Re:What Is Ethereum? on Saturday July 08, 2017 @09:52AM (#14725402)
My article on costs in the ethereum network cover this idea. https://hackernoon.com/ether-purchase-power-df40a38c5a2f?sou...
Re:Blockchains are the new Linux, not the new Internet on Sunday May 28, 2017 @04:53PM (#14436043)
I spend a lot of time in the ethereum proof of stake gitter and I can confirm that this is false. It's actively being researched and still in the roadmap. A hybrid PoS/PoW model will likely come out first.
Re:Mind as an emergent self-organizing process on Sunday December 25, 2016 @02:03AM (#13253305)
I don't think this definition is quite as worthless as you argue. Specifically, you've missed the meaning of "relational". By "embodied" the definition means the physical (brain and rest of body). By "relational" I believe the point is all the stuff that happens to/around/in concert with the physical body and brain. You cannot decouple the brain from the external experiences of the brain, and so the mind must be considered as the processor (the brain) as well as all of the data (stimuli/experiences) that is input and output from the processor.
Re:Super Mario Run on Friday December 16, 2016 @10:08AM (#13193721)
I thought this was going to be an augmented reality running app/game especially because of the recent Pokemon Go. Kind of disappointed when I watched the gameplay video.
Can you elaborate?
Re:The Right Dose of Exercise for a Longer Life on Thursday April 16, 2015 @01:25AM (#9386013)
He is not drawing that conclusion. He is just questioning people's insentives for staying in shape. You get longevity, but actually the great part is you feel better day to day. It's like telling a smoker to quit because he'll feel better day to day breathing and being able to walk longer without catching their breath rather than telling him to quit because he'll die of cancer.
Re:Amid Bitcoin's Bloodbath, Silence from Silicon Valley Press on Saturday January 17, 2015 @11:32AM (#8904660)
Fascinating! Are you suggesting an increase in use as a currency or just an increase in trade as a commodity?
Re:Applying an experimental procedure to fall in love on Saturday January 10, 2015 @11:43AM (#8867085)
Love has a circular definition? I find that interesting. It implies (to me) that more love grows from love. Maybe the experiment successfully lays the down a foundation to begin the circular love reinforcement.
Re:Applying an experimental procedure to fall in love on Saturday January 10, 2015 @11:21AM (#8867033)
Your simple dismissal seems naive. She gives you the boundaries of her "experiment" and is explicit about what she's already bringing to the table. It's an exposé on the experiment itself coupled with an interesting and touching personal experience.
Re:Veteran's Hospital LSD Testing (1956) [video] on Wednesday December 31, 2014 @11:31AM (#8819934)
Jarring might have been the wrong word. I meant instead that the 6-10 hour eye opening experience would have likely caused her to question a lot of things about her life. Sometimes the questions you ask during an acid experience impact how you view yourself and your situation outside of the experience.

Being a 1950s housewife, those questions and realizations might not be coherent with her expected role.

Re:Veteran's Hospital LSD Testing (1956) [video] on Tuesday December 30, 2014 @06:17PM (#8817307)
That clip left me with so many questions. What was the purpose of the dosing? Did they follow up with her? Was there a lasting change in her life?

Seems like it must have been radically jarring to her 1950s housewife societal role.

Re:Math Intuition Cheatsheet on Friday July 25, 2014 @01:06AM (#8083859)
When I took my first programming course, one of things I was most surprised by was case sensitivity. It's kind of funny thinking about it now my perspective is entirely different -- "D" and "d" aren't the same value so why would they mean the same thing?

Is case sensitivity a bad artifact? It doesn't seem like it is to me anymore, but my former self sure thought so.

Re:Catnip-Scented Flyers Turn Felines Into Mailmen on Sunday April 06, 2014 @10:20PM (#7544291)
My thoughts exactly. I have a cat and give him catnip every once in a while. I always have mixed feelings when I see him rolling around on the ground. On the one hand he's in pure ecstasy, but on the other I just drugged my cat.

I'd definitely have some words for any company that drugged my cat without consent.

Re:Ask HN: What do you use for load testing an API? on Tuesday January 14, 2014 @12:50PM (#7058480)
Thanks! loader.io looks like it's pretty simple to get something up and running without any scripting.

cheers!

Ask HN: What do you use for load testing an API?

There seem to be a number of tools (such as JMeter) and services (such as BlazeMeter) to load test APIs, but I am having trouble finding good examples of use cases or assessments of the tools and services. What tools and services have you used and for what use cases? How did you monitor you server and find the bugs and bottlenecks?

How about a "Save the Space Marines" kickstarter to pay for legal costs on your case and future cases involving obsurd legal allegations stifling science fiction writers?
