Re:Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:26AM (#50324250)
Why would a hotel/store/whatever accept foreign currency even if it was legal? It would be a massive pain in the ass for bookkeeping, etc.
Here you tell them that it was scratched/failed to play properly and it gets resurfaced or replaced (if still available from vendors).

In general library stuff is of relatively high quality and they have budgets for taking care of the collection.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:14AM (#50181388)
They suggest gas peaker plants to cover such climate scenarios (long cold windless winter weeks). Literally their solution for zero carbon is “build gas power plants”. And this isn’t just a coupe but several GW worth and also they only run during those week to two so price is in euros (not cents) per kWh.

Also their listed cost of nuclear power is a lot higher then actual real cost (TVO lists these publicly but every study still uses numbers that are much higher)

Edit: and again if someone wants to build (and pay for it) let them. Electricity production here (Finland) isn’t some single system where someone has control over all the investment but a free market where everyone is free to compete. If you think that you can compete with your solution (and can convince the investors/banks) why should we be saying no you can’t? In electricity production where there is actual cost for CO2 this actually works.

For the record I am against the government giving some guaranteed tariff price (or any other direct subsidy like that) to any production method. If new nuclear can’t be built without such subsidies then we should not build it.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:51AM (#50180049)
It’s not always possible depending on where you are.

Actual real reasons like possibility of continuous dark cold windless weeks in the winter and then the more common/real one. Politics.

Also if someone wants to build nuclear why would you not let them? More production in general is better as long as the public money put into it is the same per kWh produced as wind/solar/whatever why would I care?

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:54AM (#50179388)
And nuclear if you all care about is the carbon footprint.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:59AM (#50131736)
Yeah it now holds a bunch of lap records on tracks without very long straights (where it looses due to not that high top speed). It also took the Goodwood hillclimb in 2022 and held it for a couple years.

The Spierling can do that without moving.

There was the Brabham BT46 that got quickly banned.

On the front of cars you can actually buy and drive there is the McMurty Spierling an electric single seater with a fan generating more downforce then it weighs (can go upside down)

Re:Decade-old RAM is making a comeback on Sunday October 11, 2026 @06:07AM (#50041524)
EU is big and prices vary. (Transfer capacity is limited)

Afaik electricity is around 7c/kWh in China. I got 8c/kWh 2y contract a couple weeks ago here in Finland. Though have to add 4c/kWh for transfer to that (no clue if the Chinese prices I could find include that). Commercial prices are less then that (no VAT and possibly lower power tax bracket. The 8c includes all taxes/fees)

One big problem is a camera in everyone’s pocket together with a culture of posting everything online.

In an environment like that getting drunk just isn’t very good for your life/career. Even something as small as going to the dance floor when you are not really good at it takes a lot more from you when there is 5 cameras recording you the moment you look stupid/funny dancing.

Yeah the minority share holders can’t sue them for not trying to do their job even if it lead to them getting fired. (They could have quit too)

If they truly believe the CEO was destroying the company/its value.

By personally owning 84% of the voting shares. This coup was doomed to fail from the start.
The stuff inside the buildings (servers, switches, storage, cooling, etc) basically the stuff using the electricity and salaries/sub contractors (in addition to some techs handling the servers think security, cleaning, storage management, receiving shipments of new hardware, etc). Some taxes (depends a lot where)
Re:Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy on Thursday September 24, 2026 @12:17AM (#49826199)
TVO in Finland seems to have managed that.

https://www.tvo.fi/material/sites/tvo/sijoittajasivut/pwmzkr...

So profitable yes. Would the owners/investors have made more money if they just bought random stocks based on some index? Probably. But not a loss.

Technically as a Mankala principle company TVO will never make any profit or loss. Profit here is some imaginary “how much money would they have made if the energy was sold directly to the nord pool”

This is effectively the EU age verification system.

Your government (which already has all your details) generates certificates and you just give those out. The other side can the use simple public/private key verification to ensure the cert is valid. Also government does not get information who you gave the cert to and if you create a bunch and single use them the other side can’t follow you between uses using the certs.

Re:Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @11:59AM (#49523811)
It doesn’t cost cost google money to show that content. (It does cost someone else who google would be giving a cut of the ad revenue)

YouTube videos actually have some real world disk space, bandwidth, etc costs just to show so if google doesn’t get to show an ad they lose money instead of an opportunity to make money.

Re:How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @10:54AM (#49435246)
PPWR passed in August 2025 and this part of it came into effect now (a year later). There are other parts of the same regulation that come into effect in 2030.

This is EU doing it in a long span of time similar to GDPR or DMA. A lot of companies just choose to ignore the regulation until a week or two before it comes into effect.

The water that evaporates during cooling does rain down somewhere else at some point.

It isn’t like the water magically disappears. It just gets turned into moisture in the air.

Though that can be very far away depriving the local environment or other industry of the water. Extra bad if that water is pumped up ground water.

Re:Banksy works cost public almost £150k on Sunday August 09, 2026 @01:32PM (#49233496)
It’s street art/graffiti. If someone wants to tag over it let them. Protecting this stuff with tax payer money is just stupid.
Even if the app is no longer using that memory it is not released until Windows thinks another app needs it.

> There’s still a world of difference between a MacBook touchpad and a windows one. My work laptop (18 month old dell XPS) can’t hold a candle to my 6 year old MacBook’s trackpad.

The latest Dell trackpads are quite bad. Price or the product being premium or not unfortunately does not tell you if it will have a good trackpad or not. And it changes over time (Dell XPS used to have really good trackpads)

Basically you have to go to a store and try or find reviews that actually pay attention to this.

Yes datacenters inccrease the prices here but they don't get a cheaper price then everyone else. There is a massive difference there.
The thing people are pissed about is giving better rates to datacenters.

Compare this to most of Europe (and Texas if I understood correctly) where the detacenters buy their electricity from the same market as everyone else (in Europe the spot market or futures) meaning they effectively pay the same price as everyone else.

It’s when they do some back room deal with the local public utility to get 50% off and offload the real costs to the public when people get angry.

> it would say, oh you're right!

This is easily the biggest problem with the current models. The models are just way too eager to please / say yes to the point that the models are happy to lie/make shit up if it means it can say yes.

Re:Java 27: What's New? on Friday July 10, 2026 @02:37PM (#48863564)
There are some actual removal of feature too (breaking backwards compatibility on purpose). But those come with deprecation warnings for years before the actual feature is removed. And even then quite often it is still possible to enable with some feature flag for a version or two.
The council is the prime minister or president (depending on the system). The commission is the government. The government mostly does what the PM/president tells it to do.
Re:Java 27: What's New? on Friday July 10, 2026 @08:34AM (#48859015)
They moved to a schedule instead of waiting for features to be finished.

Basically we get a new major version release on a schedule. Everything that is finished gets packaged in and everything else pushed to the next release.

The issue before was that they marked beforehand "version X will contain feature Y" and then feature Y got delayed by 3 years which means everything else in version X also got delayed by 3 years even though they were done 6 months ago.

If you want to learn you just pretend that you don’t speak English and keep on speaking German. They will switch back fast.
