Ask HN: Founders' expectations

YC's W15 application deadline is Oct 14. What do founders, who have already applied or who are planning to apply soon, expect to gain from YC W15 program ? Money, Network and Mentorship are often sighted as primary reasons to join such program but which one is the most important among these three ? Are there any other expectations ?I am not affiliated with YC or any other accelerator/incubator...

Important numbers.

" To date, Yo has had over 2 million installs of the app and currently has over 2,000 developers who have started working with the API. "

Quote from the about page (http://www.ycombinator.com/about/) ...

"At Y Combinator, our goal is to get you through the first phase. This usually means: get you to the point where you’ve built something impressive enough to raise money on a larger scale. Then we can introduce you to later stage investors—or occasionally even acquirers."

Re:YC Portfolio Stats on Wednesday July 16, 2014 @07:22PM (#8045172)
YC's goal is to help startups take first baby steps and raise money on a larger scale.

So most important stat is what % of companies do that. Based on your data it seems (76 + XYZ) out of 716 where XYZ is companies out of 121 exits who raised more money prior to exit.

It'd be interesting to know based on cohort (batch) analysis if YC is getting better in achieving its goal or not.

It'd also be interesting to know where YC stands on this compared to other comparable accelerators/incubators.

How much time Quora founders are going to spend at YC headquarter during the program ?

Dividend amount is usually based on extra cash generated by a company. However, lower margin does not directly translate to less cash generated by the company.
Re:New YC Partner Investment Policy on Friday January 31, 2014 @01:19PM (#7158156)
This might impact startup fundraising trajectory. Investors may prefer to wait out for 3 weeks if VC partner's investment is a strong enough signal for them.
With billion dollar valuations these are not startups rather corporate giants.
No, it does not mean only build for iOS onwards.

It means give primary focus to iOS7 in terms of performance, UI, design idioms, usage of underlying technologies etc….

It means don't build apps targeting prior iOS and just reply upon backward compatibility of iOS7. Use iOS7 as your main target OS.

Any reference to support your claim that LLVM bit code is quite large ?

You need both to add value. How would a technology that is not used by anyone add value ? Note that, marketing is not just advertising.

Your response seems to assume that she has earned MBA, but she has not. http://www.linkedin.com/in/juliesupan
In 90s, technical founders were able to launch startups successfully if they were technically strong. Getting designer was not top priority at the time. So everyone focused on having strong technical teams.

Eventually, people figured out that having someone with design skills early on your team can provide huge competitive advantage to your startup against tech only competitors. And today designer's role is very prominent in startup world.

Now all startups have technical and designing strengths on their team from day one, what do you need to stay one step ahead of the crowd ?

I have a feeling that code-wizard + design-guru team won't be good enough in near future.

Re:In iOS 7, the final straw for Newsstand on Tuesday October 15, 2013 @01:18PM (#6554699)
People do care about privacy if they are given fair choice.

When choices are between

1) FREE (in small print, give up privacy) vs 2) Pay $X (and protect privacy)

FREE overwhelmingly influences the choice.

However, if you find a market where all competitor directly charge comparable prices to consumers for the product and choices are

A) Pay $x and enjoy the product vs B) Pay $x, give up privacy and enjoy the product as well ads

then it'd be interesting if option B) would gain significant traction.

Re:Android is for startups on Wednesday September 04, 2013 @03:38PM (#6329916)
Trick is to find a balance in the process so that author of an App is legally identifiable. This is to avoid episodes like "Fake Angry Bird App" and "Fake Mobile Banking App".

IMO, when I download ETrade App on my smartphone, it is good to know that someone checked that it was submitted by someone who is from ETrade really. If the process is rigorous for E*Trade, so be it. But as an end user I'd prefer it to be that way instead of making it _my_ responsible to verify before installing the app.

Re:Hello. I'm a compiler on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @11:33AM (#5245162)
Now a days, compiler writers sees zero reason to write inline assembly.

First of all, it throws a wrench in high level optimizer's analysis. Plus, compilers and processors are getting smarter day by day while inline assembly in shipping code becomes more and more untouchable everyday.

Re:No, I'm not going to download your bullshit app on Monday February 04, 2013 @01:26PM (#5165968)
Points 7,8,9,10,11 are not about web vs. app. They could be applicable to "old website design" vs. "new website design" story also.
