Does anyone remember Groovy? It has @Grab annotation which does essentially the same as add-libs you described. Very conventient for writing scripts.
Putting the ethical dilemmas aside, I'd like to know how such bioprocessors could possibly have:

>million times greater power efficiency when compared to digital processors

if bioprocessors have to support("run" the metabolism) all their organelles, including parts that are not at all involved in the signal processing, which is I suppose >99% of the cell, compared to digital processors that we literally built with the sole purpose of performing such operations and have logical gates close in size to the single layer of atoms already? What did we miss in the design?

Re:We’re ending production of Chromecast on Tuesday August 06, 2024 @12:44PM (#41172572)
>When we launched Chromecast (...) connecting your TV to your phone, tablet or laptop was clunky and hard

I would argue that this still holds true today. Is there any reliable way to do the screen mirroring/photo sharing from an Android phone to a Samsung smart TV without additional devices? My Pixel works great with Chromecast or a similar dongle(e.g. Xiaomi Box) but I really couldn't make it work without them. I tried a couple of options from plain Android sharing, through Samsung's SmartThings, to some sketchy apps that ask for your CC for trial but none of them worked before I gave up and asked my host for a HDMI cable.

The later part refers to the plus addressing, like "[email protected]", which people use to so that "If they later start receiving spam to that address, they know the service has leaked or sold their info.". Now the IAB requests that advertisers should normalise such addresses by dropping the part after the plus sign, and therefore effectively stopping users from "tracking" the advertisers.
Recently I also started coding before breakfast, but in my case it's for work. This is the only way to get something done before a deluge of meetings, bug reports and support requests starts. I'll definitely keep using that timeframe for my personal projects once my day job becomes more organized.

BTW. Contrary to you, I've always considered myself a night owl.

Maybe USA is different but in EU their outdoor clothes are made predominantly of nylon and polyester. I don't think rayon have the properties needed for outdoor jackets.

Obviously, this doesn't mean the man from the video is right, but it's for plenty other reasons.

>Why is inflation so much higher [0] in the US than Europe?

It is not. It looks like the author of the tweet cherry-picked some inflation components but overall it looks equally bad.

And I, as a Polish person, should be especially aware of the importance of geopolitics. Personally, I've been lucky enough to live in a fully sovereign Poland for my whole life but that is something that was a pipe dream for all my ancestors for the last 200 years mostly due to our geographic position between major European powers - so well, geopolitics.

The thing is, I thought these dark times when people are sent to kill each other to redraw some arbitrary lines on the map are long gone, together with its apologists.

Re:Homo Sovieticus on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @09:05AM (#30514254)
Let's step back from these geopolitical speculations for a while and ask: why would any European country invade Russia in any foreseeable future? It's the 21st century, Western Europe has its own problems, barely any army and Russia has nuclear weapons capable of wiping out humankind from the earth. It's real life, not some Paradox Interactive game. I mean, even in times when such invasion could have made more sense, Napoleon's France and Nazi Germany tried, and they both failed miserably. I simply don't understand Russian concerns and I think about them as cheap excuses for enslaving and killing innocent people.
Re:Tell HN: If You Are in Russia on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @08:23AM (#30513791)
Exactly. But this is because many Russians don't understand the concept of agency when it comes to nations. Plus, they think their motherland is the best place on earth. This even applies to the highly-educated individuals e.g. during the war in Donbas in 2014, I had some Russian-born expats coworkers who were genuinely convinced that a) both NATO and EU enlargements in Eastern Europe were CIA's ploys, against "common people will" and b) Russia had nothing to do with that war, it was just people rioting against Ukraine's pro-western politics.
Re:Radical Polish books to add to your reading list on Saturday December 11, 2021 @03:15PM (#29523879)
Thanks, I'll add "The Guide to Modern World Literature" to my reading list (and I guess it will transitively keep this list filled for the next decade or so)

Hi Dang, I think this is the best thread to ask you about that: didn't you have a quote from Bruno Schultz in your 'about' section some time ago? How did you come across him?
Re:OVH is down along with its status page on Wednesday October 13, 2021 @03:56AM (#28849493)
Our servers in Strasburg were down for around 10 minutes, now they are fully operational but it looks like some of their sites are still experiencing issues [1]. On the positive side: it was my second day as on-call and I already had the worst incident(no ssh, provider site is down).

Semi-related: if you enjoy classic Windows UI and feel like going to a nostalgia trip there's a great little game which will make you feel it's the turn of the millennium again - Progressbar95.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with its creators in any way, just wanted to share some fun.

That's exactly my story. I spent first few years of my career in a large company with a formal performance review. Everyone had to set some measurable KPIs with the manager at the beginning of the year and then regularly review it on 1-on-1. It was supposed to be the main factor in determining promotions. I really liked that job and I wanted to get promoted so I worked my a.. off by writing tons of code, tests, fixing bugs that no one had time to look at, doing code reviews, participating in architectural design meetings, helping interns, giving presentations on new libraries etc.

Every year, around September-October when I was close to the finishing line for A grade, either by resolving 200 Jira tickets or increasing test coverage in my code to 85%, my boss would congratulate me, say something about lacking "bigger picture" and then simply add a totally unrealistic goal to my list. One year it was to increase the profit of our department, another to activate ten-person project which was started a month ago in production before the end of Q3. Something that suits a naive junior dev very well, you know. Then at the final review by the end of year he would say that even though my individual objectives were met, I'm not that much of a team player because I failed to achieve goals that are team-oriented.

I have to admit it was a strong team and I was far from being the best developer there but in fact I was doing senior work for junior's salary. When I found out new junior hires earn much more than I do, I decided to hand in my notice. I was offered promotion immediately but still said no and ended up going from regular to a team lead in two years in a startup with no performance review whatsoever.

Thanks everyone for all the recommendations. I need more time to look into them but I just wanted to add here that the book you mentioned [1] stands out as one of the most aesthetically pleasing IT books I've seen.

Re:HTML Tips (2020) on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @05:10PM (#27055885)
Is there any good 'linear'(with a clear learning path, e.g. course/book, as opposed to MDN) resource to learn modern HTML/CSS? Preferably not one starting at Hello World. The thing is I'm primarily a BE developer but I have to do some front-end tasks every now and then and I often catch myself reinventing the HTML5 wheel.
This might be only slightly related to this post but I started wondering: how often do you have to tweak GC in your job? Do you ask/are you asked questions about GC on interviews?

I've just realized that I was asked about this stuff in almost every Java interview I had, sometimes the questions were very detailed (and I was nowhere near HFT or any other real-time systems, GC pauses were minor concerns) but for jobs focused on other languages this topic is almost completely skipped.

Re:The Sweden Solar System on Thursday March 11, 2021 @11:06AM (#26425486)
I was just going to write that there's one in Zurich too (https://www.zuerich.com/en/visit/sport/planet-trail located in a very enjoyable area, highly recommend) but thanks to your wikipedia link I found a comprehensive list of them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_System_model

Looks like Sweden's model is in fact the largest in the world(that is apart from the original)

I think you meant teleological argument, it is the one about irreducible complexity.
I don't know what's idiomatic here as English is not my first language, but according to my dictionary "localize" can also mean "to find the position of something"

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/localize

Maybe it's British vs American English?

A few months ago I came back to Arch with Gnome and Wayland after several years with Mac. Sadly, default Gnome installation is way less functional now than it used to be back then. Screen sharing doesn't work in Skype and Slack because of Wayland. Apparently Zoom circumvents this by making a series of screenshots. Systray is missing and most of extensions that promise to restore it don't work. Some parts of UI(e.g. weather widget) relies on emojis that are not installed by default. I understand that sometimes you need to break stuff in order to move forward but I think this has gone too far already. (I ended up with X11/Cinnamon)
Re:Kivy: Cross-Platform Python Framework for UI Development on Monday December 21, 2020 @07:36AM (#25494335)
I'm not sure about the current state of affairs but a few years ago Ionic used to be a default choice for cross-platform apps among Angular devs. And Angular itself was probably more popular then React in corporate world back then.
This looks really helpful, I'll definitely check it when I run into problems with persistence. Which will be probably very soon - I have to admit I've been using JPA for almost a decade and I still find it so confusing that I'd rather use native SQL for any non-trivial scenario(i.e. everything above plain CRUD). N+1 select problem is far from the hardest issue with JPA, for me it's either mixing managed and detached objects or following weird cascading rules especially during updates.

This one got my attention too. I don't know if it's because it's only one that's monochromatic, or it just reminds me of Radiohead's Kid A artwork.
Re:FreeYourMusic lets users migrate their playlists off Spotify on Wednesday October 14, 2020 @12:35PM (#24778559)
Such transfer actually made perfect sense until recently because they didn't allow to change username. It was brought up on their forums numerous times[1][2] over the years and they only introduced editable profile name in March this year. Until then they advised to create a new account and ask their support by email(sic!) to have your playlists copied.

I used to work at a software house which makes software for few big companies. A few years ago our CEO thought it's time to diversify our income stream by creating some SaaS. He came up with a really then-buzzword-packed(AI, ML, IoT, microservices, Kubernetes, mobile first) product. Quite ambitious, especially for a team of 5 people, regular web devs who had no working experience with any of those. Everyone voiced their concerns but we were told to just use our best efforts.

Long story short: after a year or so, our boss decided to scrap our half-baked system and gave up on the idea of creating some internal product entirely.
