Another vote here - moving a lot of our stuff over to Mistral. Very much happier keeping data in Europe rather than leeching it all over the US. Plus, the orange lunatic.

Wild, I literally just this week started reading “How to wreck a nice beach” [0] which is already turning out to be a pretty entertaining book. And then this turns up. Thanks HN!

Ask HN: Moving Away from O365 / Google Workspace

We’ve been longtime Google Workspace users in one of my businesses, and O365 in the other. We’re now looking for alternatives, as we’d like to be less US dependent. But - utility is important, as is price. Anyone made the switch, and if so, who to? What are the gotchas?

I’d say per earlier commenter - talk to audiences. A lot. Find out what they actually want, what they actually do, and what engages them. You may find you get a sweet spot with a virtual space + words that works even better than just one or the other!
Re:Show HN: A guided 3D Leonardo da Vinci museum, built in code on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:53AM (#50088607)
I think I’m a little churlish about this whole “skeuomorphic museum exhibition” angle. I’ve worked in and with museum technology for 30 years, and run two businesses working with hundreds of cultural heritage / museum clients.

Although this is technically impressive, I’m just not entirely sure why. Like - I just don’t want to dwell here…

The whole idea that you have to be in some kind of virtual 3D space just seems a little bit 1998 for me. When I worked at the Science Museum in the early 2000’s for example we were thinking about VRML and I was out on gallery shooting 3D pans and knitting them together for the web. Back then it did feel like there was a “if you can’t visit, here’s the next best thing” and that this should be “a virtual reality space online”.

But I think we’ve moved on. Museums have been making online exhibitions that are much more than just “a recreation of the real space online” for 20+ years - many of them are now really good at this. Take a look at someone like the Wellcome Collection [0] stories for example. They’re using the medium really well, they’re writing brilliantly, they’re knitting together fascinating relationships between items. The editorial is brilliant. The insights are brilliant. The linkages are brilliant. And as a consequence of all this, you end up wanting to stay.

Not to knock the OP, it’s nice - I like it, it’s slick, it’s well done, and anyone who gets anything out the door deserves a pat on the back - but I’m not sure it works as an engaging mechanism. Not for me, anyway.

Super inspiring. Will likely send some $$. Nice one, very well done, great story and project :-)
IIIF is your friend here. Many museums / art galleries publish their manifests - example, Science Museum London → https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co6997/...

Be a parent, ffs. And be it, 100%. Be it 500%.

Having kids is easily and by a huge distance the very best thing you can “build”. It’s the best project you’ll ever make.

If you can find a way to run a cool thing on the side then great. I’ve been lucky, or something, and I have. And I love it.

But my kids are a trillion times more important. And now they’re 21 and 19 I can live knowing that I’ve launched the best couple of projects in the world.

The IPO in my parental project arrived and stocks are doing well :-)

I just continually see people I very much like and respect posting stuff on there and the whole thing makes me want to vomit my lunch. I have a profile but wouldn't ever consider posting, liking, boosting, whatever it is you do. I'm very lucky in that I don't (currently at least...) need to promote myself, but I've been kind of shocked that all these people I know seem to be extremely active, and in a not-very-self-aware kind of way.

I guess it's the only place on the web now where people can post updates / follow people that isn't 1. so niche only 3 people are on it (federation), 2. twats and bots (X) or 3. narcissists (insta)

Literally setting fire to the world because the US government is rammed full of corruption and oil cronies. Meanwhile everything is fine for the handful of billionaires who benefit from this shit. Absolutely sickening.
Re:Substack writers, you need a website on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @04:08AM (#49094667)
I'd consider Substack if it had options to make my blog the canonical. But AFAIK that isn't possible; the only way of doing it would be for Substack to be the canonical and my blog the "copy", and that seems dumb from a future thinking perspective?

Yeh I think you’re probably right. But in the wider use of these tools - less so. Yet the uptake for report writing and email sending and …whatever else - massive.

Re:Cannibalism on Monday June 08, 2026 @03:37AM (#48442344)
Great piece, well written and succinctly sums up my thoughts.

The bit I still don’t understand is how we all put up with the hallucinations. I was questioning Gemini last night about whether it could analyse a Fourtet song and give me a break down of the structure from beginning to end. “Sure!” it said with the endless enthusiasm you get from Gen tools, and then proceeded to spit out an absolute sack of fabricated shit. I pushed back, it apologised, and then generated more crap that had nothing to do with reality, I pushed back, we looped again, still just total fiction: “the drums don’t come in until bar 16” on a song that opens with a drum loop, that kind of crap.

We’re so so far away from tools here that are anywhere near being trustworthy and accurate. And yet we (including myself) are chunking out code after code. It’s so bizarre.

I’m guessing it’s that humans don’t have capacity to deal with this kind of scenario - it’s like having a junior staff member who is utterly incredible 90% of the time - completely convincing in their certainty and skill level, and then 10% of the time you catch them doing a shit in their desk drawer because they couldn’t be arsed to walk to the toilet. AI’s are basically sociopaths.

Everything's absolutely fine until you see it runs Windoze
Yeh but you can’t because they need phone validation, no?

> On that last point, this technology is horrific for attention. It's a thermonuclear ADHD amplifier.

Wowzers this resonated with me. I’m an ideas person, and a pretty bad coder, at least compared to the normal HN crew. I’ve found Claude to be absolutely astonishing at creating amazing, working apps that I use all the time. But I’ve also been aware for a while that having no bottleneck on ideas isn’t 100% a happy situation.

I’ve spent years and years - 30, maybe - coming up with various (often web related) ideas and having to kick them into the “no time, not enough expertise” long grass. Claude removed this barrier - which is incredible - but also I’ve become aware about how damaging this is mentally, too.

My attention - already scattered - was totally, totally fucked for a while there, 5 windows with different agents all pumping out my latest, greatest idea, no guard rails, no buffer…

I’ve spent the last month being very deliberately not this - and it’s making a huge difference. I’m lucky because I noticed it, and I’m lucky because I’ve somehow got the wherewithal to do something about it, but it’s all been quite sobering.

15 years in running a tiny micro agency (me and my wife), working with non profits. Still looking ok right now, and I still love it and my clients who are ace. I’m mainly a PM though with hacker-developer tendencies. Hoping my sector hold together for another 10 years. I’m 53 so that’ll do it. We’ve been relatively sensible over the years, good work / life balance and our children (now adult and left home) know who we are. So that’s the main job done :-)
