Based on the livestream, the project is for Rob to find the freest Android ROM and phone and then reverse engineer the proprietary bits to the FSF's standards. Not very well communicated, but he seems qualified to do that.

I wrote a similar script that used a TV tuner during the last World Cup. Since I had an ATSC source, I was able to just pull the CTA-708 captions directly and with little delay.

The CFPB. He intends to create a payments app within X and shut down their most immediate regulator of banking and fintech.

That's certainly a material conflict.

To be a bit uncharitable: a sick person seems to want certainty more than anything, which they can project onto an AI much more easily than through work with a careful doctor.
Did you seek prescription treatment after your AI-diagnosis?
Re:Ask HN: What books influenced your moral compass? on Friday February 07, 2025 @08:58AM (#42972561)
I was hoping to see Thoreau here. I'd also recommend his book Walking, maybe even to be read before Walden. It identifies and preempts a lot of what the 'mindfulness' industry deals with and reorients it all around an idea of wilderness.

But I'd also be careful reading Walden. I don't think it's a literal instruction manual as some have taken it.

Re:When will we fix the tools that run the world? on Tuesday January 07, 2025 @10:51PM (#42630712)
Not totally up-to-date on airline things, but:

I was referring to the competing GDS platforms that airlines like Southwest opted not to use. I was trying to be charitable to the author here, because I am partial to how the terminal booking interface just works and allows for almost universal interoperability. You just have to learn how to use it. Of course, there is still greater functionality when using the airline's website directly (dynamic pricing, seat choice), which is "patchy".

Opted not to use /until recently/

I've got a bit of a problem with the example of hospital management software. Given the complexity, particularly in the US, of the healthcare system, why expect the software to be "high-quality"? (Whatever that means).

Agreed on the airline management example though. It's insane how patchy that all is.

Love the weather forecast on the coffee machine. Like so much 2000s tech, such a weird luxury that seems less useful and more experimental.

I do wish there was more openness in FM band technology. As a young ham, HD Radio and DirectBand were both interests of mine — ubiquitous and extensible layers on existing tech — but were so commercial that they will be/were phased out before we get anything substantial to be open.

Re:Itch.io Taken Down by Funko on Monday December 09, 2024 @05:42AM (#42364853)
Funko as a brand exists entirely on derivative content, albeit licensed. Seems like exactly the sort of brand that would trip auto-DMCA software.

Time to link the crawler to a site like keys.lol[1] that indexes and links every Bitcoin private key and figure out a way to sweep it for balances.

Re:Ask HN: What are your experiences with Apple Card? on Thursday November 30, 2023 @10:30PM (#38482776)
There's no annual fee so I'm not sure why someone would regret getting it. I've had it for about 3 years and use it for 3% back at Apple and Walgreens. It does the job.

It really shined on an international vacation about 2 years ago. Where Amex wasn't accepted the no-foreign-transaction-fee Mastercard was very useful.

When I applied they would only do a hard pull on an applicant's credit if they were approved. If that's still the case then I would definitely apply, even just for the thick metal card and the future long-standing line of credit.

Surely you can find it more effectively in your watch history. This feature is to discover videos, not rediscover.
Re:Ask HN: Any good school timetable apps for Linux? on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @12:20AM (#37476908)
Some school schedules are done so classes meet every-other-day. There are A days and B days, which is specified because certain holidays or exam periods might necessitate a break in the sequence.

Schools are often cute with it; they theme the days with their school colors instead of A/B.

Re:Can a worker-owned restaurant work on Monday August 28, 2023 @06:00PM (#37300947)
Have you worked at a worker-owned company? I think, largely, a goal of worker-owned restaurants is to make the work experience less transactional. Is there anything besides stress (which is not mentioned in the article) that would make transactionality and outsized profit a necessary thing?

Re:Driver Adventures for a 1999 Webcam on Friday April 28, 2023 @10:54AM (#35742021)
I have the cam in the article, and it worked off-the-shelf with my Linux box. I temporarily had it set up with a Raspberry Pi as a security cam.

The driver support makes it a lot easier to build Franken-PCs with obscure graphics cards and accessories too. You wouldn't traditionally associate Linux with just working, but in the case of older hardware it is an amazing selling point.

Re:Ask HN: Transcription Software for Thick Accents? on Tuesday April 25, 2023 @10:15AM (#35700800)
I've used the larger Whisper models for people with thick accents and it's been reasonably competent. Worth a try if you've got the hardware.
Re:Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done? on Wednesday April 05, 2023 @01:35PM (#35457699)
Earplugs. I didn't know how much sound bothered me until I tried them.
I just had this issue with my paid account. I just canceled the renewal today, expiring in a few weeks, so I chalked it up to a clumsy downgrading system. Looks like not.
Re:What Is the Most Minimal UK Address Possible? on Friday March 03, 2023 @11:26AM (#35011652)
Nonmachinable mail can be all sorts of shapes as well. I've had a lot of fun cutting cardstock into silhouettes and irregular polygons and mailing them.

When I moved, I sent postcards notifying people of my new address in the shape of my new state. US mail is quite flexible thanks to the nonmachinable surcharge.

Re:Can everyone shut the f*** up about AI on Monday February 27, 2023 @06:55PM (#34963819)
One of the hardest parts of learning to write for print is learning what's worth writing, especially when doing criticism. It's always helpful to ask who will be reading it, what they want, and what style best conveys it to them.

A lot of our professional norms contradict this. I get unnecessarily long emails every day, I sift through byzantine project structures as a profession, and I attend meetings that could have been an email -- all from people more senior than me.

If there's a message in what I'm saying, it's to question everything, especially in writing. If it makes more sense than what you're doing, write short emails, write short blog posts, write nothing at all.

Re:Permission-Slip Culture Is Hurting America on Saturday February 25, 2023 @04:05PM (#34940462)
In my state school bus drivers need to have a CDL and a state certification for school buses. That same CDL allows you to drive food trucks, garbage trucks, and long-haul cargo. The major difference between those jobs and bus driving is working with kids. That doesn't seem redundant to me.

Whether that should be done via a state cert or in job training is another question, though.
