Re:Show HN: Jobs for English speakers in Germany on Saturday March 16, 2019 @01:35PM (#19409016)
Posted this here 4 years ago, the number of jobs has been steadily increasing ever since, and this only captures a portion of the market. I figured it was time to "show it" again.

Re:Pinboard's New Pricing Policy on Monday December 15, 2014 @05:33AM (#8751358)
Can someone give me some hints about pinboard's advantages over, lets say, delicious?

I know people love it over here but from what I've read it seems to be more about the openness of the creator that the product itself.

Re:Tax crackdown on banks and multinationals 'to raise £5bn' on Wednesday December 03, 2014 @10:15AM (#8694098)
The term "google tax" made me think is was related to google having to pay ISPs for using their tubes. Glad to see that is about actual tax evasion.
I up-voted this in "new" in the hopes of an interesting debate from smarter people than me about why Plan 9 didn't succeed or what would it take for a new OS to break the status quo. But 2 hours in, 0 comments. Is there really nothing to say anymore about this?

Okay. here's a question: how would the world look like today had Android started based on Plan 9 instead of Linux?

Everything, I get proper referral feeds, RSS feeds, some scrapping and on-site posting. Everything that is not posted on-site is a just link to the original source.

what are the main differences between SPDY 4 and 3.1?
Re:Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate and from what? on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @09:06AM (#8630040)
My German job board https://englishjobs.de started generating around $50 per month on some link referrals, but the site is still on dippers.
Re:The German reference letter system on Tuesday November 18, 2014 @08:19AM (#8623721)
I believe that's a "einfachen Arbeitszeugnis". But the employee has the right to a "qualifizierten Arbeitszeugnis" so one of these days someone might come back and ask you for a grading one.
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @08:22AM (#8589632)
Thanks. It was only 3 weeks ago that I send a few invitations to companies to publish their jobs directly. Right now there are only 63 own jobs for 1183 external. I hope that changes in the future but I guess it will need time and more exposure. Typo fixed!
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @08:09AM (#8589595)
Old fashion manual way, just standard debian packages for nginx+elasticsearch and one go binary controlled under runit.
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @08:05AM (#8589577)
not hard, but I'm now sure if there's enough offer/demand for Austria to justify losing the focus on Germany.
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @04:59AM (#8589122)
Thanks! There wasn't one for Germany and I needed it, so I scratched my own itch. if you have the knowledge go ahead and do it yourself!

On a side note, if you want to know how a GO app + elasticsearch stuffed into a $5 digitalocean droplet looks like feel free to snoop around https://englishjobs.de/status/
Re:Show HN: English-speaking jobs in Germany on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @03:55AM (#8588937)
So this is the product of quite a lot of hours of work. I know that most of you have no intention of moving to Germany and this is not relevant to you, but nonetheless I would be grateful for any feedback you can give me.

If by any chance you're a English-speaking employer on the area, shoot me an email and I'll be happy to send you an invitation to post your jobs.

shame that the audio is not a bit better.
Re:Softonic fires 66% of its employees on Monday October 27, 2014 @07:15AM (#8514821)
I remember the days when softonic was "the" place to go to discover new software. Then the whole site started to become shady with SMS for fast downloads and whatnot. At that point I stopped trusting the site completely, I guess I was not the only one.
Re:PostgreSQL is more popular than MySQL on Thursday October 23, 2014 @10:11AM (#8498185)
Yes, I know your feeling. But sometimes you need to be pragmatic, specially when resources are limited, and in many use cases you can stick to the standard ORM functionality and forget about what's underneath.
Re:PostgreSQL is more popular than MySQL on Thursday October 23, 2014 @09:52AM (#8498089)
At work we are moving from Postgresql to MySQL, simply because for our current needs both will do just fine, and as of today, thanks to galera cluster, a high availability setup in MySQL is much easier to operate.
Re:The Pirate Bay Runs on 21 “Raid-Proof” Virtual Machines on Sunday September 21, 2014 @01:18PM (#8347661)
In an ideal world yes. Or if your software works already seamlessly cross-datacenter. But in the real world is rare that your hosting provider is good at both VMs and metal. At least that's the biggest problem I've always encountered, specially with budget providers.
Re:The Pirate Bay Runs on 21 “Raid-Proof” Virtual Machines on Sunday September 21, 2014 @11:16AM (#8347339)
They are more expensive, but they are usually easy and immediate to acquire. Which makes provisioning much more efficient in case of fluctuating traffic. And overall sysadmins will have less tendency to over-provision, meaning getting more and beefier machines than it's needed "to be safe".
Re:Thoughts on Rust and Go on Thursday September 18, 2014 @05:38PM (#8337780)
Go's biggest feature is its minimalism, that makes the cognitive load of using Go really low, and that makes writing and reading Go code really easy (albeit sometimes more verbose). That's something that no other compiled language that I know of has. And that's why Go is so popular.
