Re:Ditching Medium on Monday January 07, 2019 @10:08AM (#18845692)
I totally agree. The internet is where people live now and there is no "commons", no "public square". This is where people get so irritated with private companies that own all the space and decide how we interact. The internet is a libertarian dystopia. Things like "free speech" would apply on public social media platforms. If this idea were ever to come to fruition it would probably need to start at the local scale and focus on local political issues.
Re:A Good Way to Grant Equity to Your Employees on Wednesday November 02, 2016 @05:32PM (#12859493)
Until companies start having longer exercise periods after employment ends, options have close to no value.
Re:The hunger mood on Saturday August 13, 2016 @10:55AM (#12281717)
do you know the long term success rate though? I've lost over 50 pounds and kept it off for a couple of years, but my body eventually went back to it's normal weight.
The problem is, that's 98% of coders that you've described.
Re:A Nihilist's Guide to Meaning on Tuesday July 12, 2016 @01:53PM (#12081060)
Isn't existentialism the cure for nihilism? It doesn't matter to the universe, but it matters to ME. I exist. From this we are left with the heavy burden of deciding what we think is good and bad, right and wrong.
Re:Jury in Oracle v. Google finds in Google's favour on Friday May 27, 2016 @11:16AM (#11786548)
I disagree that copyright is a natural right. It is a right that societies bestow to creators to incentive them to create. It has not valid purpose beyond that and is quite unnatural to me.Part of the problem with today's law is that it is being pushed as a natural right and a form of justice. This is a fairly recent development, historically speaking.
It sounds like you are coming from a place of extreme privilege. Many many many people have terrible parents.
It turns out there are degrees of PTSD, it's not binary.

You have no idea what you are talking about and are projecting your own life experience on the many people who have actually experienced trauma. It's not something that can't be measured. It's very real and has clear cut physiological risks.

Re:Why Go gets criticized so much on Friday April 08, 2016 @10:59AM (#11455057)
If the engineer who wrote the code understood the problem well and was a decent engineer, then the code will be maintainable no matter what the language is. Understanding the problem well is very rarely achieved.
Re:Vis: A Vim-Like Text Editor on Thursday April 07, 2016 @09:43AM (#11447154)
Why is this better than neovim? How many modern "vi"s do we need?
Tubing is a Python I/O library.

I've been using it for batch data transformation tasks at Embedly. It's still early and things can still change, but it's starting to stabilize. Tell me what you think about the gross abuse of the __or__ operator. I love it, but if I'm alone, I can remove it, or at least remove it from example code.

Re:This is the most depressing chart in the world on Wednesday February 24, 2016 @08:40AM (#11166582)
I would expect as more of the world becomes automated and work becomes easier, we would see more economic growth.
You're right. It's just one categorization of many. I might have more in common with a person who grew up in the same socioeconomic situation as me, but is separated by 30 years, then with someone born the same year as me with a vastly different socioeconomic background.
"we live in a free market society" "AH! GOVERNMENT! PLEASE SAVE ME!!!"

cognitive dissonance is high in that post

"The wealthy working people have earned their right to live in the city. They went out, got an education, work hard, and earned it. I shouldn’t have to worry about being accosted."

I hope to god this guy didn't come from affluence.

I'm 38. I can relate to millennials, but I'm not one. I know many people my age that can't relate at all.
We should create a place were we can put them all so we don't have to see them! Let's call it, a ghetto! </sarcasm>
Re:Denmark confirms US sent rendition flight for Snowden on Friday February 05, 2016 @09:53AM (#11041716)
Listen man, I'm just delivery the news, not defending it. The question was how do people think about it, and that's how they think about it.
Re:Denmark confirms US sent rendition flight for Snowden on Friday February 05, 2016 @09:33AM (#11041609)
Many Americans believe in following the law no matter what. Snowden broke the law. Gun owners are trying to prevent the law from changing.
Re:A Beginner’s Guide to Kerning Like a Designer on Wednesday February 03, 2016 @09:44AM (#11026661)
It seems that the rules are pretty well defined. Why can't computers auto-kern?
Re:Git is insecure by default on Monday February 01, 2016 @09:18AM (#11011833)
What this means is git doesn't make sure that blobs match shas on fetch. Malicious control of source or network can insert nasty things and git won't notice. Solution is setting transfer.fsckobjects = true.
Re:Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation on Friday December 18, 2015 @07:12PM (#10761920)
Where else is the 0.1% going to put their 95% of the worlds wealth?
Re:Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation on Friday December 18, 2015 @07:11PM (#10761913)
Yes. All other things being equal(and they are, for the most part), if you save 10% of your salary a year, you are going to be a lot wealthier upon retirement living in the higher cost of living place. If you want to maximize your retirement fund, you should be looking to move to the place with the highest cost of living possible.
Re:The Insults of Age on Friday December 18, 2015 @09:02AM (#10758424)
I've also started wearing a beard in the last 3 years. Maybe the beard is responsible!
Re:The Insults of Age on Thursday December 17, 2015 @10:37AM (#10752059)
It's interesting that I've had the complete opposite experience as a white man. The older I get the more respect I get in public, for no apparent reason. The painting example was so apt. No one would dare step between me and a painting. It's a very odd thing, as I don't feel like I deserve any more respect than I did 20 years ago.
