Re:Temporal: The 9-Year Journey to Fix Time in JavaScript on Thursday March 12, 2026 @01:06AM (#47346718)
That's a great example of the kind of wrong assumption that makes dealing with dates and times so challenging.

Some countries start on a Friday or Saturday and until 2022 Iran could start any day of the week although never at 3AM.

The keyboard doesn't fit in my screen, making it really hard to type a p.
I thought it was just thought that it would take too long for them to spiral into each other for it to have happened enough times in our universe

It's not guaranteed you will always win in 2 steps because occasionally you will win in 1 step.

I think displaying black or white pixels makes a bigger difference.

Your odds add up to more than 1.
Re:Gemini 2.5 on Wednesday March 26, 2025 @02:54AM (#43479507)
I solved it in less than 15 minutes while walking my dog, no pen or paper. But I wouldn't claim to be a random person without math skills. And my very first guess was correct.

It was a fun puzzle though and I'm surprised I didn't know it already. Thanks for sharing.

Re:'Groups' Underpin Modern Math on Sunday September 08, 2024 @01:46AM (#41478429)
Why do you need to merge counts if you look for unique elements? Isn't the count always 1 for each element present? Isn't the key to shard your chunks so each element can appear in at most one chunk?
Code search not just across the entire code base but across all of time.
Puzzle 00576224 is ambiguous because the example input is symmetrical but the test input isn't.

Re:Ask HN: What do you want in an ideal VPN? on Tuesday May 07, 2024 @12:53AM (#40282467)
I just want endpoints in many countries, high enough speed, and cheap.
Obviously extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I just posted hoping that more knowledgeable people than me can comment.

Nice game!

It seems to fail to compute this properly:

2^0+(sqrt(sqrt(2)))^(4!)

It should be 65 but gives E.

Radiolab did an episode about this in 2015: https://radiolab.org/podcast/eye-sky

They actually did do a surveillance experiment in Dayton Ohio in 2014: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/new-surve...

Do you climb during the day and glide at night to save battery? And if so, how much difference does it make?
Re:Would You Kill the Fat Man? [pdf] on Sunday October 15, 2023 @05:58AM (#37888447)
Why are those 5 people there? How can I be sure they'd be killed? How can I be sure they don't want to be killed. It's not wrong not to kill the one man because you can't be sure of the situation.
> Downside of CC is it's still too expensive

Some googling suggests that it's $200 per metric ton, is that right?

That would put the cost of capturing the world's entire footprint at $7T per year. That's a lot of money but seems pretty close to worth doing. Especially given that once we decide to do it, it will get cheaper quickly.

I didn't know `])` but `%` to jump between matching brackets seems just as good?
There are thousands of people called "Jesus". What exactly does it mean to say Jesus existed? Does James Bond exist?

What the... That's not "an abundance of caution". That's the only possible course of action.

Re:Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York on Saturday November 26, 2022 @02:13AM (#33750629)
Even for poor citizens, electricity shouldn't be subsidized. They should get straight up money and decide for themselves if they want to use it for (non-subsidized) electricity or if they can use it more efficiently on something else.
Re:Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York on Saturday November 26, 2022 @02:12AM (#33750624)
If they can only exist when subsidized, we need to decide explicitly whether the business is worth subsidizing. Not keep lots of businesses alive through subsidized electricity while they would otherwise not be profitable.
Re:Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York on Thursday November 24, 2022 @10:34AM (#33732468)
It shouldn't be subsidized. That's the real problem.
Re:Size is the best predictor of code quality (2011) on Friday November 11, 2022 @04:24PM (#33567062)
You can't just divide a code base that's entangled. If you disentangle it, you'll remove some bugs in the process. My feeling is that it's super-linear for this reason.
You don't really need to run an experiment on Alaska. There is a long history.
