I had sorta forgotten about those guys after the unfavorable media about security vulnerabilities. As a developer I know how important it is to have security built into the foundation of a product and since that first impression I'm just not convinced that they have the technical chops to build a solid product if they didn't get security right.

Thanks for the invite but I think I want to wait a little bit longer and see where they go.

That's a good point about controlling your identity. I think that's really the only reason I still have a FB account: I can remove myself from irresponsible content my friends post. However I think this FB groups fiasco clearly crosses a line.

Ask HN: Serious FB alternatives?

Hi HN, I figure with your expertise in start ups and hot tech companies, you would be the best resource for answering a simple question: is there a social network out there that doesn't suck? In my opinion, FB has become a terrible user experience that just keeps getting worse. The most recent experience being that I keep getting added to stupid groups by my friends, to which the only solution...

At Sporcle, they've added a 'Boss!' button. Now when you're playing games on their site at work and the boss comes around, just click the boss button and something else will pop up in the window!

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on today? on Friday July 09, 2010 @11:21AM (#1500903)
Working on a MUD engine written in PHP, an open sourced pet project of mine for a while now.
Hey there! My first impressions are that Purify looks really professional and well laid out. Like a few others have already posted here, I would recommend some kind of live demo, without which I'm not compelled enough to download the program and tinker with it. However, that being said, I think you have a great looking product and will be happy to read about your updates (and possibly use it after I get a demo!)
Re:Ask HN: How did you find your company & job? on Friday June 11, 2010 @03:21PM (#1424410)
I'm not sure but I think what you are looking for is a network of reliable professionals who you can work for and rely on for support. Something like this, I suspect, you could try to get rolling through a service geared towards professionals, like LinkedIn, but the real answer I think would be to find your own network, or find someone who has a network and tap into them, you know, IRL :)

I met a guy through RAC last year who has projects come up every few months and knows a lot of people and it's been a great professional relationship for both of us. He's the only person in my network, and I definitely couldn't make a living from it, but it's a good start.

I guess the key to what I'm trying to say is meet people and when you find good ones hold on to them!

Craigslist is a good place to start, but you need to be discerning. Find one that has realistic expectations for the job they are asking, and generally it's a good thing when they don't give you a price tag right up front because that means they will pay you based on what you're worth and not some arbitrary number.

My job asked a simple question, what was the title of the book written by 37signals, which reveals a lot about their perspectives. They also included enough information in the Craigslist ad that convinced me they were a technically strong company.

Ask HN: any writers want to offer critiques?

Hackers,After years of pulling scripts and tutorials off the internet to improve my own skills, I want to try to return something back to the community. I'm not selling anything or asking for a review of my start up, I'd just like maybe a critique of my first tutorial, or general comments, or actually really anything would be awesome. The subject is late static bindings in PHP. My writing...

It's all according the prevalence of the topic in the current news cycle. "times square" keeps popping up all over the place, so it is currently #1
