News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Hi all, I wrote this article, and I'm wanting to hear thoughts from the developer community about interactive email, and Google's AMP for Email as I write part 2 of the article.
Thank you to everyone who contributed. There were 205 total responses to the survey.

For "Would you describe today's DESKTOP browsers as 'Innovative'?": Yes = 29% No = 71%

For "Would you describe today's MOBILE browsers as 'Innovative'?": Yes = 14% No = 86%

However, the "No" category includes those who feel that the browser doesn't need to be innovative, and is simply a viewing mechanism.

Actually, keeping the response open-ended has been very valuable in understanding how people interpret "innovation" in this context. In the linked survey, there is an open-ended comment box where you can explain your definition.
Yes, they will be posted back to Hacker News.
Sure, I'm an entrepreneur and fellow Hacker News reader (not a polling agency) looking to get people's thoughts about the state of the browser industry. All responses are anonymous.
So the concern about "innovation" within the context of a browser is that can disrupt how they currently work. That being said, do you think that the separate plugins and applications out there are innovative?
So your feeling is that the browser is more of an invisible delivery mechanism, and not intended to provide anything other than taking you to your chosen web experience. Is that correct?
Thanks evmar, we're getting a really good response size here, and are focusing on the moment on the developer/technophile type of users on this site.
Someone asked what "innovative" means. It's purely up to your definition of the word... but feel free to add comments to explain your thoughts.
Thanks for the survey responses everyone, and please keep them coming!
Are you happy with your choice of browsers today? Do you feel that browser innovation is moving forward quickly enough? Please sound off and take this quick survey.
Thanks for trying PolyBrowser. We were shooting to make PolyBrowser work even on setups like yours (trackpad, no mouse). You can still use Ctrl +/- to zoom in and out, and Control Tab to switch tabs, plus drag with the right mouse button. Thanks so much for the screenshots of those issues!
If you could send screenshots of the error, that would be perfect. Send to (email removed).
Thanks for the thorough review. All excellent points! You're right, we focused on getting everything as reasonably polished as possible before launching version 1.0, so that we could expand the audience and get more feedback (just like this). :)
We haven't experienced that issue, even behind corporate firewalls, but will look into it. Thanks!
Hi chris-at, the open source license is discussed on our website here: https://polybrowser.com/faqs/where-can-i-download-the-source...
PolyBrowser is trending on Product Hunt... http://www.producthunt.com/posts/polybrowser Check it out!
Thanks yangyang. Yes, that's an open issue that we're working on fixing.
There is a mirror download link on the download page (hosted on Dropbox) if you are having download issues. Hopefully that works. Please let us know if you still have issues so that we can set up an alternative. Thanks!
There are still "tabs" that jump you to the chosen website, which always drop you in the correct place (centered on screen) so you don't lose context. The only difference is that if the website is smaller than your screen size, you will see the neighboring websites to the side.
Definitely! For the first release, we had to focus on the biggest bang (Mac/Win) but Linux is coming (as soon as we can).
Hey, everything comes back around eventually. ;) No denying that it saves space, and we are going for a search experience that maximizes screen real estate.
Gecko. It's based on Firefox.
Yes, it's optimized for running multiple websites simultaneously. All tabs are visible and running, but whatever you click on becomes the "active" tab, which helps with resources. Also, non-visible tabs aren't rendered by your video card.

We didn't base this designed on any previous ideas. There have been some other attempts to solve similar problems (tile tabs, etc) but nothing that we felt quite "hit it."

We’re proud to announce the “Version 1.0” release of PolyBrowser, which represents a culmination of years of work combined with community support and feedback. We feel that latest release brings together the speed, features and user experience needed to successfully introduce PolyBrowser to the world.

For those who are new, PolyBrowser is a “Panoramic Web Browser,” meaning that it stitches your websites together, side-by-side, like a panoramic photo. You can zoom out to see all of your websites at once, or zoom in to see the details, plus much more. PolyBrowser enables you to browse faster by breaking free of the limitations of current tabbed browsers.

Hi protestor, we spent quite a bit of time on the Linux version, but due to the OS fragmentation and issues with packaging, we had to make the call to temporarily delay the Linux version. It's still a high priority though, and when we bring on additional development resources we will release it ASAP.

Hello HN! After three years of development, I’m excited to announce the launch of PolyBrowser, a “Panoramic Web Browser” that helps you browse faster by stitching your websites together, side-by-side, like a panoramic photo. You can zoom out to see all of your websites at once, or zoom in to see the details. Our goal is to help you search better and work faster by freeing you from the limitation of seeing only one website at a time. PolyBrowser is tailored for users who keep many tabs open, as well as people who do web research such as students, analysts and journalists.

Please give it a try! (Windows and Mac) Let us know about your experience. (We have a discussion forum at https://PolyBrowser.com.) We are also seeking additional team members and industry advisors. Contact me at aaron.travis (at ) polysuite (dot) com.
