Re:Christopher Tolkien has died on Thursday January 16, 2020 @05:06PM (#22069531)
These lines from The Silmarillion really hit me the other day. It relates pretty well to death and impermanence in general.

"But of bliss and glad life there is little to be said, before it ends: as works fair and wonderful, while still they endure for eyes to see, are their own record, and only when they are in peril or broken forever do they pass into song."

Agreed. I had a brief (~10m) online chat and then received a new Charge HR a couple days later for one with a broken power connector.

I've promoted this idea at my last two jobs. I called it lame vim users anonymous though. Because really, we're all lame vim users.

Amidst all the recent fervor surrounding law enforcement and privacy, I think the documents at the linked site are a good reminder that there are people in law enforcement working to protect the innocent.
Re:ZeroMQ instead of HTTP, for internal services on Tuesday July 23, 2013 @08:40AM (#6089609)
You should have a look at Nitro.

http://gonitro.io/

It's still young, but it grew out of some frustrations with using ZeroMQ in large-scale deployments.

"Also, note even the paper of the user guide and the rivets used to bind the paper."

It looks like they're just standard brass fasteners.

Nothing special. Elementary school kids use them every day.

I'm on one of their pre-paid plans with a Nexus 4. I don't see any DNS hijacking and tether occasionally without issue.

I'm in the Midwest and the coverage is good in urban areas (HSPA+ and good voice). Voice at best in rural areas though.

"Your funnel has a hole in it."

Hopefully it has two ... a big one at the top and a small one at the bottom.

The funnel metaphor has always thrown me off. IRL I don't pour stuff into a funnel and expect less than 100% of what I've poured in to come out the other side.

Why has funnel become a synonym for filter?

Thanks for the tip - this worked for me as well, although I felt kind of dirty doing it (the poor servers!).

I think this is one area where dashboards can help. Chart the metrics that are important to your organization, and prominently display them.

Chart the number of users on your site throughout the day. The number of times they do X or Y, that your app enabled them to do. Put a big counter on the wall for sales/new users/etc. Make a big deal when milestones are reached.

Bug trackers, user complaints, etc can definitely weigh us down. But hopefully there's some encouragement in the data that we're doing some things really right.

I have a six year old son with this same fascination. Sometimes I'll walk into my home office and find some mailer with a QR code sitting there waiting for me. His inquisitive mind just has to know what the phone will do with the code.

Regarding party mode, every photo that I take is not worth sharing. I'll often snap 2-3 trying to get one that looks halfway decent. I don't want to automatically share the poor quality ones along the way.

Yep, agree 100%. I've been telecommuting full-time since 2006. It's not just discipline to work though - as someone else mentioned in this discussion, you've got to pull yourself away from work too.

So discipline and balance, really. Pretty fundamental skills for success, but maybe not skills that everyone applies at home?

"I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience."

Sorry, but this is more than an inconvenience. It's a violation of user privacy that Valve didn't prevent.

I thought that the response from Newell was right on until that point. Left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Take some time to forget about being productive and be creative.

Draw a picture. Bake something delicious. Write a poem.

Then share it with someone.

Re:The Doctor vs. Char Limits on Friday December 31, 2010 @12:19PM (#2055836)
As soon as they defined that 1000 char limit, they set a hard edge. The use cases that hit that limit are then the edge cases, at least in the minds of the developer(s).

I was just suggesting that there should be more consideration of how software will be used in ways that hit limitations.

Re:The Doctor vs. Char Limits on Thursday December 30, 2010 @12:40PM (#2052865)
I think this is a good reminder to thoughtfully consider how we handle edge cases.

I know that I often treat edge cases with the least care. This is certainly a situation where the opposite required.

Re:Complete Noobs Guide to Hacking Nginx on Wednesday December 29, 2010 @09:29AM (#2048746)
Yes. Most browsers support all of the HTTP methods via the XmlHttpRequest object.

http://annevankesteren.nl/2007/10/http-method-support

I use 'watch' to continuously run my suite of unit tests. I write a new test, it starts failing while looping under 'watch', then I write code to make it pass.
Re:So, that was a bummer on Wednesday October 06, 2010 @11:11AM (#1764237)
Sounds like a side effect of relying on MMAP (and not doing compaction).

"Basically, the issue is that if data migrates to a new shard, there is no re-compaction yet in the old shard of the old collection. So there could be small empty spots throughout it which were migrated out, and if the objects are small, there is no effective improvement in RAM caching immediately after the migration." - Dwight Merriman (at the link in the parent).

"The kernel is able to swap/load 4k pages. For a page to be idle from the point of view of the kernel and its LRU algorithm, what is needed is that there are no memory accesses in the whole page for some time."

To my eye the tabs in Chrome make more sense visually too. The tabs appear connected to the document being viewed and not to the address bar like they do in Safari.
