> Maybe you’re at a restaurant and they need you to open a website for example. You may end up having to bug some people around you for their phone. It can be annoying but I haven’t found this to be too troublesome.

I have been using a profile-based restricted iPhone setup for about 6 months now, and this has been the biggest holdup for me. I've pretty successfully blocked almost everything distracting, but I'm pretty good at finding ways to bypass my restrictions. e.g., I'll find an alternative Reddit client (like Redlib) to bypass my Reddit blocks.

The obvious solution is to use a whitelist instead of a blacklist, but then you completely lose the ability to scan QR codes in the wild.

I'm thinking of building a browser designed for this purpose. Your browsing can begin at certain pre-defined entrypoints, like a news aggregator or a QR code, but you can't manually enter arbitrary URLs or use search engines.

There is no visible plumbing because it kinda is magic! Astro provides adapters for different server runtimes (e.g., Vercel, Cloudflare, Netlify), and it's basically just plug and play. The Cloudflare adapter exposes a bunch of bindings [1] through `Astro.locals.runtime`, which can be accessed during each request. The `cf` binding contains incoming request properties [2], including latitude and longitude.

These bindings (or at least some of them) are also mocked when developing locally, in a non-Cloudflare-Workers environment.

I'm sure that's your totally unbiased opinion ;)
It's always facing the sun (although it doesn't include the sun itself).
Maybe someone smarter than me could add stars to the night sky, so it's not just black.
A server is needed to calculate the sun's position from latitude + longitude + time, and then render the gradient. I could use HTML templating in some other language/framework, but I used Astro because that's what I'm familiar with and it's very easy to deploy to Cloudflare Pages.
I actually included that so the tab and status bars are themed on iOS/Safari. Here's someone else's writeup on that: https://medium.com/@evkirkiles/coloring-the-webkit-browser-b...
Thank you! And umm, not to make you feel ancient, but I think I wasn't even alive yet when `setTimeout(() => location.reload(), ...)` first became widely available.

Show HN: The current sky at your approximate location, as a CSS gradient

https://sky.dlazaro.ca

For HTML Day 2025 [1], I made a web service that displays the current sky at your approximate location as a CSS gradient. Colours are simulated on-demand using atmospheric absorption and scattering coefficients. Updates every minute, without the use of client-side JavaScript.Source code and additional information is available on GitHub: https://github.com/dnlzro/horizon[1]...

Re:The Dollar Is Dead on Monday August 04, 2025 @09:43AM (#44785682)
Unless you're holding only cash, why would that matter? Your real wealth can grow as long as you are holding assets that appreciate faster than the dollar depreciates.
I chose it because it’s what I'm used to and because it makes it really easy to do SSR (I wanted no JS to be sent to the client).
I did that intentionally because the only thing I wanted on the page was the comic panel. I may reconsider and add a small info button in the corner of the page with links to other timescales and the source code.

But I'm also trying not to overthink this too much... It's just a silly little website I made in an evening.

Great suggestion, and thank you!
Ah, that’s too bad. I do plan to update it so that the speech bubbles are SVG objects instead of embedded in the image, which should make it dark mode-friendly.
Happy to hear that — it’s what I was going for :)
Valid, not nitpicking!
Thanks for the suggestion, will do! (I’ll also be open-sourcing it, as I probably should’ve done before posting)
I am debating making a better version where the bubbles are appropriately sized and look nicer and the background is smoother, but I thought it might take away the ‘memeyness’ of it.

I just went with the original background made by the person who seemingly invented the meme format on Tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/incorrecttintin/162088281738

Yes, that was a design goal!

It is probably technically possible to have the time continue to update with just CSS on the client (based on [1]), but the initial time still has to be set server-side.

Show HN: Live-updating version of the 'What a week, huh?' meme

https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/

As a fun evening project, I made a live-updating version of the 'What a week, huh?' meme (based on a panel from The Adventures of Tintin comics [1]).There's a page for every timeframe:- 'What a day': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/day- 'What a week': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/week- 'What a month': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/month- 'What a year': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/yearCurrent time is...

TeX source is available if you want to modify the styling yourself: https://github.com/vEnhance/napkin/
The self-hosted app Actual Budget [1] sort of takes the second approach, where each client maintains their own SQLite database in local storage. However, instead of just hosting a single file database, the server maintains a list of migrations and is able to resolve conflicts between multiple clients. Clients push/pull the migrations when syncing to keep their database up-to-date. E2EE is also supported. The original creator, James Long, has done talks about the architecture if you want to learn more [2, 3].

Re:Creating Perfect Font Fallbacks in CSS on Tuesday June 11, 2024 @08:54AM (#40645674)
I’d love to just use `font-face: sans-serif` and always leave it up to the user, but different font metrics result in different (usually way too big) line heights.

Out of curiosity, what’s your font of choice?

Re:Llm.c – LLM training in simple, pure C/CUDA on Monday April 08, 2024 @05:35PM (#39973976)
The plan is to eventually implement with CUDA:

"Currently, I am working on [...] direct CUDA implementation, which will be significantly faster and probably come close to PyTorch."

It generally requires more plant death to feed and then eat an animal than to just eat the plants directly. [1] Even if the "screaming" was indicative of pain, vegans who are motivated by reducing suffering would not be contradicting themselves by eating only plants.

Re:Concrete.css on Thursday February 08, 2024 @01:21PM (#39305514)
Whether it is a bad idea for usability depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For example, Matthew Butterick's online book Practical Typography styles links so that they are not highlighted or underlined in any way. Instead, they are instead followed by a small red circle [1]:

"Vigorously styled hyperlinks on a page tend to move to the foreground of a reader’s attention, like an HDTV in a hotel bar. [...] The red circle is meant to be noticeable while you’re reading the sentence that contains the link. Otherwise it disappears, so as not to distract."

Re:Show HN: Rank a Random Subject Everyday on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @08:15AM (#39288158)
Mostly. There are some “seedless” fruits (bananas, grapes, etc) which have been bred to be defective, or have become defective because of some natural mutation. [1]

There’s also fruits like coconuts, which don’t have seeds like we normally think of them. The coconut we eat after removing outer layers (exocarp, mesocarp) is a seed.
