are you sure that there's no other attack point in your network that could be more easily infected than a BIOS?

    Can be.
- Have you checked your phone for instance?

    Downgraded the phone.

- Have you checked the Master Boot Record of your harddrive?

    Yes.
- Have you checked your router?

    Don't have access.
- Have you tried unhackme (rootkit scanner) ?

    Yes.
A BIOS is very device specific, which would mean that either somebody finds you very interesting on a level that's NSA-tech worthy, or China hackers just leveled up.

I have a hard time just believing this, and there's a ton of attack angles that would be much more efficient to bug someone.

     I am facing it.
Also. Since when was hacker news downgraded to a personal helpdesk?

Where else shall I go to resolve the crisis?
Do you have pointers on flashing the bios.

Had tried that TDSSKiller earlier.

How were you monitoring communications?

Is it possible for me to monitor any communication that is going at BIOS level?

BIOS is still there, right?
avast antivirus.

Ask HN: Solopreneur(Tech) seeks pricing demo/selling/negotiation advice

The collective features that I provide, if you use other softwares would cost somewhere around 500 - 600 USD per month. The MVP is ready, and I want to approach the first customer. I want to do a demo for him. And then make sure at least he pays me half the market price. If you kind of throw in pointers how to go about price...

What are the painpoints that you are suffering from hootsuite?
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your Twitter timeline? on Friday July 19, 2013 @05:42AM (#6069140)
Can we all collectively come up with something like zero inbox in the context of tweets?
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your Twitter timeline? on Friday July 19, 2013 @05:41AM (#6069138)
IMO people get slightly offended/feel bad if you unfollow them.

But as a gesture of politeness, you might want to follow someone who has followed you and is close to you, but at the same time you would not want to listen to all his tweets, in that case, silence might work, and not unfollowing.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your Twitter timeline? on Friday July 19, 2013 @05:05AM (#6069008)
so how many people do you follow? and do you read all the tweets in the timeline? have you never got irritated by the crap that people come up with? for me its like, i get irritated and my fuse shorts :) and then hit back with a biting tweet, which is actually a result of getting irritated on the BS tweets which I find in the TL.

due to these reactive tweets I have lost couple of followers over time ;)

having read your thoughts, do you think, there can be something like zero inbox for twitter??

Ask HN: How do you manage your Twitter timeline?

I was just curious how people managed the tweets in their timeline. I struggle at them, and written below is why:Assumptions:1. You follow around 100 people.2. 50% of them tweet 5 times a day.3. 20% of them tweet once.4. 10% of them tweet once in a week.5. 10% of them tweet 10 times a day. This is a rough estimate for the people I follow. If you calculate there is a total of 250 + 20 + 100 = 370...

Ask HN: How do I go about delivering my first sales pitch/demo?

I have been working on this project, it is sort of CRM but targeted towards a particular vertical say, "not for profits". Incidentally, I came to an organization, they allowed me a free space to work. They asked me about what I was into, and then, I told them the stuff, they said they were going to look for SugarCRM.I am mostly a developer, and have seldom done a sales pitch. After talking in...

Don't worry, there are several permutations and combinations in the world.
What if he tells me the next week - "my dear friend, I have some other priorities in life, I won't be able to focus on building the startup anymore??"

And 3 months down the line I later realize, some friend of his, is running a similar startup??

So what do you suggest?
Running it alone is pain, I can do things on my own, but that model does not scale. It takes too long. Besides I can't be expert at everything. So I need to add people with complementary skillsets.

I make sure people gel well with me, but you can't give everything you got to a new comer, no matter how genuine he appears, right?

I can't go on trusting someone straightaway. He is a front end guy, but heavily investing time in learning python and sys admin stuff.

He appears genuine to me, but still, one should be cautious and keep in mind and think for future, if something goes wrong, precautionary measures should be in place.

It will take some more time, and some sort of litmus test to validate if he is trustworthy. All that glitters is not gold, right?

Ask HN: What do I tell my co-founder when he asks access to the source code?

I have a bootstrapped startup. A co-founder has joined me recently, he is a front end guy, and inclined on learning the backend stuff.I have put in 6 months of effort building the entire codebase and business. He keeps asking me access to the source code?If I give access to it, I fear I might loose all that which I have created. If things are good, as of now, everything might work well, but in...

Ask HN: What are minimal validations to be done before starting on an idea?

I am at a hackathon, there are several ideas being proposed. I can contribute as a developer. But I want to make sure, I choose the idea which makes most sense from business POV.So what are the minimal checks that I should do, to validate that the idea is good enough, and I can proceed further. So the question is what minimal Qs should be asked before to validate the idea?Basically it boils down...

what kind of addon, would you suggest?

Ask HN: How would you want the next Craigslist like?

Cragislist has been there, since long. A next generation product in terms of technology, in terms of value addition to consumers, in terms of use of user experience I believe is the need of the time. How do fellows over here, think about the problem? How would you go about fixing Craigslist? What are the troubles you face in Craigslist, and what is your idea of the next generation Listing site?
