News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Was at the beach today and came back to more comments than I anticipated or can respond to! Thanks to those that actually read my story.

I was a little bummed about the detour into how I used AI in writing this blog post so I decided to add an addendum to address it: https://ericpardee.github.io/fire-hd-ownership/#how-this-pos...

In short, I get the anger, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

My intent in creating this blog was to share my tablet story and to get people talking about

- How companies control devices that you purchased and should own

- Today, US frontier models won’t allow users to even discuss exploits

- GLM-5.3 was more capable than Kimi K3 or GLM-5.2 in my experience

- You can be a prompt kiddie and accomplish things if you don’t accept LLM limitations

If I hadn't used GLM-5.3 to get this out, it would have never made it anywhere.

Author here. Quick context: the tablet is a 2021 Fire HD 10 that ran my Home Assistant dashboard and kept powering itself off: the logs showed Amazon's own software issuing the shutdowns, and the only permanent fix was root, which has never existed publicly for this model. Anthropic's and OpenAI's cyber safeguards wouldn't touch the project. Moonshot's Kimi K3 found an unpatched 2022 Mali CVE (CVE-2022-38181: fixed upstream in 2022, patched by Amazon in 2024, but my firmware never got it), GLM-5.2 caught two fatal bugs in the exploit, and GLM-5.3 finished it in a day. The full technical write-up with every offset and dead end is HANDOFF.md in the repo. Happy to answer questions: especially about the model-steering side, which was most of my actual contribution.

“I don’t use this computer for serious work.” Dropped $3K on MBP to play around with. Definitely should have gotten MBA

Ten years ago, I was working for a US post-production company that produced a one-off game show in China. We used OpenVPN to monitor our servers, but it was being blocked. I ended up setting up a new OpenVPN server using obfsproxy, and it worked. It might be worth trying in your situation: https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/TrafficObfuscatio...
You are likely not prompting correctly. https://www.deeplearning.ai/short-courses/chatgpt-prompt-eng...

GPT-4 Passed the Bar Exam, so I think there's something to it https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4389233

From the article https://www.unite.ai/deepfaked-voice-enabled-35-million-bank...

"Though users at the Audio Fakes Discord and the DeepFaceLab Discord are intensely interested in combining the two technologies into a single video+voice live deepfake architecture, no such product has publicly emerged as yet."

While I am aware that it is possible to use software to clone someone's voice, I am uncertain if it is currently feasible to utilize the cloned voice in real-time situations.

I am curious if these scammers are pre-recording conversations and playing them back in real-time or if they are actually able to speak using the cloned voice technology.

Re:How does the Gmail unsubscribe button work? (2020) on Monday May 30, 2022 @09:27AM (#31558719)
The thing about the unsubscribe button that I've found, if you use an alias, [email protected] but your 'real' email is [email protected] (catch-all email), Gmail unsubscribe will submit the 'real' email, [email protected], which doesn't work and can back fire by giving spammers your 'real' email.
