Wall St. protests (mostly small compared to the others you mentioned) did happen..

People do express their dissatisfaction, though it seems to be dwindling with more acceptance of whatever is being thrusted upon them..

Just wondering how committed are the sports fanatics in US/Latin America/India or movie fanatics in India and then comparing the (missing) outrage when liberties are at stake.

if you append ?share=1 to the end of the url, its open again..
Re:Interviewing in Silicon Valley on Tuesday May 07, 2013 @11:09AM (#5668486)
The whole premise of interviewing and opening to the pool of candidates is to evaluate and give every applicant a fair chance after passing a minimum bar. If the whole point was to favor or employ someone (pre-decided or friend), then why this facade?
Re:Ask HN: Do they really build an MVP in a weekend? on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @12:59PM (#3920050)
Nice advice! One finds 2 paths I guess- to focus on the medium (code, framework, etc) or on the results for a MVP.. once the MVP gets enough traction, then even rewriting the whole app is not bad as long as we know the idea has potential.
Re:Domain name valuations on Friday March 25, 2011 @11:39AM (#2368924)
I am surprised to see ww.com in the list there. Unless I missed something in the recent past, wasnt it the webcam based venture he was working on?
Re:Ask HN: Contractions in domain name? on Thursday December 23, 2010 @04:02PM (#2035843)
The trend seems to be that the long url is the actual webapp location whereas the contracted one is for the short url (ff.im vs friendfeed, google vs goo.gl)
Re:Google Voice for iPhone Released on Tuesday November 16, 2010 @02:22PM (#1911232)
If searching in the appstore, "google voice" didnt bring up anything but "googlevoice" worked
Re:Ask HN: Anyone else here struggle with the alcohol? on Thursday November 04, 2010 @12:25PM (#1869554)
is the sliding back due to the need to do "something to wind down" or to get some buzz. If former, cooking and gardening have proven to be therapeutic to me, if later, then it is addiction.

Re:Engadget - We're turning comments off for a bit on Tuesday February 02, 2010 @01:25PM (#1095591)
After reading Siver's post (http://sivers.org/punish), this development seemed like a perfect data point (though I am unaware of the extent of threats etc which drove them to take the decision)
to each his own, but what okcupid might be aiming at is something similar to comments-->leading to blog posts (if I strike a chord with your concise comment at HN, I would be more inclined to check your profile and follow links to say your blog etc and read more.. similarly for dating sites). this is like the trailer->movie effect which is an effect of short attention span and saves time.

Re:Ask HN: Where do you find clients? on Thursday August 27, 2009 @08:49AM (#789098)
True.. I've been seeing something similar by uswaretech whose django posts (found on HN) are informative, showcasing their knowledge/expertise

Re:Ask HN: How did you really learn a foreign language? on Tuesday August 04, 2009 @12:23PM (#741501)
"out in the wild" approach- I had native friends who were more than willing to help me, by correcting my mistakes, and ofcourse making fun of it as well.. and referring to a book whose lines I would use in everyday activities, like buying groceries, normal chitchat during commutes, etc..

also, this might sound weird, but I sometimes forced myself to "think" in the language I was learning.. this was a good practice as it made me more articulate by mapping words to mental images

Re:Ask HN: Personal Bills Management (hosted) recommendation? on Wednesday June 24, 2009 @03:19PM (#672592)
the 37signals post had one of the comments suggest the same, I chatted with a rep and found no OCR/search (though coming shortly ~summer, supposedly) and no reminder/alert (which would again be tied to the ocr capabilities)..

Ask HN: Personal Bills Management (hosted) recommendation?

Hi! I have been looking at hosted solutions for a small group for personal bills management (scan bills, archive in DB) with reminders/alerts etc. Looking around hasnt shown much promise (alternatives to jbilling, citrusdb, etc.) and was wondering if there was anything (preferably FOSS) that you could recommend? thanks..edit- something along the lines of 37signals' solution-...

Re:Ask HN: Feedback on my twitter app - hashlike on Friday March 13, 2009 @04:09PM (#515267)
nice idea of converting blurbs/tweets about stuff people talk into a list.. It might be a nice idea if you had some kind of ranking with things that are most talked about on the top.. got the thought from tweetdeck which shows wordclouds with largest words being the ones most talked about, to see the trend
You can- 1) If you initiate a call via browser from GC's site, you have the option of making the number of your choice (your GC or cell/land #) or 2) if you use GrandDialler app on iPhone, it too can make the call with your GC # as the source

edit- forgot to add, there is vocito app (http://code.google.com/p/vocito/) for mac

Re:Chris Wanstrath's Startup Riot keynote text on Thursday February 19, 2009 @03:36PM (#487795)
good one. gist of keynote- dont be afraid to fail, there is lots to learn from it, follow what you genuinely love and use, and do what works for you best

there is something so enchanting reading about github, 37signals, etc.. they are filled with passion, do not talk about money (as an objective) and most of all inspire others to follow their heart and pursue their love

Re:How to Get Funded in the Recession: The Frugal Mechanic Story on Thursday February 12, 2009 @01:08PM (#478727)
the site didnt seem bad.. all that matters is variety and price (primarily) for the customer (as it isnt a hobby site).. isnt craigslist or ebay bad (not Ajxified etc) as well, aesthetically?
Re:Ask HN: Which school do you attend? on Saturday January 17, 2009 @06:48AM (#438012)
UNM, surprisingly had to point that NM was part of US! keyword 'Mexico' makes ppl jump to conclusions..
the post says "However, we do recognize the upheaval and heartache that these changes may have on Google families, and that we may not be able to keep 100% of these exceptional employees."

So that is <i>some</i> of the 70 employees might be let go.. there is a difference

edit- gotcha, the 100 that you were referring to was the Hiring dept., a separate HN item: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=434522

Re:Ask HN: Is it worth switching to a Mac? on Tuesday December 09, 2008 @05:31PM (#391925)
I recently (<1 month) switched to Mac from Debian. As others have suggested, the initial comfort period might be lil difficult to cope with, but it wont feel like a curve. Things are pretty the same (Eclipse, dir structure, shell etc.), but I havent regretted the "change" yet.. plus the community is good, with nice treatment for apps as in Ubuntu..
