Ask HN: How do you use extra mouse buttons?

I use a Logitech G900[1] that I bought when I was gaming a lot. Now I have 4-8 extra buttons, and I'm wondering if folks have found clever uses for them.Software development-related shortcuts are particularly welcome, but I'm interested in anything you've got up your sleeve.[1]: https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-mice/g900-chaos-spectrum-mouse.html

I know what you mean, that's the one feature I'm wanting for, as well. It's not supported yet, according to the YouTrack issues[1][2][3].

If you get a chance, upvote those issues and/or make your voice heard in the comments!

I agree, mostly.

An example of "close enough" for me is the IdeaVim plugin[1] for JetBrains IDEs. It supports all the features I need to be quite productive, including registers. The killer feature is that it reads in an `~/.ideavimrc` file, in which I can just `source ~/.vimrc`.

I wish more apps had that level of Vim support. Loading a `vimrc` file like that would be a killer feature for a notetaking app.

I’m probably in the minority, but for a notetaking app to be “pretty much perfect” I absolutely need to be able to easily view and edit notes with vim/nvim, or at least have basic Vim emulation.

I was using vimwiki for a while, but have since switched to notational-fzf-vim[1], which is basically Notational Velocity for Vim, powered by fzf and ripgrep. So far, it's exactly what I've been looking for.

Come to think of it, I don't see why you couldn't use both vimwiki and notational-fzf-vim. That might be pretty good actually.

I was just reading a bit about Burroughs and put “Naked Lunch” on my to-read list.

Any other recommendations?

The “Cocktails” section goes straight from one Springsteen reference to another (“Racing in the Street” and “The River”). I love it.
