Software tech in China is a different landscape. It's really common to reinvent the wheel in China. Almost every big name (Bytedance, Meituan, etc) have their own of everything with both office political and in house need reasons.

The thing is those stuff are so prevalent those in house tech have reach the point they are competitive. This doubles for quant firm like DeepSeek.

Re:Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon on Friday September 20, 2024 @12:40PM (#41603616)
Hezbollah has been firing rockets to civilian area a day after Oct 7 attack with intent to kill civilians to this day.

But a collateral from targeted attack people lose their mind. Much moral. Very righteous.

My advisor will hang me in the public square if my thesis have sentences remotely close to any paper.

Rules for the but not for me.

As much as @sama is not exactly "great" (World Coin is...ehem). The firing reeks political strife and anyone with enough work experience knows what happens the next year at OpenAI will be anything but grandstanding for those "revolutionists" to stamp out any dissenting voice and fertile ground for the oppotunitists to use the chaos to make things worse. Most of the employee's prime objective will be navigating the political shitstorm than doing their job. The chance OpenAI stay as is before ChatGPT is little to none.

Better run for the lifeboat before the ship hits the iceberg.

Restorative justice at it's finest.
That's exactly what you voted for. enjoy the freedom.
Ah, so it’s like CDMA in WLAN, TIL
While there's "full ownership" meme but at least they make things clear:

* How many are going to be fired.

* When will employee know they are fired.

* Severance package.

No amount of thought and prayer are going to help, straight to the point.

You could have Singapore, or you could be Bob Lee.
Re:Google DeepMind on Friday April 21, 2023 @03:09AM (#35650622)
I suppose with org like Google like this some overhaul is necessary. But I felt they are still playing politics when OpenAI/MS et, al. is murdering their profit margin.
Re:Twitter disables likes or comments on Substack? on Friday April 07, 2023 @11:20AM (#35482493)
Welp, "copy from China" has begun, shadowbanning out link to competitor sites has been standard tactics in China SNS circle(QQ/WeChat/Weibo/Xiaohongshu/Tiktok).

I think it's due for U.S. tech company to learn a thing or two from the dark pattern in China.

I see people excuses this as "it's part and parcel of living in a big city". No it's not, this is a West only phenomenon. Singapore is safe, The entire Japan is safe, Korea, Taiwan. I deliberately removed mainland China cities to avoid "...but authoritarian..." arguments.

Plenty of government in the world kept their citizen safe and getting murdered walking down the street is never a risk factor to those dewellers and they are way worse GDP and even wealth disparity than US.

Re:The Case for Banning Children from Social Media on Wednesday April 05, 2023 @01:54AM (#35449889)
If one brings this up 5 years ago, they are gonna be branded as authoritarian. How times are changed.
Re:AI won't steal your job, people leveraging AI will on Monday April 03, 2023 @11:37AM (#35425571)
Cop out.

You can replace AI with X where X is significant climate changer and it will be always true.

What AIGC is capable today will displace a large amount of workforce and many of them won’t be able to keep up the change(be it age, skills that were valuable but now nullified by AIGC).

Chaos is a ladder but that doesn’t justify the pretenses of Darwinism.

Re:The Twitter Algorithm on Saturday April 01, 2023 @01:13PM (#35401996)
I would say it’s who will be removed.

Considering how Twitter is now getting a servance isn’t that bad of an idea TBH

Most modern SEA country don't have those issue: Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, South Korea.

They all had severe drug problem in the 20th century. They all have drugs get you an express ticket to firing squad, and all of them don't have major drug problem today.

As for Philippine, they are close to failed state since 80s. Drugs lords are rampant, Duterte despite being frowned upon many philippines like him since he's only man are willing to do something about it.

Coming from SEA I always wondering why the west don't ban the drugs.

Yes, illegal drug abuse is still an issue here, but it's nowhere close to major contributor of death and crime.

Re:TikTok Congress Hearing on Friday March 24, 2023 @06:04AM (#35287069)
I think this hearing showed how important playing politics is for any career.

One can be absolute incompetent and clueless in everything but as long as they are good at being performative and playing politics. They can reach top level of organization, have all the power and money without much of the responsibility.

Even if one doesn't like politics, knowing how to read people and identifying politics in play is crucial as an insurance in career.

It's bleak, but that's the way human works.

Re:Try Google's Bard on Tuesday March 21, 2023 @10:25AM (#35246612)
`Bard isn’t currently supported in your country. Stay tuned!`

Yes, I understand the pressure is huge. But all those "soon" are not helping.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re:A world to win: WebAssembly for the rest of us on Monday March 20, 2023 @10:19PM (#35241770)
I would refer to Kelsey Hightower's random twitter space[1]. The last 15 min will do.

On paper it's nice and all but it's just not there yet. I've seen so many hype around WASM since 20 but the promised vision is always "any time soon", this triggers my hype alarm a lot.

Say what you will about Frontend/js ecosystem, at least most js project tells you exactly what value it will bring within 3 screen scrolls. I believe it's better for rest of the SWE community take a page or two from js.

Like 2 months ago in my circle said cloud sector going to see layoffs as most corps are very wasteful on cloud resources and they will likely to cut spending from there.

I guess they were right.

Hang in there, AI hype is just started, I think within a year things will be a lot better, assuming there's no WW3 or Credit Suisse creates another domino effect.

Re:Not by AI on Monday March 20, 2023 @07:40AM (#35230133)
I would argue "organic", "fair trade" is more a marketing-feel-good problem than actually solving the problem. There's always many if and buts which complete nullify the effect of the original label means and manufactures are more interested to lie to consumers.
The issue with Zuck's metaverse is they ignore existing products like VRChat, half-ass everything, and doesn't seem to give a crap about users minus the 2 Quest product line.

Yes, I know their goal is to create walled garden and milk the * out of everyone. However, you need something that people are willing to became the sheep, which zuck's lacked.

Re:Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work on Thursday March 16, 2023 @01:08PM (#35184909)
I really wish I can just send mail with bulletpoints without all the formality stuff and walk around the egg shells.

But alas, that's the way it is. Reminds me the custom in Japan working culture. There are so many unspoken rules you are expected to follow and it became hinderance.

Re:Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work on Thursday March 16, 2023 @01:04PM (#35184851)
One thing I hate MSFT is that once they have a hit product with a name. Anything follows, related or not. will have ride on it and eventually made it meaningless. It was ActiveXXX, it was XboxXXX, it was .NET XXX, it was PowerXXX, now it's Copilot.

Their marketing team need to understand brand names carries weight and if you stuff too many unrelated in the name loses it and will confuse consumers. It's not a good idea.

Re:Not by AI on Thursday March 16, 2023 @09:28AM (#35181668)
Well it takes around 10 years for software to figure out the best monetization model. I suspect we will need a few years before the dust settles
Re:Not by AI on Thursday March 16, 2023 @09:17AM (#35181530)
From consumer’s perspective they don’t care where it came from. In commercial setting(read: 99%) it’s always get stuff cheaper and better. AIGC fits both, the only better options is run faster than the waves and hope it don’t take you(i.e. “learn to code”)

This is the “disruption” we tech and VC has been talking XR/Crypto/5g/metaverse is about. Except it came with large body counts for those who are directly impacted by SD/Llama in the wild,

Re:Not by AI on Thursday March 16, 2023 @09:05AM (#35181372)
Not sure if this is good idea as it provided self identified data from bots to harvest
This is same as BitTorrent did to software/music industries. “Piracy is not steal”, “music labels are too rich”. Spin it all you want. The original business model are built on certain level of difficulty to duplicate the product.

Once it’s gone, building them is fool’s errant. Now you have only SaaS that guts you for little feature and adware that made you the product. All of which are only possible by corps with billions of funding.

Bad incentive, bad outcome. It’s just this time we are the receiving end of the “progress”
