Re:Doug McIlroy: McCarthy Presents Lisp (2009) on Monday February 10, 2025 @04:25PM (#43005369)
That was a 4.5 hour drive for Dr McIlroy... quite a hike, but worth it.

Thank you Steve! Really enjoying this tutorial. No questions so far.
Re:Steve Klabnik's Tutorial on Jujutsu (Git replacement) on Friday October 18, 2024 @12:58PM (#41881264)
Steve wrote this in a very approachable style. It is the first time I really understood what 'jj' is about. I'm actually kind of excited to start using this tool with my git repos.
Re:Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users on Thursday October 17, 2024 @04:40PM (#41873532)
I noticed this a while back when I was trying to read cloudflare's own blog. Periodically they would block my newsreader. I ended up just dropping their feed.

I am glad to see other people calling out the problem. Hopefully, a solution will emerge.

Re:Anatomy of Lisp by John Allen on Friday April 12, 2024 @03:17AM (#40010154)
Thanks for making this happen. I gave up on trying to find this book years ago. It is so good to see this finally available.
Re:A truly incredible fact about the number 37 on Monday November 13, 2023 @11:25PM (#38259149)
No mention of 37 signals? Maybe the aliens are trying to test our math skills?

Re:ARM’s Cortex A53: Tiny but Important on Monday May 29, 2023 @01:40PM (#36116138)
No mention of the Raspberry Pi use of the processor core is a bit strange given the comprehensive analysis.
Agreed. I use this all the time.
Re:Htmx on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @10:25PM (#33994759)
Funny - top stories right now are Sveltekit 1.0 and htmx. At their heart, each is fundamentally going in a different direction. I wonder how many people are upvoting both.
Re:Making all your integers positive with zigzag encoding on Monday November 28, 2022 @12:21AM (#33770086)
Came here to say the same thing. When I first saw the protobuf zigzag encoding, I saw the same pattern. At first, I thought I must be wrong because they aren't describing it this way. Nope, it really is that simple.

In earlier computer systems (pre 1980s), this kind of variety was more common. In my career, I have only been exposed to twos-complement or float formats. I would bet that this is true for many other engineers as well.

I'm glad the protobuf folks used it. I'm also glad Dr. Lemire wrote an article about it. It is another clever trick to have in the toolbox.

Also because it is not a nop on x86-64
Re:What does an idle CPU do? (2014) on Wednesday June 29, 2022 @12:29AM (#31916510)
Can you tell us more about this system? ECC on an 8086 was rare.

Hey Chuck - been trying to email you. You have a bad link to your VAX stuff on your main web site.

Which chapter in Gems III has this? I couldn’t find it.
Re:Wuffs’ PNG image decoder on Wednesday April 07, 2021 @02:26AM (#26721143)
Ah - forgot about this. Thx for posting this. These little languages really keep the system footprint tiny compared to OpenSSL.
Re:J-Core Open Processor on Sunday August 11, 2019 @09:19PM (#20671684)
I think they are still alive, and I think the project is interesting.

They never did ship their little turtle fpga board.

Also, it seems like it just didn’t catch fire like the RISC-V project has.

Re:Are statecharts the next big UI paradigm? on Saturday December 02, 2017 @07:57PM (#15835333)
When EmberJS was young, one of the early contributors tried to make statecharts first class in the framework.

Ask HN: Best tech for a web site 2018? (PHP, Rails, Django, Node, Go, etc.)?

Back in the day, PHP was a great tool for getting a site up quickly. Then Ruby on Rails took off in 2006 and took the lead. It was the "batteries included" of web frameworks. You could build a CRUD app very quickly. Many other language frameworks followed and evolved. It is almost 2018. What do you think is the best tech for a web app these days? Here are some features I could quickly think of: ...
