Yes, that would deter me personally but I can't fault anyone else who feels that those things aren't relevant.

Re:The reverse job applicant on Tuesday October 19, 2010 @03:24PM (#1808371)
While that is the De facto rule in career centers, there is a rule that usurps it, which is if it really does distinguish you from the average applicant, use it.
You could expand the question to say why do abc, disney, and espn all include go.com in their url? Obviously they all share the same ownership. Although I think there would be better ways to promote cross brand pollination.

There is an IMBD link: http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi1301021721/. Although it just looks like an embedded hulu player.

Yes, I didn't want to editorialize and I've never seen this available online before.

Everyone is free to think what they want.

The privatization of the Bolivian water supply was the most poignant moment for me.

Re:Gift HN: Anybody want a subdomain of ww.com? on Friday October 15, 2010 @07:17PM (#1796731)
duncanspencer.ww.com -> duncanspencer.com (174.133.21.104/web74.webfaction.com)

I Appreciate it.

Be careful about calling any part of web design cutting-edge. It may change quickly what is in fashion on the web, don't mistake that for being technically challenging.
Re:Microsoft Buying Adobe? on Thursday October 07, 2010 @05:31PM (#1769625)
Apple doesn't license PDF from Adobe even though it is part of OS X's native graphics renderer.

“The Quartz renderer and the PDF interpreter that Apple ships with Mac OS X are built with Apple code, with no external licenses, by Apple employees. Adobe just publishes a specification for how it’s supposed to function. This gives Apple considerably more flexibility with regard to what Quartz and the PDF interpreter can be used for.”

You mean those too poor to own a house so they don't get the John-McCain-8-house-ownership-tax-credit?
Re:How Fake Money Saved Brazil on Monday October 04, 2010 @11:31PM (#1758489)
What part of the New Deal is 'oddly' happening again? $300 billion of the $862 billion dollar stimulus were either tax cuts or credits.

Here is a link seemingly debunking that guise of an academic study: http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=10644 Fair warning it might cause cognitive dissonance.

Off topic:

I just tried embedding a marquee inside of a marquee and it surprisingly worked.

Colbert's faux opposing rally http://www.keepfearalive.com/ .

I also thought it was odd in the source of both pages is a commented out link that solicited donations.

Re:Mac OS X Public Beta on Monday September 13, 2010 @10:38PM (#1689203)
Depends which consistency you mean. It wasn't consistent prior to 10 when you went to press the green button to get the mini-player and the orientation of the buttons changed from horizontal to vertical. If I'm remembering correctly.

I like your other points though.

Re:How Obama's Stimulus is Changing America on Thursday September 09, 2010 @11:37PM (#1677801)
The point you're making has been debated ad nauseum in the past so I won't attempt to refute it.

What I took from the article was that while the stimulus/recovery act was largely sold, and perceived rightfully or wrongfully, as a jobs bill, that likely won't be its legacy.

I think it is intellectually dishonest to compare the economy of Greece to that of the United States. In fact the article states that the stimulus funds aren't being directed like earmarks past, but acting in the same vein as venture capitalists. In the United States 80% of new jobs are created by way of small businesses. Yet that says nothing about how new industries are born (e.g. the DARPA funding that spawned the current internet economy).

Re:How to End the Great Recession on Sunday September 05, 2010 @12:49PM (#1664753)
I don't think you read the article.

We can't support a consumerist economy when the top 1%, who don't reinvest their money necessarily, earn 23% of the wealth.

Who is taking money away from those trying to earn it? Sounded to me when Reich suggested free public education and eliminating federal payroll taxes on the first $20,000 earned, is not punishing earners.

Re:Straight Dope on the IPod's Birth on Thursday August 12, 2010 @07:44PM (#1599554)
The other kicker about the original use of firewire was that it could charge the iPod simultaneously while syncing. I don't recall usb 1.1 being able to charge a device.
Re:Straight Dope on the IPod's Birth on Thursday August 12, 2010 @07:40PM (#1599543)
Maybe the purchase of LaLa will change that.
Re:Federal workers earning 2X their private counterparts on Wednesday August 11, 2010 @06:44PM (#1596452)
Well said.

Wages have flatlined over the past 30 years, partially because the higher cost of benefits has absorbed what would have been a pay raise.

I'm glad whenever someone, whether they are government workers or union workers (or both), can secure a living wage. It's a victory for the entire middle class.

I had early access to computers but never programmed or hacked (besides changing resource files in Mac OS) until taking a formal Pascal class in high school. I remember committing my first crime of copyright infringement, giving the elementary school our copy of Mario Teaches Typing to install in the lab.

As someone who liked computers but didn't start programming until later, I would argue if you started hacking at age 8 you are just a geek (me too), nothing more, nothing less.

"Apple will be happy to take PC reference designs from Intel (or AMD?) and repackage them in nice mobile and desktop enclosures—effectively outsourcing PC R&D to the chipmaker—while focusing its own engineering efforts on differentiating its post-PC products from the rest of the market... a market that will soon include Intel-made smartphone reference designs."

Since when has Apple outsourced R&D of anything recently? Pretty sure the iPad A4 chip is not a repackaged Intel chip. The research and design that went into the unibody macbook pros doesn't seem like they are raising the white flag just yet either.

I agree. This says only 50-100 direct employees, once operational: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/07/maiden-nc-now-home...
They did open a large datacenter in North Carolina recently for mobileme and iTunes hosting. Albeit for a 10 year tax break, but they would have received that from any state.
