News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

distantsounds

because we've all figured out that AI is just a huge grift?
Re:A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE on Monday October 05, 2026 @02:24PM (#49968528)
You'd be surprised how little you need from a basic desktop application, and how much of that is provided by Visual Basic out of the box.

Also, have you used VB before? having Timer icons all over your form while not being visible at runtime is fairly par for the course.

Re:Pi 1.0 on Thursday October 01, 2026 @04:35PM (#49926760)
"hundreds of thousands" of people are not using this. i want to see the this claim backed up.
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:05PM (#49614177)
oh, i don't know, an easy means of sharing your library with friends, one of the best features of plex?
Re:OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @09:04AM (#48817210)
the single 2.5gb port kills me. you may as well just have 2 gigabit ports at that point. and don't tell me the wifi is the selling point either, you won't get much more than a gig off 6e.
Re:Native all the way, until you need text on Sunday May 17, 2026 @09:29AM (#48168767)
do you miss Hypercard yet?
Re:A HN post with negative points – how? on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @11:36AM (#48109856)
When you press the downvote button, the points decrease. This number can go below zero, into the negatives.
Re:Men Who Stare at Walls on Monday April 27, 2026 @12:01PM (#47923329)
is meditation just not a form of staring at a wall? i've never been able to keep a staring at a wall habit, but my understanding that staring at a wall often features opening your eyes and focusing on breathing, body parts or some other irrelevant thing, it sounds like meditation would serve the same purpose.
Okay, so, where do you get the music from?
Re:Imgur Geo-Blocked the UK, So I Geo-Unblocked My Network on Friday November 28, 2025 @03:20PM (#46082421)
because saying "i used a split tunnel to access geo-blocked resources" doesn't get you those sweet sweet internet points on hacker news, ofc
Re:Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard (2019) on Monday September 08, 2025 @03:54PM (#45173105)
if you own a domain you can likely update a dynamic DNS record through the registrar's API
Re:How to live on $432 a month in America on Friday May 23, 2025 @03:27PM (#44075796)
this dude _literally_ wrote about a neighboring town that's dying and the government isn't helping them out. https://shagbark.substack.com/p/obituaryland

Convincing people to move to a remote area while at the same time seeing literal ghost towns develop, is not something I would recommend. What happens when the public utilities fail? The roads need repairing? One of the _many_ blizzard-like seasons can knock out critical infrastructure.

why read the manual when you can rewrite the implementation in plain english with zero code and publish to hackernews? wayyyy more internet points!
Re:Cohere Launches Embed 4 on Tuesday April 15, 2025 @03:02PM (#43697061)
so which stolen properties were used to train this model?
So how many neuro-divergent people did you test this on before you made the claim that it would help them?
I love it when James Bond plots come to life.

is that MAME in the backend?
Brilliant? Launching an app for creating events that requires you to 1) own an iDevice and 2) pay into, just to create events?

I'll send an email for free, thankyouverymuch.

Re:The Illustrated DeepSeek-R1 on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @09:46PM (#42860911)
We all knew The Chinese government was going to censor it. The censoring happening in ChatGPT is arguably more interesting since they are not beholden to the US government. I'm more interested in that report.
consider a different remote access option i.e. sunshine + moonlight instead of using steam remote play
welcome to hackernews, where every article posted has something made up about it and the points don't matter
Re:What Will Enter the Public Domain in 2025? on Sunday December 01, 2024 @06:13PM (#42291467)
I'd love to know! Too bad this website only gives a small selection of what those items are, despite the entire lists already being published elsewhere! Very useful, thanks Hacker News!
developers will do anything but actually recreate visual basic
https://github.com/eulerto/wal2json has existed for this purpose for many years, just transform the incoming records into JSON and parse with literally any standard tool that reads the format. There's a literal postgres extension for this.
Re:Database "sharding" came from Ultima Online? on Sunday August 25, 2024 @06:39PM (#41352151)
why is every social media network now just "post something with varying levels of correctness because it farms engagement"

it's so exhausting needing to just read comments to get the actual, real truth

"you mean to tell me AI can't just replace a human?"
