I like the idea, but the wording might need to change as to how it counts a recommendation. As it stands Mein Kampf has been "recommended" by 651 HNers, a troubling statistic!
I try, but it's much harder these days if you don't rehearse your pitches. Maybe I'm cursed?
It won't deceive me, I went to one of Canada's top business schools and got really good grades.
Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:04AM (#50116456)
Love the idea, but in reality this is a heavy AI-assisted project riddled with weird graphical issues that completely detract from the experience. It's less a window manager, and more akin to a mid-90's CD-ROM puzzle game. For instance having to turn a key to allow shutting down your machine is a cute idea but the key turn animation plays inconsistently, meaning the state of some of the buttons isn't always obvious.
For context I'm sleep deprived so sorry if I've missed something obvious, but what differentiates this with something like Fastmail's masked email offering? I use unique emails for every service I use and it works beautifully. This seems... more complicated? I under there's a price difference, but little else.

An absolute titan, a true pioneer. RIP.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. I finally got round to this to see what the fuss was about, and was very disappointed. Oblique to the point of baffling and unlikable characters aplenty.
Re:A Brief History of the Bloomberg Terminal on Thursday October 01, 2026 @04:08AM (#49919046)
Maybe related, but is anyone familiar with a series of trading terminals from BT in the UK? I cut my teeth in circuitry repair working on these models like the 405 and 405i in the early 2000s. These days I can't find hide nor hair that these things ever existed! Any time there's an article that mentions the Bloomberg terminal I always have dig around for this mythical series of trading platforms, alas I now worry my memory is playing tricks on me.

I went to look at Atuin Desktop to see what the crossover was with this product, and it's fascinating to see that the repo was archived the day this was posted here!

Couldn't agree more. It gets dismissed as nostalgia but the imagination is a wonderful thing for filling the "gaps" in graphical fidelity.

What a horrible thing this is.
Re:Chess Atlas on Sunday September 20, 2026 @08:05AM (#49774982)
There's a mistake towards the end where an image of Rachel Whiteread's set is credited to Damien Hirst. Was this AI-built? If so then I'd worry about other errors.

Re:Chop Up Your Books on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @03:43PM (#49717841)
I hate this. Of course it's your property, you do what you want with it. Do your own illustrations, annotate with abandon, get out the red pen for editing practise... But for me, I love nothing more than reading a book so big that I practically live in it.
Re:IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video] on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:53AM (#49671853)
You've reminded me of a story from the Witcher 3 devs where during an earlier build items would randomly disappear. Horses, weapons, tankards, even NPCs... you name it, on certain conditions they would vanish before the player's eyes. Turns out they weren't just disappearing, they were "teleporting" by effectively respawning at a single point in the dead centre of the map. When they investigated the location there was an innocuous looking dwelling that was packed to the rafters with all the vanished assets. Spending too long in the place would crash the game, presumably because the collection detection on that number of cheeses, sheep, and grunting Nilfgaardian soldiers was just too much.
Absolutely fantastic, for an age I've yearned for an iOS version of Loop Habit Tracker!

Great work.

An artist's response to the godawful recent Tetris clone posted by the White House.
Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @04:52AM (#49533628)
I used to be a fan of Zitron after listening to an old podcast of his, and also subscribing to his newsletter. Something weird happened after Taylor Lorenz guested on his show; a week later I received a welcome email to Taylor's own newsletter. This was especially strange because I definitely hadn't signed up to hers, and use individual masked emails in Fastmail per different service so I was sure that this was the email address originally used for Ed's newsletter. I tried to contact Ed to no avail, and since that day I never could shake the feeling that he just gave Lorenz his subscriber list. I can't prove it for certain, but there was definitely something "off".
Thanks, I appreciate it.
I've been on 40mg citalopram for about 20 years now. I've tried a few times to come off either tapering or cold turkey and in all cases it's been horrendous. My biggest worry is that I'll never be able to come off them as I'm on such a high dosage, even if it was tapered off over a very long period of time.

Is it too late to rename it to Octarine?

What a fantastic charity, I really love the idea.
Re:UK charities count the cost of Beacon CRM cyberattack on Thursday August 06, 2026 @09:54AM (#49196765)
A few years ago we spoke to their CTO about their data model and were appalled at how cavalier they were about having all customer data in the same database and how that was their unique selling point.

We went with a different charity CRM.

Re:Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds on Friday July 10, 2026 @08:13AM (#48858834)
This is one of the most insidious projects I've ever seen and despite the touted credentials of the backers looks to be completely divorced from the realities of how children should be taught.
