Ask HN: What is your advice for a DevOps newbie?

I'm joining a bootstrapped startup (online service) that just applied for (and received) Series A funding. As we're growing pretty fast (around 10 million users currently), we need to bring down the infrastructure costs and ensure continuous delivery & uptime. I'm graduating in may and currently playing with various tools including Puppet, Chef, Ansible and Salt. I'm more in favor of...

Re:Hy – A dialect of Lisp that’s embedded in Python on Thursday December 04, 2014 @10:02AM (#8699510)

I thought this is not possible in python. Can someone explain ? Python doesn't have tail call optimization and hy produces python AST. Am I missing something ?

I tried reading through the source, but I am still a lisp noob. https://github.com/hylang/hy/blob/master/hy/contrib/loop.hy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSF82AwSDiU Have you seen this TED talk about porn addiction and how it has similar effects like some sort of hard drug addiction on the brain. Everything uses the same pipeline.
Re:Best Linux Laptops (2013) on Saturday December 28, 2013 @02:48AM (#6974352)
Is that the one which comes with a touch screen ? Have you tried using the touch screen ? And I have heard that the whole thing is very flimsy due to the carbon fibre build, what's your take on this ?
Re:Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools on Friday December 27, 2013 @08:18AM (#6970492)
I love quoting RMS. "What schools should refuse to do is teach dependence. Those corporations offer free samples to schools for the same reason tobacco companies distribute free cigarettes to minors: to get children addicted. They will not give discounts to these students once they've grown up and graduated."

Surely this applies only if you consider chromebooks as free and this not true atleast by RMS standards.

Re:The Rook's Guide to C++ on Wednesday November 27, 2013 @08:28AM (#6807892)
My exact feelings, I did c++ in high school with some ancient borland c++ compiler. I always felt I don't know enough of c++ whenever I happen to go through some modern c++ source code. I just realized that is just the STL.

meh,how do you copy a line in sublime then ? You are not even using sublime.Spend couple of hours just learning the basic commands of whatever editor you prefer using.If your editor is any good you will have more to learn after the two hours.If you are worried about obscure key combinations learn vim,it's like a language for text processing.You can even activate vintage mode in sublime if you like the look of sublime. just my .02

Re:My Code made it to a Hollywood Movie on Saturday April 06, 2013 @06:41PM (#5505333)
You are right, if there is no reward for authentic looking fake stuff ,why bother.. I should stop trying to make sense out of television hackers code.
Re:My Code made it to a Hollywood Movie on Saturday April 06, 2013 @11:44AM (#5503896)
I used to pause Person of Interest http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1839578/ to look at the code which made no sense at all and stopped following the stupid series.I am sure I am not the only one .It's not a bad thing to pay attention to detail.
