A ship uses fuel all the time, just to keep the lights on. And it could cost thousands of dollars in diesel fuel to even move to the next available port.

Fuel costs are a deal breaker for ships, trucks, and RVs, too.

I think not. Mr. Fielder has had ample opportunity to do any kind of journalism he wanted, and he's chosen the "spoof" brand.

Isn't that the point? That it has to be a spoof and the question is, "Who's zoomin' who?," as Aretha Franklin put it?

This is really comprehensive and simple at the same time, and I say that as a long time user of Lit, which shares many of these goals.

It's fantastic to see the browser itself doing the heavy lifting for advanced UI, without over reliance on frameworks and servers.

OP buries the lede.

The film is by Nathan Fielder, who specializes in fake situations and fake documentaries.

It's a super ugly website.
Re:Show HN: TV Explorer. Improving UI for a Solid IPTV App on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:08PM (#50124742)
Howdy HN!

I launched this IPTV app earlier this year and got some great responses here on HN:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48325624

It reaches about 2,000 people a day, but the user interface never really got beyond `geek` status and I think that hindered our uptake.

Yesterday, I put up a new version with a vastly different UI to try give it a more "consumer" feel, like the big streaming apps.

-- A big challenge is navigating 10,000+ channels of TV without relying heavily on a keyboard or mouse. Solved here with thumbnails and scrollable, customizable sets of buttons.

-- Another challenge was information density on small screens, or even on big screens without detracting from the TV-watching experience. This version does more with information hiding, tap-to-control, and hints and affordances.

-- The worst problem with live streaming TV when you don't control the source is knowing what's live vs geoblocked or offline. This version fixes that by live scanning the genre and filter you asked for in the background, surfacing channels that are known to be live and streaming openly to you right now.

-- Finally, the rubber hit the road with monetization. I wanted a sponsorship model like a stadium but I spent months on personal approaches to the "right" people and got nowhere. Ad supported, free TV (or sub to remove ads) is an established biz model so maybe I just give the people what they want?

I got so much great input last time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on any and all of the above!

-- Is this UI better than the last one, or any good at all if it's your first time?

-- Is TV Explorer something you'd enjoy yourself, or share with someone?

-- Finally, how would you monetize it? Is the (test, Watson) ad bar intrusive? Would you pay to have it go away, watch with it there, or leave the site?

Thank you to everyone who looks at this. I'm honored to be able to reach out to this community.

Gandhi said you can judge a society by how it treats its animals.

Eventually, we will decide that all uses of animals for entertainment are unethical.

This is another nail in the coffin of these unnecessary actions which aren't helpful to animals.

Outlawing cetacean shows, roadside zoos, and horse and dog racing are other terrific aspects of this trend!

Run at true speed: "Expect the page to load Wednesday at 5pm!"

Cool demo project.

Cursor and SpaceX AI Grok.

It's a great combo for software dev and priced lower than the Anthropic and OpenAI models.

It's lovely! I've played with all kinds of synth hardware and software but I could never wire up all the parts and boxes in something like Reaktor. Kudos!
Or anywhere without so many lithium batteries.
Assuming here that you don't live in the US.
Which is?

I think what needs to happen now (not next) is fix the roads truckers drive on. I'm not one one of them but everything in America depends on them and we're making them drive unsafe roads.

Go out in an RV, big truck, or trailer and you'll see what these guys deal with on top of diesel prices, some of which is tax for road repair!

Re:Trump orders US Government to call AI 'Super Intelligence' on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:10PM (#49903123)
Will everyone stop saying "AI" (2 syllables) and say "Superintelligence" (6 syllables) instead?
Re:The Truth Physics Can No Longer Ignore on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @10:54AM (#49894401)
We definitely have a system which believes that science solves everything, despite it not being able to create life or even really change how life works in any significant way.

I'm not implying any kind of answer or intelligent design. We don't have an explanation for life and that's ok. But it clearly isn't the domain of science in its entirety.

There's a lot of dangerous infrastructure in America. This is far from the only road that causes accidents and deaths on the regular because it is in inherently unsafe or was designed for different kinds of traffic than it has now.

The fact that this road was built in the previous century makes it part of that second category.

In general, we seem unwilling to invest in American road infrastructure. I'd be willing to bet that potholes, the unexciting normal kind you don't even notice in a car, cause more loss of life and loss of money than any particular dramatic road.

Noam Chomsky is a good person to ask. He spent his career asking that.
Re:The Truth Physics Can No Longer Ignore on Sunday September 27, 2026 @10:25PM (#49872851)
This article was written to refute that exact, and incorrect, belief.

For most of human history, it was obvious that life was of a higher order than matter, since the latter cannot be coalesced into the former.

An ignorant kind of scientism, narrow in focus, spent the last hundred years trying to rub out that basic truth and replace it with a system run by scientists, none of whom can make life but many of whom are very good at taking it away.

Re:Paul Graham on LLMs 'Thinking' on Friday September 25, 2026 @10:25PM (#49852603)
It's outside its purview, which is the domain of voltage high/low and Boolean logic. Those do not imply, require, or provide thinking.
Re:Paul Graham on LLMs 'Thinking' on Friday September 25, 2026 @10:24PM (#49852599)
Sure. Study any basic text about how a processor functions. Now watch a dog learn a trick. There is no correspondence.

It's fun sci-fi to think that people are machines, too. Descartes started it.

The corollary is that when the product gets this big and this good (it's terrific), someone is going to buy it.

It's a sign that the developers built a product with demand.

Three years is long term in the tech and VC world.

At a $300M sale, the project achieved its goal and it's time to exit.

Re:Biology Might Not Be Quantum, but Its Math Is Quantumlike on Thursday September 24, 2026 @10:30PM (#49839549)
The structures on which life happens are obviously quantum, like all of the physical universe thus observed.

But, life is not made up of that substance and doesn't come from quantum (or macro) materials. A constant puzzle for science and the theme of all religions is how, exactly, life and consciousness might arise on these surfaces.

Re:Paul Graham on LLMs 'Thinking' on Thursday September 24, 2026 @10:26PM (#49839522)
Next they'll tell you they can make life because we're all just an electrochemical soup.

Uh, huh. Sure we are.

Re:Paul Graham on LLMs 'Thinking' on Thursday September 24, 2026 @10:24PM (#49839513)
So Paul thinks LLMs, think?

We can add you to the list of smart folks who have lost their minds over this topic, and all for a failure to understand the basic computer science on which they're built.

I guess if you get too far away from the metal (and too high up in the boardroom), it's easy to lose touch.
